There’s one rule on Space Time: It’s never Aliens. But every rule has an exception and this rule is no exception because: It’s never aliens, until it is. So is it aliens yet? And on today’s Space Time we’re going to examine all the best case scenarios for life beyond Earth.

Thanks for the direct to Anton, he is an absolutely amazing presenter and, on top of it, he is a wonderful person.
5:07 Even if the red lines on Europa are rust, I thought that was still a pretty good indicator of sub-surface life considering it indicates the presence of O2 in the water which is typically created by cyanobacteria (at least on earth).
Mars is also red due to iron oxide. It may indicate that all the free oxygen once present in Europa is already bound and used up, and natural processes are somehow pushing the ancient iron oxide onto the surface.
"at least on earth" is the problem, though. We've got a pretty specific and therefore limited sandbox on our planet - there could be millions of life-free ways to induce O2 in water, we just haven't observed them, because those circumstances can't occur in our specific sandbox.

When the Impossible has been eliminated, and you have nothing left; There is no choice, but to rethink what is in fact possible.
@The Guy You Knew As Mark Omega well that’s kinda boring
@The Guy You Knew As Mark Omega If they only possible answer is the impossible, we should relook at why we threw out the possible. Our understanding of the universe isn't the ultimate truth, and we shouldn't always be insisting our assumptions are correct.
As much as i love imagining alien life, i favor truth more. whats true outweighs my wishes.
I remember the Proxima Centauri results. One really compelling problem with it is that the frequency of the signal is an extremely unlikely round number when measured in inverse seconds. The unit of one second is clearly derived from human culture. I will point out that it is close to the time between heartbeats for a healthy adult who got a lot of exercise, like most adults did a few hundred years ago. Wikipedia says that the historical definition comes from the angular velocity of the Earth.
A more advanced civilization would almost certainly base its unit of time on something more universal. According to Wikipedia, "since 1967, the second has been defined as exactly "the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom" (at a temperature of 0 K)".
“Sherlock Holmes observed that once you have eliminated the impossible then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the answer. I, however, do not like to eliminate the impossible.” - Dirk Gently

F Anton's positivity when he can't say a sentence without a major bs!
The logical part of me understands these new discoveries are because of advancements in technology.
But seeing all of them debunked at once makes the imaginative part of me go "Yeah...right... sure totally not aliens, just a weather balloon right?".
One reason I think people get caught up in the dichotomy of "Aliens or Not Aliens?" is because they make the assumption that they know what life is defined as in the first place. When we look for alien life, we look for signals that resemble something we're expecting. The universe is unfathomably huge, so why are we limiting our look to our tiny, loose definition of life as we know it on our one planet? How do we know that we'd even recognize alien life if we encountered it? But yes, for now, using some version of Occam's Razor is our best path forward.

@@ethanwilliamson782 there are some credible releases that have radar, sonar, infrared, and people observing them. Also the way they move is beyond our understanding of physics. Now does that mean they are aliens, no. Realistically we should hope they are 1 of 3 things. First is an unexplained physical phenomena. Second is aliens. Third is they are us from the future. I seriously doubt Oumuamua has anything to do with aliens, but the outgassing theory for its unexpected, last-minute acceleration raises a question: It was observed, or at least believed, to be tumbling, so there’s almost no chance that it could outgas to produce a linear acceleration. Its tumbling would almost certainly produce a rotating thrust vector.
Also, its rotation would cause the Sun to heat the object pretty evenly, meaning that it would have to have received a huge total heat load to cause any part of it to outgas with any substantial force. Did it even get close enough to the Sun to impart that big a heat load?
That sounds exactly like something an alien would say.... 🤔

In 1970, when I was 19, I and my girlfriend pulled up in her dad's driveway in the early evening. It had been a sunny day, and the light had begun to fade slightly. The car was parked perpendicular to the house, and our vision wasn't blocked by other houses. As we sat in the car, about to get out, a speeding craft caught my eye through the windshield to my far right. I sprang out of the car and got a good look at it, as it sped across my field of vision. I watched as it disappeared on the horizon in a couple of seconds. The craft was saucer-shaped top and bottom, dark in color, and seemed to be rotating slowly. It was perhaps 500 feet in the air, and a half-mile distant from me. I guess, in my crude way, that it was making five or six thousand miles per hour. It was totally silent.
Rare logic flaw for this otherwise rock solid channel: No comet can be accelerated out of the solar system by its tail acting as a jet because the tail always points away from the sun. If anything a jet produced by solar wind plus the sun's gravity would slow it down. Am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure it comes out on July 4. That way, Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith can save us.
i love how PBS spacetime uses Jardim Botânico from Curitiba footage on their videos. This is the second one where i spot some pictures of it. And it happens i live nearby it. Which is awesome

Whoaaaa
That signal from Proxima centauri is probably a warning that we have a millenia to leave Earth before it is demolished in order to create the hyperspace space route
actually there’s still a lot of interest in the venues life issue. I just listened to an Event Horizon podcast done in December of 2021 where there’s still quite a lot of convenient data for things that had been conveniently set aside from earlier missions that didn’t make sense. Like apparently three missions found oxygen in the atmosphere but was unable to be explained. And a few other things that make sense if it turns out to be true. Doesn’t mean it is but it’s not nearly as dead an issue as it seems space time feels about it.
