Two Fishing Philosophies That Might Confuse You

  • Another great day at the Pier. There are two philosophies when it comes to fishing off a pier or bridge near pylons, one - keep the drag tight, or two - keep the drag loose. Nothing is ever perfect and either why you might end up rigging your line again. It is a matter of preference which one you choose but if you are going to keep it tight then use a bungie to anchor it and use a heavier lead. Using bungie works but can be a pain initially when having a fish on and trying to get the pole out of the bungie. I switched to 65lb braid with a 40lb fluoro lead and I have not had an issue with the line breaking. If I cast out, I will loosen the drag, but if I drop it around the pylons, I will have little to no drag and anchor my pole on something. If any of you have any other suggestions please let us know. Subscribe, it helps us provide you with great videos but also we share our experience with all of you.
Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Great video. Nice safe of your rod. Great size red fish. If you catch it on Sept. 1 it would have being legal.

That is what I thought but It seems in that area, including Fort Myers/Lee County you still cannot keep. There was a bunch of Reds on the Atlantic side yesterday but they were chasing all the schools of mullet. 🙂

Besides getting through the mosquito-infested mangrove trees, it is a great spot. 😁. We have had pretty good luck in this area with Reds, Snook, and Snapper.

Inshore lizard fish was your mystery fish. And it's a toad fish you and your wife caught. Redfish are now legal as of September 1st. Most areas had the limit reduced, but Charlotte Harbor down to Vanderbilt Beach Rd now has a limit of 1 per day, which is an increase from catch and release (zero). Take note of the slot size. Still no Snook in the same area though. Laws are changing constantly. As for drag, if you tighten it down because sometimes you have to pull them out of structure, you need to hold the rod. I like to do bait and wait with many rods as well, but some places are better suited than others. Sometimes less is more. Cheers!

That is great there letting you keep one Red at least. I am trying to figure out the best way when tightening the drag. I agree I probably should just hold the rod but I use two poles and it is not always easy. 🙂I have started using a Bungi to make sure the rod does not go in but then it is a pain to take it out when I do have something on the line. Have a great day and thank you for all the feedback.

Hi Alex, I am not sure if you are in the Fort Myers area or the vicinity of where Hurricane Ian was the worst but if you were I hope you are safe and all is ok.

@@BeyondFishingFamily Thanks guys, means a lot. Pretty much all my favorite places in the area have been destroyed, and it makes me so sad I am sick to my stomach. I am well, and my family is well, but this is so devastating I am speechless. This will take years to recover from. 😞

@@Dec1duousTree It is devastating. I look at some of the photos of places we used to visit all the time and they are destroyed. It is sad these things are destroyed but I am glad you and your family are safe.

Awesome video but I noticed at 11:09 that you put on an undersized lane snapper for bait. To my understanding, you cannot use undersized ‘reef fish’ for bait to catch other fish. That’s the same as say, using that live redfish to catch a shark. Just don’t want you to get in trouble! Nice catches!

Hi Lauro, thank you for watching the video. I believe it was a Grunt but I am not prefect and you could be right. I do not use fish I should not use for bait but it is possible I made a mistake. In this area we normally pull Gray Snapper. I usually throw the sabiki out a little and catch Grunts and Pins, but it is possible I was in a hurry and did not look closer at it. Thank you for pointing it out!
