Enjoy it! 6'4", bought mine a few months before the discontinued it. I have been babying that thing because I love it so much I was hating the idea of it wearing out and having to find some alternate.... If they weren't so expensive, I'd probably buy a 2020 and keep the 2017 model as a backup. Here's hoping they keep it in their lineup for a long time to come.

I perfectly understand the desire to find that perfect tent, the holy grail of hikers and campers the world over. But I don't think it really exists except in myth and lore. After all, the perfect tent would actually morph into different tents depending on the weather, the type of adventure, the location, and a zillion other factors.
    Perfect for this year, perhaps.
But I'd bet that within a month of use, you'll be thinking of some little changes you would like to see done to it.
    Still, a wholly worthy quest!

Bring back the Dana Designs Wet Rib. Originally made in Left and Right sides, sizes Small and Large. The Wet Rib hangs from any shoulder harness straps and attaches across your ribs with a quick release buckle. There is a cinch pocket for a water bottle with an opening diameter large enough to handle a Nalgene quart/liter bottle. Behind the water bottle cinch pocket there is a large (or small, hence the sizes L and S) zipper pouch that will easily hold compass, snacks, iPhone, gps unit, map, whistle, etc (I know because I've used the heck out of mine and carried all that stuff in there all at once). GREAT product to keep stuff we use on a regular basis right at hand. Best part is that it keeps your water bottle right there at hand, no searching around the sides of your pack, or having to take your pack off to get to snacks. Great product. I asked zpacks if they would consider remanufacturing this and they said no. Probably because not enough people asked for it. See if you can find one, I mainly use the left side one in size large. Thanks for all the great vids and thanks for finding this great tent!

Thanks for this lucrative video, Darwin. !!!!! A hiking buddy and I started watching this and AS SOON as you said "dcf" and "long enuff" I said to Rick that your perfect tent is my Altaplex that I bought a few years ago from Zpacks along, with my sleeping bag, because I had the exact same problem that you have...a soaking wet footbox from the Solplex that I bought previously because once you toss in the 3-inch pad the footbox is rubbing the tent. Rick said "no" and named something else and I said that the ONLY tent that was ever made in dcf and was "long"---that I was aware of---and I know them all----was the Altaplex, which I knew that Zpacks FINALLY brought back. Rick bets on any and everything and thanks to this video I am now 50.00 richer for my upcoming 3rd thruhike of the AT in less than a month. You will LOVE this tent!!!!!!! I was bummed when they discontinued it because the loss of the Altaplex created a void in dcf tents for taller hikers and dcf doesnt have the longest life-span of materials even with TLC. I am going to order another one next week so that I will have a "spare"...lol...just in case Joe decides to discontinue it again in the future.
Good luck on the AT....a shame you wont be doing the whole thing...but enjoy the other hikes you have planned for 2020!!

I'm using a camo duplex right now. But I might go get an altaplex. Well done Mr. D ! (and Zpacks)
A useful trick, or hack, for the damp foot box (still useful also with the altaplex, but not quite as necessary) is to attach a couple of clips, left and right to the bottom of the side seams of your breathable rain jacket eg Visp (or possibly vertice). The other half of the clips about one jacket length up from the bottom of your quilt. Those small flat clips used on the quilt straps are ideal for this. Zip up jacket and pull it over the foot box. Clip on. Makes a breathable water proof foot bag. . If you have each clip, left and right, opposite to the other (one male, one female) that also comes in handy when you are walking along, warm weather, with the jacket unzipped, between showers. You can clip the bottom of the side seams together behind you and pull the front zip back out of the way. I used some of zpacks repair tape to stick them on. Better to sew of course. You need the clips otherwise you'll just pull the bottom of the quilt out of the jacket ever time you turn over.

Thanks for another great video, Darwin! Yep, Zpacks has the new Altaplex up on their site for order now (w/ 1-2 weeks shipping time). I'm not as tall as you, so I haven't suffered from the same issues you had, but I'm really happy that you championed for the re-release of this tent. The Zpacks Duplex works great for me, but I might buy this tent. Reasons being: lighter weight, simpler set-up, although a 1-tall person tent, this will work great for someone not as tall that wants a solo tent that has more room inside for gear storage, with better headroom for comfortability. So, not only does this tent serve taller hikers, it also has great benefits for average height hikers looking for a lighter solo option w/ more room and space. Thank you, Darwin!

What should be brought back on the market is our tent the Sierra Designs Flash 3. It is not a super light tent but it is light for made of polyester and what is great about it is 1) one piece set up and 2) the best: no front tent but an awning. Having to crawl through a wet from condensation front tent is just plain awfull. Instead this tent features seperate places tot put your gear and you can get in and out this tent very easy. The awnings work great. Just sit in your tentdoor while cooking in the rain, the tent stays dry. Our club of backpackers here in the Netherlands were very interested in the design. Before they could buy one, it was out of production. We think this was because this tent was clearly misunderstood. Even at the outdoor shop they sold it as a tent for sunny weather, because of the 'lack' of a front tent. But we camp in it year round. We also have the Triplex, but the Flash 3 stays our favorite.

I wish someone brought back berry or wildberry i think it was Powerbars. I used to buy them a lot in the 90's training for triathlons. That was my favorite flavor. Peanut butter or chocolate is a toss up. And you can still buy those. I bought a whole box of berry one time. To save money. Left them in the plastic bag on my bed. Left for a few hours only to come home and find my yellow lab tore open the box ate all but 2 bars. Left wrappers all over the room. Since the mid ninetie, they stopped making that flavor. I also miss Turkey Hill Sports drink they used to carry in a waxed carton. Its a local company in Pa that makes great iced tea. That also was in the late 80's early 90's. I have already emailed them about 5 years ago on that. Nothing. They had an orange and also a lemon lime flavor.

For those who are not tall... I'm a small female almost 5'6". I just bought the 2020 altaplex and it is fantastic. I like doing certain stretches with my feet up and arms out. Also the door is so easy to get in and out of. I hardly need to stoop. Also I think less condensation. So I feel it's a great choice if smaller too. With the steep walls I know my quilt is not going to hit the sides. I had the OG hexamid and it was too small even for me as far as getting drenched. So with the high walls of the bathtub floor I appreciate the privacy and not as breezy as the old hex with net floor. (the net floor held up well tho), Anyway am thrilled with the new altaplex!

I still have my first true backpacking tent bought in 2005. At the time it was one of the lightest tents on the market and won an award from Backpacker Magazine. Fast forward to today, 4.5 lbs is no longer considered light weight. So my Sierra Design Clip Flashlight stays at home. It is a two person, front entry, non free standing tunnel type tent. It was warm in cold weather and withstood high winds that took out every other tent in camp. It's been car camping, kayak camping, and of course backpacking for 13 years before I had to replace the seam seal and treat with waterproofing. I'm getting too old to carry it down the trail, and my car camping is now with an RV, but will certainly take it down river. When I went to replace it for my upcoming CT hike (hope I see you there) I was hoping Sierra Design made it in newer lighter weight material. I was surprised to see it had gone through several design changes throughout the years and was now a completely different tent. I've thought about replacing the bathtub with dynema and ditching the ground cloth, but that would only save me a pound. If I rebuilt the rain fly with dcf, it would cost more than most dcf tents. So, I'm still trying put some light weight options. Didn't like the Fly Creek HV UL 1. Way too cramped and drafty. The REI Quarter Dome was way heavier than I anticipated. Was not that empressed with my recent purchase of the Tiger Wall UL 2, which may go back to REI. Truly considering a tarp tent, but worry about the bugs on CT in July. So that leaves single wall. Looking at the GG the two. Running out of time.

I do a lot of research on the camping gear and I buy what I want and mostly not based on a cheap price. For instance, my last hammock is well over $500, tarp, $300, under quilt $319. I sleep great and I don't have to worry about equipment failure. Good video.

With a bathtub floor attached to the "fly" and mosquito netting attached to the peak you can fold the entire "tent" for storage. If you add a loop of cordage to the peak of the "tent" you can then hang it from above by about eight different methods providing greater set-up flexibility.

not a product idea, but maybe a cool suggestion .
I have been strapping my duplex to the bottom of my pack by lashing shock cord to the grommets placed at the bottom of my stretch mesh pocket & running it towards the hipbelt strap that I have removed. adds more streamlined approach to getting your tent out in rain, carrying more food in a 40l pack, and putting a wet tent away.
