- This Taylor showdown spotlights three beautifully crafted Grand Auditorium models from our Builder’s Edition collection: the Builder’s Edition 324ce, featuring Urban Ash back and sides and a mahogany top; the Builder’s Edition 614ce, which sports figured maple back and sides and a torrefied spruce top; and the Builder’s Edition K24ce, made with figured Hawaiian koa back, sides and top. Taylor’s Aaron Dablow and Daniel Fraire do the honors, with Aaron detailing some of the ergonomic playing features that elevate the Builder’s Edition playing experience, including a beveled armrest, contoured cutaway and chamfered body edges. Daniel’s strumming and fingerpicking play-through demos let you hear and compare the tonal personalities of each. Which one is your favorite?

I tried all 3.. nearly walked out with the koa. Think I just loved the inlays on it.. beautiful guitar. Ended up with the 324 which just felt better and sounded deeper and not as tinny or bright. Absolutely in love with it. Made the right choice.
They all sound great of course. I have a K24ce non-builder’s edition and after 8 years it is so incredible when compared to when I first got it. Always sounded great but now much more full bodied.
The K24ce is just on another planet and that's after coming from a 324ce...it gives me what I love in the 324ce (warmth) but gives more balance and brightness. I had to take it home! Builders Editions are insane no matter what series, almost went for the 324ce BE but it didn't provide a pronounced step up sound wise to me from my 324ce (non-BE) but the K24ce did from quality, feel (BE), and sound (Koa).
I've had the pleasure of playing all three, and they're excellent. I favored the K24
I owned a 324ce and it played very well . my choice would be the K24ce. Great sound with a little more bass drive .
On the strumming, I felt the depth of the K24ce. Fingerpicked, they were all very nice with an edge to the 614ce and the 324ce. Honestly, I'd be happy with any of these three. It would be my 5th Taylor.
All sounded great but I think I liked the 324 tone the best. I would gladly enjoy any of them though.
I just picked up a 614ce BE, I have always like the sound of the maple back and sides, and the bevel on the arm so comfortable. Amazing guitars, love all of my Taylor’s
I wanted a Builder's Edition, and tried both the 614CE and 324CE. Walked out with the 324. The 614 was nice, but just too bright. 324 was a bit darker, haunting, and very powerful. It was also $1k cheaper, but I was prepared to pay for whichever i liked best. 324 hands down.
I notably did not play the K24ce but after having played the 324ce next to other more highly priced model from Taylor, I made the same decision as Daniel here. I happy but not surprised to see the conclusion of Daniel on this video - put up on the Taylor youtube channel no less!
I own a 324ce Builders edition after sampling several Taylor in my local guitar shop. My reason for buying was the comfort, the awesome sound which I felt was the best from the 6 guitars I tried - I also likes it simple but clean look. Fantastic guitar!!
I agree with Daniel. I liked the 324 sound overall best.
All models have their personality resonance quality of woodwork, I own the 614ce nl erable that happiness, thank you for sharing ..
Another great comparison. I'd love to own any of these, if you're giving them away. But since we live in the real world, the only two I'd consider buying would be the 324ce or the 614ce. The 324ce sounds a lot like my 322e, though. With maple back and sides, the 614 would fill a unique role in my collection.
Own both the 324ce BE and K24ce BE. Looks like I might make K24ce my main one after playing both for the past few months. More balanced and full than the 324ce for my style of harmonic fingerstyle picking.
324ce spoke to me the most but that K24ce is a dang beauty!!
I'm still rocking my 6 year old 214ce-K-DLX. Definitely wanna upgrade soon to one of these builders editions with the V bracing.
Update: I just bought the 324ce Builders Edition
Can't really go wrong depending on what you're looking for. The 324CE , overall, stood out to me, but the 624 had some sparking trebles. The KOA needs some break in years
The midrange focus of the k24 helps make the guitar cut through in a band situation playing with drums and bass. It’s a great guitar, and the prettiest of the bunch, but it doesn’t shine as much solo. The 324ce sounded a little more balanced, but still with a lot of the k24’s warmth. If I were buying a new acoustic guitar, I’d be looking seriously at the 324ce.
In my first comparison playing of Taylor guitars, I tried a 200-series, a 300-series (314?), a 614, and a 900-series. I eventually purchased a 324ce BE (bravely, without playing it) because of the the body size and style, the uniqueness of the wood, and the arm rest. No complaints other than my lack of talent; it’s a pleasure having a guitar that makes me sound good!
Second that😁
The koa wow😍
Of the three I liked the 324 best in this comparison. However, one of the things that I don't like in *most* Taylors is their lack of articulation. You do get a bit more of that in the 400 series, but lack the fullness of the 6, 8 and 9 series. The Taylor sound has changed the industry standard which is why Martin "reimagined" their lineup to be a bit less vintage Martin-like and a bit more Taylor-like. The most articulate Taylor model today (IMO) is the 914 or generally the 900 series. However a typical Taylor can be made more articulate with string gauge (or brand) bone saddle and finding the right bridge pins to make it both more resonant and articulate. JMO
I loved both the 324ce and the K24. I is a toss up for me but my 1st impression was the 324ce BE. I have a 324ce with mahogany top and blackwood back and sides. I am drawn to warmer sounds.
What do you think is best? Ash, sapele, or tas blackwood for back and sides. Also, do you like x brace of v-class?
I like the voice of the 614ce Builders Edition; now if they made it a 612e or 612e 12 fret, same tone woods.
Koa for me … love Koa
I like the Taylor the best. 😁
Can you compare the 814 ce builders edition with the 324 ce builders edition please? Iam in between of them
K24ce... my forbidden dream!
Biased. I own a 614ce BE and it stuns me daily. Each of these guitars has a distinct and wonderful voice. Taylor has really made a wonderful platform for tonewoods and I’m a huge fan of all Builder’s Edition models, 100% custom quality without having to go that particular route.
I’ve the K14ce Builders Edition from 2021. Sounded very very bright at first but a switch of strings to Ernie Ball Earthwarm brought some of the brightness down a bit to make it warmer and more woody. Starting to develop a nice tone to it. Not quite up to my martins but it’s getting there
The Koa is rich and allows vocals to soar over the unofficial limiter delivery of the build..
The K24ce is already my favourite when it comes to the Builder’s Edition lol
Sometimes I wish there was a gloss option for the Builder’s Edition 😜
I agree, I think gloss makes Koa grain pop way more, especially since they make BE stain so dark, it needs all the gloss it can get to bring the grain beauty out. On some of those and some Koa+ GS minis you can barely tell what wood the top is made of because it’s sooo dark and the satin/mat finish makes it look even duller. That’s just my taste.
Too me the 314 has too much bass. 614 has too much trebles. K24 has the right balance for me. Would get the K24 if I am to buy one.
I would love to own a Taylor Builders Edition, but Taylor hates left handed people. I say that as a light hearted joke. I absolutely love Taylor. I’m just sad we don’t get a chance to own a Builders Edition. I’m right handed, but I learned to play left handed due to a surgery on my left hand. I can’t use my left ring finger well enough to fret with. I had given up ever learning guitar, but at the age of 46 I decided to give it a go left handed. As a tradesman I really respect the craft and workmanship on the Builders Editions. I would love to at least get a chance to own one even if I can’t do the guitar justice. I feel unloved Taylor. What gives? Why the disdain for us lefties? I do own a left handed Koa, but it’s no Builders Edition
Hey guys look you all are awesome but I am very concerned. I spent 2300 on a brand new Taylor 324ce. I felt like it sounded basically the same as the builders edition so I didn’t spend the extra 500. Are you saying that the regular 324ce is just not as good or what is your opinion because I really couldn’t afford to drop that money and it took me months to finally decide on one. But I see you all promote the builders editions constantly but never talk about the regular line. So I just am curious why and if I should be satisfied with my 324ce not a builders. Thanks!
-Ryan
Ryan, the 324ce is a wonderful guitar, don't worry at all. If it felt good in your hands and ears, you made the best decision.
Builder's Edition is like the "Director's Cut" with some differences like Gotoh tuners, an armrest, a compound cutaway. It's nota better or worse thing, they're just different features. Your guitar is awesome, if you love it then enjoy it.
@@gabrielobrien21 thanks brother
@@R.L.Humpert anytime. Congrats on the new guitar! Love that model.
The 324 suits my ear best. I thought the 614 lost some low end. Koa is in a class by itself in my opinion . I find people either love it or not. I’m in the “not” group. But koa is visually stunning and I love the construction features
I know everyone does it, but please stop cut away close ups of the guy talking looking some where else. It interrupts one to one communication! Script a camera turn where he talks to the close up camera. Who is he talking to otherwise. Not me.
