ou, why did I only now find this? This just made my day, seeing your first reaction to babel!
the staccato offset is to keep all the syllables consistent, because there is for example a 'su' somewhere in the repititions, which needs extra offset to sound realistic, so that it works in professional studio use. For live it's not so convenient, I agree.
