I love how you went over what should be kept but I'm 60 yrs old so I grew up when you were taught to hold onto all paper. There was no internet or electronic filing. I was completely overwhelmed by the amount of paper I had accumulated. I had a shed full of boxes full of paper, a large deep 4 drawer file cabinet full and stacks of paper everywhere in my office. I used many of the tips you talked about to set up a system to keep on top of current incoming paper. However to get through all of the backlog I used a "FlyLady" method of going through an inch a day or 15 minutes a day. Sometimes a little more if it was really old paper that was easy to make a decision about. I had a box to put papers to recycle, another box for papers to shred, and my in-box for papers that needed filing. Weekly I went through my in-box and filed etc any paper put in there. I would empty the recycle box every few days, and when the shredding box was full I put it in a staging area of the garage to hold for a massive shred. Obviously I had a lot of paper that would need shredding, old bills, pay stubs, tax papers, old work papers, so I made the decision to accumulate and take a bulk load of paper to a local shredding company that I could pay bulk prices but who let me watch the destruction of my documents. It took me almost 6 months to get through everything but I wanted to offer encouragement for others. Definitely take pictures before you start because when you feel like you're not making progress you can see how far you've come. I found committing to do it in small amounts didn't overwhelm me and disrupt everyday life and I made progress every day. I hope this encourages others drowning in paper. I'm down now to just my one four drawer file cabinet. One day I aspire to have one little box like Kay. You can do it too!

Thank you, Regina. I’m almost the same age as you and your story gives me hope. Committing to doing a manageable amount each day is a practise that works best for me, too. Your idea to take photos to keep motivated is the step that I was missing.
PS My mom followed the Fly Lady.

I’m currently working on decluttering my paper goods/stuff. What I keep in mind is when my dad passed, all I had to sort through so a new person could move into his apt. Old magazines, papers, etc. I don’t want my daughter to have that burden when my husband and I pass away.

Re: greetings cards, I usually cut the fronts/picture part off with pinking shears and save those in the under bed storage bag I keep wrapping paper etc in - this way I don't have to buy a tags every Christmas/occasion and it works out really well especially as I don't then accumulate more paper. My mum's always done this which is probably why I picked up the habit ha! Great video as always :)

I have just gone through a box full of my kids' old homework. My girls saw this and were asking me why the heck I have all this and they did not care for any of it. I kept some cute drawings, put them in a scrapbook, and got rid of the rest. I see it like this... I don't care to see any of my past school work. I think you should keep what is sentimental and then get rid of the other paper. You can also see it as, you put this stuff in a box that sits in the back of your closet... that you never go through unless you were cleaning. So I would think of that while I'm cleaning. If I want to keep it, then maybe display it or put it somewhere like in a keepsake box. If I forget that I even have the papers or don't care that it has been months or years that I've seen it, then throw it out. I try to think of how I have kept something, like in a box in the closet for months collecting dust, to decide if I want to keep and display (or utilize it in some way), or just get rid of it.

For anyone who lives in the UK I sign up the the mail preference service every time I move house. I notify them I’m no longer at my old address, then as I get mail in the new house, I notify them that old tenants have left our current home. It significantly reduces junk mail. I also unsubscribe from mailing lists. I try to save the 🌳’s. All my bills are electronic if possible, saves me shredding or scanning in, straight to digital filling if it’s needed!

I hate paper clutter (especially mail) but I deal with it before I leave the mailroom! Junk gets tossed, bills get put on my desk, and everything else is checked before deciding what to do.
I strongly advice people to get bills sent via mail as opposed to online bc that way you will catch any mistakes, increases, decreases, etc. For me, it gives me a better sense about whether or not I’m spending more electricity this month compared to the previous month, etc. Everything else I get sent electronically such as statements (bank, HSA, PayPal, etc)

We get our mail from a mailbox at the road at the fence- best thing we did was put our trash can/storage hidden behind that fence- junk mail never gets to our home- we only keep- passports, birth/death certificate, car titles, tax docs, everything else gets shredded and thrown out- only some get scanned. Its not hard- we do bills weekly. Mail daily. All bills on line. Pretty good for senior citizens! No sentimental papers need to get saved-scan it. Think when I die will my kids want this? Save home made Christmas ornaments- not papers.

So years ago I bought a shredder that was supposed to be “industrial grade” it was $$$! It lasted I believe 14-15 months. Bought it because the cheaper ones wouldn’t last. My husband bought one second hand at goodwill, it’s lasted over 3 years, he also bought a “ mini shredder” also second hand for small labels and the like, it sits on a desk. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyways I have been keeping too much and plan on purging most of what’s filed. Thanks for posting recommendations on virtual sources to do that, I didn’t know where to start.

Hi there, thought id share a funny story. Talking about paper clutter, over a month ago I was moving house due to separation. I had a box for me and another for my ex. It was a miserable experience as my ex shoved all the paper in a wardrobe. It was important stuff from birth certificates/passports to bills to junk mail. I listened to the beastie boys on loop lol. to get me sorting.
anyway I found all this correspondence from my ex's mother and father. It was interesting to read but I really don't need pad paper from 1955 (it was dated on the top) or letters from 1956 - 1983 or my ex brother' in law's school report from 1981. I put all that in his boxes.

Would you please go over your 3 favorite apps? What you love about the different ones? I can’t tell the difference and they all have some kind of cost. *¡Just open the mail!*
That's so been me!! sigh ...
I've been going through those bags and bins, and have one for my son- in law to shred ...
He commented that he'll chuck my junk mail as it comes in when I'm in my tiny house in their back yard! (I envision setting my recycling bin next to the mail slot!)
The book Birth and Relationship gave me clues to my procrastination - arriving several weeks early by planned Cesarean, I have the 'induced' pattern of needing to be induced rather than told ... I'll dig my heels 👠 in and rebel when told I 'should've do something - my poor mom!
I'd just be ready to dig out my room, and she'd TELL me i needed to! of course then I'd rebel! ....
and my cleaning style included dragging it all out into our little central hall .... and then trying to get done before my dad got home ...
