  • Hello again everyone,
This is just a follow up to the previous video showing the results of my first attempt at using the "All Purpose Foam Coat" from the Hot Wire Foam Factory.
I am super impressed with this coating and it is so much easier than plaster. It is so much stronger. I already have some issues with the plaster cloth coated bank turn scenery where the plaster cloth has weakened and that will no longer be an issue with this foam coating. The cleanup using the foam coat is a breeze. Summary: Faster, simpler, and much stronger.
The next few videos will be on foam coating the remaining pieces and putting the ground cover on i.e. turf, grass, bushes, etc...
I can't believe this is actually getting finished. It has taken a lot of time but being patient, doing the job in manageable chunks, and taking my time is paying off.
Once the scenery is complete, we will get back to racing, adding the remaining lights, catch fence, guard rails, setting up the race management system, and finally building the analog/digital switch to run all the classic analog cars with analog controllers.
    From the previous video:
    The steps that I use:
1.) Have an idea of what you want on paper i.e. sketch
    2.) Make cardboard templates
3.) Cut the foam using a foam cutting jigsaw blade and sabre saw:
    • Festool 493656 S 155/W Foam-cutting Jigsaw Blade, 6 Inch, 3-pack
    • amazon.com/gp/...
    • Makita XVJ03Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Jig Saw
    • amazon.com/gp/...
    • NOTE: This is for the tool only and does not include the battery or charger.
4.) Glue pieces together to build up the height/elevation you need using StyroGoo and some weights to keep it in place while it dries COMPLETELY
    • StyroGoo:
    • hotwirefoamfac...
5.) Roughly form/sculpt the foam sections until they fit correctly and have the basic shape you are looking for.
    • Here’s the kit I use (primarily the sculpting tool with the wire tensioner):
    • hotwirefoamfac...
6.) Lightly sand the formed/sculpted foam sections taking into account how thick of a foam coating you are going to apply. I used 80 grit sand paper.
    7.) Apply the foam coating
    • Don’t coat the bottom face
    • All Purpose Foam Coat:
    • hotwirefoamfac...
    • You can tint the foam coat with a pigment in the earth tone color for your terrain scheme. This will save you from having to paint the whole thing before putting down the ground cover.
    • NOTE: Be very careful not to use too much. It only takes a very small amount to radically change the color. I found that the concrete pigment was too strong and will be using my assortment of Woodland Scenics:
    • woodlandscenic...
    • For my layout, I use the “Earth Undercoat” pigment.
    • You can also add a little fine sand or other grit into the foam coat to give it more texture.
    • Before the foam coat cures/dries completely, you can shape/sculpt in details.
    • Allow it to dry completely
    8.) Apply the ground cover
    • Here’s a great video that shows how easy it is to get really great looking terrain:
    • • Easily Model Realistic...
Let me know if you have any comments or questions below.
    Thanks for watching.
    Be safe and have fun!
    Cheers,
    Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

Wow, that looks pretty cool. I heard you reading the instructions which said this could be sprayed from a gun, but I don't see how as thick as it was. Thanks again for sharing. Keep up the awesome work. I just took delivery of my second Carrera Digital track today in a month. GT Face Off. I'm hooked.
