- When it comes to Mermista, I don’t know what’s stronger - her love/hate relationship with sea shantys, her sarcasm, or her hydrokinetic abilities, but I do know that she is one of the coolest princesses in all of Etheria. Mermista is inarguably one of the strongest princesses of the bunch, stepping up to the plate as Sea-Ra when the Best Friend Squad was off-world battling the Horde, and let’s be real, her sense of humor kills. I’m Whitney Van Laningham, and today we’re diving into the deep of Mermista’s history and symbolism.

Mermista is pretty cool, i love her deadpan attitude. Though you did make a slight error; when she swam through the sewer system in the Fright Zone, she didn't breathe under the water, she says in a later episode "I didn't almost-drown in these sewers for nothing!", which implies that she held her breath, like a fish closing it's gills. Considering what she was swimming through, i don't blame her.

I think the obviously not clean water cause her to struggle to breath under water. She also wouldn't want to breath in dirty ass water
I imagine her trying to breath sewer water would be like someone trying to breath normally at the top of a mountain where the oxygen levels are lower. Idk if sewer water has less oxygen than normal water or not tho so not 100% sure if that's a good analogy.

I didn't like what they did with Seahawk. He was a cool guy in the old show and Adora's love interest, Pagemaster.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that unlike the skinny original version the new mermista actually looks athletic like an experienced swimmer would.

Wow. I know it’s common for voice actors to do multiple characters. But Melanie had her work cut out for her. She does a great job
Melendy Britt, and also Linda Gary, who was perhaps the MOST utilized voice actress between the original filmation She-ra AND He-man series. She voiced: Shadow Weaver, Scorpia, Madame Razz, Entrapta, Evil Lynn, Teela, The Sorceress, and Queen Marlena, as well as the voices of many young children on both series

Part of me wonders if “retired,” is a low key way of saying dead.
Aside from Glimmer, we never do see the parents of all the other princesses.
My headcanon is that her dad's retirement was due to poor health, and he probably died offscreen at some point.

@@KeeKage37 Probably. We know for certain that Frosta's parents are dead - she took over at age 8! Perfuma's parents are probably also dead. I'm not sure Entrapta ever had human parents.

@@Meshakhad I think Entrapta’s parents probably passed when she was very young, to the point that she might as well not have had any. Thus, she built her own bot family.

How can she be Indian on another planet with no India? It would be like saying Adora is American. I get fantasy characters and places draw inspiration from real,groups but they aren't those groups.

@@101Mant she would be Indian coded. Meaning that she and the rest of her kingdom are inspired by Indian culture. Coded is a term used for describing things is fictional worlds that are inspired by ours, but obviously are not the same. I hope this makes sense :)
@@nikkohimari it's nebulous because her voice actor, Vella Lovell, looks South Asian but is actually biracial African-American. I don't think that negates her coding but I think it does muddy the waters.

What symbolism? He's just the comedy relief who constantly gets the short end of the stick. Plus, he doesn't even have a 1985 counterpart to fall back on like the majority of the characters do.

This is going to be a controversial question, but do you think season 5 turned Mermista into a Failure Hero? She was given the job as being the team leader while Adora is in Space, but gets chipped and turned evil, is handled like any other bad guy in the final battle, is knocked out and spends the rest of the fight unconscious in Sea-Hawk's arms, contributing nothing to Horde Prime's defeat. Heck, the only thing she did in the final battle was help Horde Prime in almost make the destruction of the universe a sure thing. This hurts me since Mermista is one of my fav's and its not fair everyone else got to fight back and she didn't.

I recently got into this show through a friend of mine, and Mermista’s snarky attitude and badassery immediately cemented her as one of my favorite characters!

@@alliza665 Technically, the show is for everyone & because it's a reboot of an '80s property, it should also resonate with fans of the OG _She-Ra_ if they can put aside their affinity for the buxom original and the franchise originally being created so girls could have a _He-Man_ counterpart (which is ironic, since Adora literally is the twin sister of He-Man canonically anyway, but he doesn't show up in the reboot, because the show runners were trying to separate She-Ra from her familial link to her big brother, but that's never, ever going to happen, especially since both of the original Filmation series were recently released together as _He-Man & She-Ra: Masters of the Universe, The Eternia Collection_ and the fact that were it not for He-Man, She-Ra would not even exist) and enjoy the reboot for what it does in reintroducing the classic characters in a fresh, new & interesting way, complete with solid storytelling driven by character-focused plots.

They've said "world end" (suicidal Catra to Adora in season 3 during the whole portal incident), "kill" (Catra to Adora in season 5 after Glimmer & Bow annoy the magicat following her switch to the side of the heroes), "die" (Entrapta when she realizes everyone's faced with imminent peril), "permanently dispose" (Shadow Weaver abusing young Catra), and "sacrifice" (Light Hope & Shadow Weaver towards Adora's role as She-Ra & Queen Angella legitimately staying behind in the broken reality which was collapsing in on itself to restore the world back to normal again after Catra had opened the portal which shattered reality) in this show directly.

Honestly, she's both annoying and hilarious. Not my favorite (mostly because how she treated and views Entrapta), but a pretty fun character.

@@abigailaceves9230 I think it's also important to note that the whole group was under a whole lot of stress. Mermista was actually to the point of tears at one point with how high pressure the mission was. It doesn't make it ok, but it is still important to remember that.

i love the original version/design of Mermista from the classic original Filmation She-ra, but she did not appear in that many episodes of the series, and we didn't get to see her use her powers to their utmost. One thing the new version of Mermista did well with was the presentation and use of her powers. It was unexpected that they made Sea Hawk the love interest of Mermista in the new version, as Sea Hawk was Adora's love interest in the original, while he was infutated in She-ra (Adora kept her identity as She-ra a secret from everyone except Kowl, Madame Razz, and Light Hope in her original series)
Well, they had to put Sea Hawk with someone else, because Catradora was going to be canon in this reboot.

Ever notice that so many of the Female characters in the She-Ra series have the letter "A" at the end of their names, what gives with that?
When you brought up how new school Mermista inherited a crumbling kingdom from her father, I thought you were going to talk more about the symbolism, there. While new She-Ra has plenty of adult fans, as a show for children, there is a clear parallel at play. Today's kids inherit their crumbling world from fathers who presided over collapse after collapse without changing. She is detached and uninterested in coalition building when we meet her, but eventually solidarity wins out, and she groks how her struggles are bound up with Brightmoon, and indeed all of Etheria's struggles. Mermista's arc, then, is one of politicization in the wreckage of yesterday's leaders.
