It’s amazing how some mechanics perform gracefully, smooth and steady.
My mechanic would have a mess everywhere, dirt in tank, torn bent and broken. Nasty paw prints and residue thru out the interior. Atleast an extra hour of work and blame everything accept himself. Amazing, Well done.. I guess once you get jobs nailed down the next steps are style points. Excellent work..

I have a 13 f150 3.5. Thought it was a bad sender so I put a new pump, low fuel message and needle on E remains with a p0463 and p0460. Overlayed the harness circuits from the pump to the cluster(yellow/violet and green/blue) in order to discard any fitted t issues or bad connections. No change. Tried different clusters on it. All 3 clusters do the same thing. At times the needle reads fine at idle or driving but as soon as I turn the truck off it starts acting up again. Checked the old pump fuel lvl sensor resistance and it’s fine, the resistance responds to the floats movement. I don’t know what else to try.

    • @raincitywrench117

You will need to scan IPC for the sub codes to determine which testing is needed.
P0460:11 - Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit: Circuit Short to Ground = circuit with a short to ground for more than 33 seconds
P0460:13 - Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit: Circuit Open = circuit with an open or short to voltage for more than 33 seconds
Get back to me with sub codes and maybe I can help you out.

I’m having this problem with my 02 Cummins. I’ve changed the sending unit, had my pcm/ecm check both fine, put another pcm in from a different truck, done the cluster test and fuel gauge works fine. When the truck is really cold the fuel gauge goes to around half when I start it up then goes right back to empty but if the truck is warm gauge doesn’t move.

Most of the identifix fixes I see for fuel gauge issues relate to the fuel sender. I pulled up a diagram for 02 Ram 2500/3500 diesel. DK BLU/White wire is the fuel level signal = 7volts empty and .5volts full. Access that wire at pcm connector C3 pin26 and ground it when the problem happens. If the fuel gauge goes to full then problem lies downstream with wiring to tank or sending unit connection. If the gauge still reads empty then the problem lies upstream with communication between pcm/ipc or bad instrument panel cluster. You can also ground the same wire at the fuel sender and see what happens while in failure mode.

My son has same issue with his 2013 F150 gas gauge reading empty. He replaced the sending unit with a new one. It didnt fix it. His gauge still reads empty, and his estimated fuel mileage in the cluster has all dashes. Could it be a fuse circuit under the hood, or the instrument cluster be bad?

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  Před 3 lety

With key on, disconnect connector at fuel sender and install 10 ohm resistor between yellow-violet & green-blue and see if fuel gauge reads full. Or, install small jumper wire between two pins to see if gauge rises. If nothing happens then check for any voltage on ye-vt wire. If no voltage then probably has bad cluster.

    Hello.
I got a question maybe someone in the comments can help.
I got an 02 GMC Sierra only thing I did recently was switch the dash cluster back lights for leds after I turned the motor over to make sure they worked. I got stuck with battery, low fuel and security flashing light. As well as passenger seat seatbelt, and abs light. Gear selector and fuel gauge not working.
So I swapped back to incandescents and still have the same issue. Gonna pull fuses and check those. Don’t have an electrical tester. So gonna start there before I move in to sending unit.
    What do y’all think?

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  Před 2 lety

You need a scanner and see if or what codes are stored in the modules. It could be a ground issue, make sure you carefully perform a visual inspection of the pins in the instrument cluster connectors for spread out terminals, burnt connector, etc. When you have the cluster out, leave the connectors installed and wiggle them to see if performance is restored.

If you have one of those tanks that wraps over the driveline then the gas drained over to the opposite side of the float being at an extreme angle. Fill up your tank and I bet the gauge reads correctly again.

    • @raincitywrench117

Strange one Angie. Here is the IPC (instrument panel cluster) strategy on your vehicle:
The IPC uses 4 different operating modes to calculate the fuel level:
      •Anti-slosh (default mode)
      •Key off fueling
      •Key on fueling
      •Recovery
      *Anti-Slosh Mode
The default fuel gauge mode is called the anti-slosh mode. To prevent fuel gauge changes from fuel slosh (gauge instability due to changes in fuel sender readings caused by fuel moving around in the tank), the fuel gauge takes approximately 55 minutes to go from empty (E) to full (F).
      *Key Off Fueling Mode
The key off fueling mode (2 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires the following conditions be met:
•The ignition must be off when refueling the vehicle.
•At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
•The IPC must receive a valid key on fuel sender reading within 1 second of the ignition being put into run. The key on sample readings are considered valid if the fuel sender reading is between 10 ohms ± 2 ohms and 180 ohms ± 4 ohms.
      *Key On Fueling Mode
The key on fueling mode (approximately 60 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires the following conditions be met:
•Engine speed input greater than 0 rpm.
      •The transmission is in park.
      •The ignition is in run.
•At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
In key on fueling mode, a 30 second timer activates after the transmission is put into the PARK position. When the 30 second time has elapsed and at least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity has been added, the fuel gauge response time is 60 seconds to read from empty (E) to full (F). When the transmission is shifted out of park, the fuel gauge strategy reverts to the anti-slosh mode. The key on fueling mode prevents slow to read full events from happening if the customer refuels the vehicle with the ignition in RUN.
      *Recovery Mode
Recovery mode is incorporated into the IPC strategy to recover from a missing fuel level input after a refueling event. Missing fuel level inputs result from intermittent opens in the fuel sender or its circuits. Recovery mode (empty [E] to full [F] approximately 20 minutes) is initiated when the following 2 conditions are met:
•The IPC is in the anti-slosh (default) mode.
•The actual fuel level in the tank is greater than what is being displayed by the fuel gauge.
All that being said, LOL. Have someone scan the IPC module to see if any one of the codes PO460 PO461 PO462 PO463 PO464 are stored. If so then most likely the fuel sender (fuel pump module) needs replaced.
