    David Thaxton does a PHENOMENAL performance of Enjolras here. Almost right out of the book! Yay!

    I love it. This Grantaire is one of the bests. I adore how he played out parts. Like when he was singing his mini solo. And I'm not sure people noticed, but did you guys see how when Enjolras sans "Our little lives don't count at all" Grantaire just looked down and shook his head? I just noticed this, then thought of his solo in 'Drink with me' and I might have cried a little.

      My favourite is the one where Kyle Scatliffe is Enjolras. His angry drunk singing during 'Drink with me', and his mourning over a dead Gavroche broke my heart. But I like the look of this one.

    By far my favorite version of these songs. The students acted as I feel they should, ready and wired to follow Enjolras wherever he goes. And Enjolras' laugh, I think it was a moment of grief for Lamarque mixed with joy that they had the sign they needed. About Marius, I loved the more confrontational personality the actor gave him. And need I say a word about Grantaire? He was perfect. The best version of these songs I have seen anywhere.

    Thaxton is without a doubt the greatest Enjolras of all time. Though I love Ramin dearly, and his voice is incredible, his acting did not do the character justice.

  • @whistlingninja11
    @whistlingninja11 Před 12 lety +14

    Could also be that Enjolras was having an "ah-ha" moment and realizing the irony of it at the same time--the students have been so concerned that Lamarque was the only one in the government sticking up for the people, but now (they think) his death will actually inspire the people to stand up for themselves.

      @@MrWill9002 French rather than German, but all the names can be hard. I still constantly try to spell Bossuet as Bousset. Grantaire is a pun, or multiple actually. It sounds like Grand Aire, so big air, full of hot air, which is fitting with the rants he goes on in the brick. There's also the fact that it sounds similar to grand here, which was old slang even at the time for a wretch, so he would call himself a great wretch. Or the more clear one, grand aire is basically capital R, he goes as far to signing his name as R, and some of the others even call him that. Because, Hugo. Everything is at least one pun if not more or has some deep symbolic meaning. Or both.

    The Grantaire in this vid has a very dark, rich warm sounding voice. Marius is characterized as too confrontational and argumentative here. I prefer when he's in gentle persuasion mode. DT is bested only by Karimloo as far as cutting vocal projection. I'm in a Les Miz production now and the Enjolras is really giving an excellent interpretation but the voice while quite beautiful is a bit undersized. It's a very difficult role to cast since you need someone with looks, charisma AND Pipes.

    I hate it when people are like "this person is so much better than that person". People, please remember that everyone has their own opinion as to who they think is best. Just because someone says they think someone is the best that you don't think is doesn't mean that that person is wrong. It's just their opinion; they're not stating a fact! Just agree to disagree, okay. Personally I think Ramin is the best West End Performer, but that's my opinion! If you don't agree, I'm okay with that!

  • @BeakerandBella
    @BeakerandBella Před 11 lety +7

    They all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Thaxton seems to stay closer to canon Enjolras. Ramin Karimloo is an amazing Enjolras even if his interpretation doesn't always match the book. I love Maguire's Enjolras even though is a little too smug and militant.

    Could be a historical irony. Historically, Lamarque was one of Napoleon Bonaparte's generals. Despite whatever history/sentiments people may have had towards Bonaparte, Lamarque was still a popular figure. I am not sure how Enjolras would have perceived him, since Enjolras (in the book) is a die-hard Republican. But maybe this political difference could explain that wry laugh?

    I don't feel that Thaxton's voice is as powerful or as captivating as Ramin, and Enjolras as a character is passionate and when I saw Les Mis it was the number one character that drew me in, all in all Ramin is on par with the original Enjolras and I feel that he is the best one. Everyone can have their own opinion
