- This is my first car - a one owner squarebody suburban that I’ve been building for the last 400,000+ miles and 20ish years. It’s evolved along with my fabrication and driving skills, and has been my primary vehicle for connecting to other folks in the motorsports community. Only the frame and body are original, so here’s a bit of the story of how the truck came to be.

Those square body Suburbans were built from 1973 through 1991 & they're also the seventh generation Suburbans. Like those square body Suburbans, the square body K5 Blazers, Jimmys, & pickups were also built from 1973 through 1991, except the regular cab pickups were discontinued in 1987 on the half ton & three quarter ton models. The one ton regular cab pickups on the other hand were still in production up through 1989.

Very cool video. I enjoyed watching this. I've been driving Suburbans since 1993. My first Suburban was a 1989 Silverado 1/2 Ton. I bought is used off of a lady from work who's husband had passed away, and she didn't want to drive it. I drove that thing until 2016. All my friends were driving Honda Civics, BMWs Volkswagons....And I was driving this Old Man Truck. Well, one day the 89 got wrecked and I found a 1985 GMC Sierra Grande 6.2 Diesel - 2500 4wd... Drove that for a while Now I drive a 1979 GMC Sierra Classic 2500 4wd.

What’s funny is that I clicked on this video thinking it’s another Cummins swap, but I like the original thing as well. Got a 7.3 idi & love it, had a 7.3 Powerstroke & it was great m, but was a little $$$ to fix & it had an auto & I wanted a stick.
I have a few videos of my old Powerstroke on my channel MikeJD60. The Powerstroke was my first truck. Even then I was smart & did all my mods, so it wouldn’t burn any of the original wiring.
Old school diesel is the only way to fly!

Yeah I was eyeing that thing. My old Suburban is getting the job done with a 6.0 but I would love to go solid axle and Duramax some day. Philmont is a great place to be and I already can't wait until I can get back there, maybe next year.
Had a 1997 Tahoe with 37"x13.5" tires & 9" of lift with 4:56 gears. Even though it was close to 300k miles body & 150k miles engine it was a blast to drive. Well, until the 4L60E crapped out 😅 I'll get another big boy eventually, would like to get an 1988 Suburban & do a similar build one day!

it was really cool to see Moab again in your video. I've been on the trails 17 or 18 different times over the years in my jeep, such a wonderful experience each time.
Go for it! I didn't know how to do any of this stuff until I learned, and this truck has been the test bed for practicing new skills.

I have a build in process, and two builds on the back-burners.
I have an 83 Suburban 4x4 frame that I tossed the body off of. I swapped the 6.2 for a first Gen 5.9. I’m. Going to swap the body from an 89 Suburban onto it.
The next will be to rebuild a 2wd 89 that has a 454.
Then I’ll rebuild a 73 CrewCab that I have and I’m going to use the 3rd Gen 5.9 that I use as my daily driver now.
That will be a darned nice fleet.
Great video. I’m building an 85 diesel suburban right now too. Almost done with an NV4500 swap. I’d like to turbo it but the block has cracks on almost all the main webs (pretty typical with the 6.2), so I’ll probably just drive it like it is for a while.
Cracks happen, and are many times linked to a damper failure. On your new engine, just make sure it's got a fresh damper.

It adds up quickly - bumpers, sliders, winch, axles, Magnum, spare 40, tools, and my personal heft.
its a thing of beauty. I've been on the hunt to get a old suburban like that. Been mostly looking at the 350s with the 700r4...not a daily driver, but want it to be the perfect take the family out, camp, use it for work, I lug film equipment around, go out on my own...utilitarian vehicle. So I don't need it to be fast. And I don't even need real big tires... But don't want it to be slow or have stock tires either. So In walks the idea of diesel. the 6.2 gets hot and cold reviews. But really, I have no understanding of diesel. I'm late to this race and learned how to tool on a toyota truck keeping it moving since I was broke..And to see what you did? Wow, fun. solid stuff...I know it would take a lot to get there but checking out what power people are able to get out of diesels... well I'd be lying if I didn't say I the idea of more power...moves me. In any case, awesome stuff! Looking forward to checking your progress on the charger

Thanks, Chris. Some of it is leftover from 2018 Trail to SEMA (anywhere I have stickers on the truck), but it's mostly mine. I've got some stuff coming for Charger frame rails and unibody prep.
Some few in France, never seen a one like this, and want to say THAT is the Surb I would love to possess one day ! not only lifted, but building for tough use and travel everywhere !! And the ice on the cake, you let the 6.2 in. Kudos bro' !! How you are lucky in US man, here in France it's become really difficult to practice with a 4WD even in trails.

@@WillometMotorFab You welcome man, since I've seen a Silverado and his brother the Suburb', I literally fell in love with. Could you say Why some people replace the 6.2 GM engine by a 5.9 Cummins? Does the 6.2 not reliable enough or there is another reason? Because I really like how you've tuned your truck and let the genuine engine inside it.
The 5.9 is a burly design that can make a huge amount of torque with the standard internals. The 6.2 was designed for optimal fuel economy, and with select upgrades and good maintenance it can make very decent power. 450-500 lb-ft is very achievable, but you've got to want to invest in the platform. Most folks want to go an easier route with an LS or a 5.9. That's fine, too.

Nice rig. Are you running your sway bar on pavement? Just did the diy4x shackle flip on my rig. Can't put it back on with the new u bolt plates. Wondering if its necessary? Thanks
I haven’t run a swaybar at all in quite a while, but really should have. ORD just came out with one that works with crossover steering.

Thank you sir - glad you’re here. I’ll go into more detail as y’all would like. The engine could get an episode of its own, and I’ll put that on the list.
I have no idea if that Heath kit will fit a 6.2. The threading in the blocks is likely the same, and any aftermarket oil cooler kit is ultimately trying to get away from the junk factory lines. If there is any compatibility problem, it probably would be hose length.
@@WillometMotorFab An episode on the engine alone would be a very good idea. All I have ever heard about it, and the 6.5 for that matter, is to swap it for a Cummins or Duramax. Your truck seems to handle itself very well in the rocks and doesn't seem to have a lack of power, considering it's weight.
DieselAddicted solid idea. They’re good powerplants when you take care of them. Just don’t go looking for 1000 lb-ft
Amazing build I have 2 85 burbs one fully optioned with electric windows and locks front and rear air and one plain Jane tailgate model with 6 inches of lift and 35s my dream is to combine the 2 and make 1 awesome wheeling machine

Fast and light?
I’m wanting to do a coil over 1 ton conversion on my 85 k10 with 40s. Just wanting a super smooth ride on the highway. Im capable of doing it myself but just don’t know if this is over kill for just running the highway. The 10” lift now all leafs is crazy bumpy. Any suggestions ?
Links improve ever aspect of handling. I do a lot of highway driving, too, and am looking forward to the improvements.

Depending on what I’m doing, 14-17 on pavement. Offroad crawling is a smidge less.

Badass rig. What’s the actual vehicle weight? You had said 8,500 lbs but that’s most likely the gross vehicle weight rating (maximum weight fully loaded)
It's actually 8500 pounds with a full tank, a spare, and yours truly in the seat. Suburbans are heavy.
8500?!! I weighed in at 7100 with a 24v cummins, Dana 60 front, frame 80% boxed and my ass sitting in it
It's a lot. I weighed it with gear and a spare, 40 gallons of diesel, plus Kurt and me in the front. It's a surprisingly short leap from where you're at to over 8000.
what MPG it get now with all the mods at highway speeds?
With the new 6.5, 15-16.5 depending on the terrain.

Hey brother. I don't have a diesel or 1 tons. But I have a 1/2 ton suburban. Mine is trimmed similar to yours. Can I use what I have, or scrap everything and start over?
Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. I built this over 20 years, so start small and work from there. What do you want to do with your truck?

you said first gear ratio is 2.5 to 1 and final drive ratio is 4.88 to 1 so if low range of transfer case is 2.72 then crawl ratio will be 33 to 1 not 55.am l missing sth?
The magnum box and 205 work together, so the 33:1 you correctly calculated gets multiplied again by 2 through the 205, thus around 65:1

Mine has a 6.5 out of a hummer and a holset hx35, but I'm only running 33s. Daily Driver!
That holset is a great pairing for the 6.5. I love my 35/40.
Does NOT weigh 8500 lbs, 6500 tops
