Can a Scythe Actually Go where a Mower Can’t

  • The slope was slippery and steep, and it was early morning, so I didn’t want to mow. But, can this European Scythe actually do the work? Also in the vlog, cooking food for the pigs. That amazing Scythe I was using (not sponsored): bit.ly/ScytheSupply

A couple of things with the scythes. Keeping them sharp is more difficult than cutting with them ;) Use your stone frequently to keep the edge honed. Traditionally, when the mowers would scythe all day long, they would peen their blades at the lunch break. Figure every four or five hours of normal use, you'll want to peen the blade. When you're cutting with the brush/ditch blade and you've got something really tough, I find it can be good to place the blade against the stalk and give it a jerk, turning my hips to pull it sharply against the stem. On hillsides, I generally find it easier to work facing up the hill - it's easier to raise the angle of the swing while keeping my balance than trying to work facing down the hill, When I'm facing uphill, I can still get a nice full swing and keep it level pretty easily. Working sidehill, it's very hard to keep the blade at the same level relative to the ground and I get an uneven cut, short on the uphill side, long on the downhill side. Scything is a great core workout ;)

When you're using the scythe, less arm action, more torso rotation ;) You want to drive the whole process from your legs.

Agreed. Especially after reviewing my time with Jim while on the farm tour.

I just recently got my scythe too, and had the same reaction! Magnificaent tool, so pleasant to use. I look forward to scything each morning lately, clearing the orchard floor. So good!!!

And, to add, for sure: Thank YOU for doing the videos with Jim Kovaleski on your tour, as without that, I never would have even known about a scythe. So thank you, thank you!!!!!

No worries...Laurel will not like the taste of that frog. LoL. But yeah...our dogs would worry it to death.
That scythe work is so enticing. A scythe has been at the top of my wish list since your first experience with it on the GAFT. I just need to call them and get their help with all those choices.

Keep your blade on the ground for smoother results. And watch for rocks. Just broke my first blade from catching it on a rock mid-swing :(

😁 Thats nice to show 😁
your scythe is not a machete. Let them slide across the floor all the way. The tip must always stay just above the ground. The scythe cuts in the front and clears it in the back.

:) you managed to convince me I need to get my scythe out and free my garden from it's prison of weeds...I can't run my mower on it cause it's nice tilled soil...just been too lazy to do it! lol Tip for scything: do it early while everything is moist - past 9am it's too dry. But moist greens cut nice. It's worth the investment & much more fun that string trimmers and less dangerous.

My wife and I bought scythes from Scythe Supply.
We live close enough to Perry, Maine, in southern New Brunswick, that we were able to pop by and be personally measured for our scythes.
That was a fun day. They even gave us scything lessons.

Fully enjoy your escapade. That blade need to stay a hair of the ground mainly and you swing your upper body. (See that clip you included.) Swinging and blade will cut annything it hits at a angle, cutting like a knife. Makes your arms last longer,-)

Swing from your hips, you are using your arms only. Have another look at your wonderful video when you were introduced to this method. You will switch your current technic for sure. I'm sure you will figure it out.
