Made In Chef Knife Review (Wusthof Killer)

- Today we are reviewing the Made In chef knife! We will also do a small comparison with another popular DTC (Direct to Consumer) chef knife, the Misen. The Made-In reminds me a lot of the Wusthof's profile but I actually like the Made-In more.
There are several things that the Made-In is superior to the Wusthof:
1.) Both are made with X50CrMoV15 steel. But Made-In took an additional step of nitrogen treating the steel to create an even more durable wear resistance steel to a Rockwell rating between 58-60.
2.) Price point. The Made-In is made with an enhanced material but with a price point that is lower than Wusthof. The Made-In is priced at $89. The very popular Wusthof Ikon Classic retails at $169+tax. That is 2X the cost of the Made-In. For the amount you spend on an Ikon Classic, you could've bought two of the Made-Ins and gift one of them to someone you like (Pick some one you really like, because this knife is the shit!)
3.) Risk-Free Trial. You can try the knife out for 30 days and if you don't like it, you get your money back. That shows how confident they are in their product that you will like it enough to keep it.

In order to "kill" Wüsthof, this brand must first proof it can stay in business. Just like Misen they haven't been around for very long and there are already rumors that they're soon to be gone again. Wüsthof has been making knives since over 200 years.
Great Review, but please just get on with the knife review. Showing the box and the knife in the box for 2 minutes is two minutes more you can spend on reviewing the knife.
I comment on this with other utube
Thank you so much for the feedback and I really appreciate it! That is definitely a resonating feedback and I agree with you. I have changed it up for my newer videos and am getting straight to the review. Thanks for watching!
nah, not long winded at all....
@@Exxeron-ob3tv Thank you! I have made my current content a lot more concise and it also helped me with my public speaking :)
i agree. had to play 2x speed...
Hey all! Would love to hear what you think of the video. How is the quality? Thoughts on length of video or what I should talk about? What kind of tests would you like to see to test sharpness?
Please Like & Subscribe 😊🙏
Just wanted to take a second and reply because after watching a couple of your videos (before i noticed your subscriber count) I thought you'd have way more subscribers. Your videos have the quality of the much larger channels, my only minor criticism is that it seems like you take a bit too long slowly panning over things. Your bread test video for example you spent way too much time slowly going over the bread. Apart from those minor slow spots in your videos the quality is amazing. I really rarely comment on videos but you're truly doing an amazing job. I also wouldn't mind actually seeing you talk in your videos more, rather than the voice over type. But that's more of a personal preference I have, it tends to make me feel more engaged but again probably just a weird quirk i have.(Ive only seen 3 of your videos so far so take everything I said with a grain of salt)
@@Xploit66 Thank you so much for such a wonderful critique! I really appreciate the feedback and your support! I get what you are saying about the slow spots. I will try to do better about getting straight to the material. As for the voice over type, it becomes a necessity at times due to recording with a 4 year old in the background screaming about snacks lol. Again, thank you so much!!!
@@BetweenTwoForks Ah I totally get the need for the voice over aspect then. I really more mean the video framing, dont be afraid to zoom out a bit so people can see all of you. I get the need for close shots on the product itself when you're showing off details but when you're talking and just waving it about (talking with your hands) it would be nice to be able to see facial expressions rather than hand gestures if that makes sense lol. I just feel that it is a lot more engaging when you can make eye contact and see someones facial expressions when they're talking. But again thats mostly personal preference I think, I've seen a lot of videos done with your style and they do really well. You can easily tell that you put a lot of thought and effort into your videos, they are super high quality, I just dont like a talking torso haha.
@@Xploit66 Gotcha!! Haha, I see what you are saying now. I will definitely try that out. I think since I am just starting out that I'm a bit camera shy lol. But I 100% agree that it is much more engaging and a lot more interactive when it is a person instead of a torso speaking to you :) Thank you so much for taking the time to give such valuable feedback!
I think I'm going to choose the messer meridian stealth/olive version. This one looks great too though.
I buy too many chef knives... my wallet is screeming
The struggle is real! 😂 I have the same problem. Lol
This could have been a 4 minute video, too much fluff
Thanks for the feedback! Agreed. Our newer videos, I try to be more efficient and get straight into it. Thanks for watching! 😃🙏
OMG we're four minutes in and you haven't even OPENED THE BOX yet!
Aaand we're up to eight minutes and you haven't yet taken it OUT of the box. You lost me.
@@stevenpaulin448 we agree with you! This is was one of our earlier videos where we were still getting use to reviewing. Our new videos are much more efficient if you'd give it a chance. Thanks and happy holidays!
I’m in the market for new knives and don’t feel like I should have to pay for Wusthof… do I go Misen or Made in?
Hi! Personally, I will go the Misen route because I personally like the knife more. Both are fantastic choices but just depends on what you like. Here is where I did a comparison of the two knives:
czcams.com/video/9KneQT619EY/video.html
Hope this helps and thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Go for Wüsthof, they're just a more reputable and reliable company. Checking the latest prices, they're not even more expensive than the other two despite treating and paying their emplyees much better.
Chef's knife--(for me) MUST be a rocker. Just might order 1 "Made In". As much as the Misen is still a great deal. Maybe I'll get one of those too..when I feel like spending for the sake of.
Like to see how the Made In compares to the Mann Kitchen MX9...blade length aside..pls consider getting a butternut squash for the cutting test. I came across a YouSTube knife test of a JP Blue #2 steel traditional Gyuto that got chips cutting that squash. Surprised. Don't know what on the squash was so hard.
My money would be on the Mann Kitchen MX9...looks beefy. Compared to almost any chef's knife out there. Prefer the western design (handle, half bolster and blade shape).
Just from my experience using both knives. The MK9 definitely is a much better knife. A bit on the heavier side but handle is more comfortable and the steel is much better with a 63hrc compared to the made in.
I will see if I can pick up a butternut squash for a quick test
If a rocker style knife is important to you; I'd recommend checking out an Ulu-style knife!
@@panzerkiller13 thank you so much for the recommendation. I will have to check it out 🙏😊
What kind of material is the handle made of ? Also what's the thickness of the spine and is it tapered ?
Thank You
Hi! I am not sure about the handle. It is some sort of plastic/resin. The spine is 2.4mm and have a great distal taper. thin blade with edge thickness at 0.4mm behind the edge. 😊
I was all set to order up a Misen 2.0, then I saw this video. Plus Austin isn't terribly far from me and for 275.00$ I can get four of their knives, including the santoku!
I think both of them are great knives. I personally like the Misen's a bit more. I'm getting ready to do a misen vs madein video soon. Their santoku is def one of my favorote knoves to use. Only gripe I have is that is is not as tall as I'd like but minor for how good it is. Overall chef, I prefer the Misen 😊
3:54 seconds. You’re welcome.
That’s awesome but I feel like this review is a bit misleading. I bought my girlfriend a chef’s knife and paring knife and the edge was total crap out of the box. I immediately had to put them to a stone to sharpen it to where it should have been.
Hey, thanks for sharing your feedback! That is very unfortunate. Were you able to reach out to Made In to get this corrected? I also have another one of their knives that I got after this video was made that was not as sharp as I want it to be from factory.
I have the Misen 2.0, Wusthof Ikon and Classic. I like all of them and use them all on a rotating basis. The bolster on the Wusthof Classic does not prevent sharpening. The Wusthof Ikon has the same type half bolster as the Misen and Made In knife so thus easy to sharpen or hone. I am getting a Made In chef knife just for fun. Can't wait to compare.
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Madein. I like the wushtofs because of how easily they sharpen and their ability to take a steel. That is also another important thing especially for pro cooks
Neat, the Ikon line is only double the price of the MadeIn too to get a half bolster.
I'm puzzled, is it French or is it US ? And, in the last case, can it be bought from France without extra shipping cost ?
It is made in France but an American based company. I bet if you reach out to Made In, they might be able to make some kind of arrangement. Sorry, wish I could help more. Thanks for your support! 😃🙏
@@BetweenTwoForks Ok, thanks to you !!
Your allergies are not kicking in, your crying tears of cooking joy.
Hahaha love this! This will be my new way of calling it 😁🙏
Can you compare these knives to Hexclad knives?
Hey! I might not be able to get to it but I did take a look and researched a bit. I have a feeling those are just generic made in China 67-layer Damascus that you find a dime a dozen on Amazon Damascus chef knives but Hexclad just branded it themselves and put a heftier price tag on it. They are not bad knives and they are great if you find a great price on Amazon under an off brand. But depending on you budget and what you want 😃🙌
@@BetweenTwoForks Hi! Thank you for the reply. It's much appreciated. I'm glad I didn't order any!
@@vmchapman20 you are most welcome!! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 😃🙏
Love this knife!!!! Great review!!
Thank you! Glad you like the knife. Love the company and definitely love that they are based in Austin TX
Too much build up the test!! Does it cut onions?
Thank you for the feedback! I've been getting right into it for my newer videos. Yes, the knife goes tbrough an onion with no issues. Their new santoku is one of my favorotes. Super thin blade 🙂
Where did you get the 12.5 degree angle from?
Hey! It is on their website. Its kind of obscured away in the help section under frequently asked questions. Took a while for me to get that info for the video 😂
@@BetweenTwoForks Im getting ready to sharpen mine for the 1st time on my wicked edge. Its really dull right now but Ive used it quite a bit. Judging from how dull it is & only ever used on a rubber cutting board I dont think Im gonna give it such a fine edge, maybe 15 or so
@@Metalhead-4life you do you! 🤙The wicked edge is awesome and love how you can adjust the degrees. A 15 degree is a great angle for most kitchen prep work. I free hand, so I just eye mine. Good thing is that German steel is super easy to sharpen 😃
@@BetweenTwoForks Glad to hear it. Im not real good at free hand lol Thanks!
@@Metalhead-4life same 😂 I just keep going til it cuts. Thanks for watching! 🙏
How does it feel compare to misen??
I'm glad you asked! I actually like the misen more after using both for extended time. The Made In's handle is a bit on the small side and a bit to round. So it doesn't fit comfortably especially with a pinch grip. The handle just falls around. With the new Misen 2.0's better steel, additional height clearance and redesign bolster, it's an easy choice to go with the Misen 2.0 😊
Interesting , because based on wired review it only received 3 out 10 star , it was also stated that wuthof classic still outperform misen.
Me personally think wusthof classic is xoxk
@@joshuaaxelio7631 I actually like some of the reviews on Wire. Personally, I find Wushtof's edge retention is just ok. Maybe just a personal preference thing but from my expereince, even the ol' Aus8 Misen retained an edge much longer than a Wushtof and in general Standard german steel (X50CrMoV15). What are you using now?
I have tried global g2 , hands down better than wusthof classic imo, zwilling Henkel also feel better in hand compared to wusthof ( but I've only tried for 2/3 hours only, due to the heavy weight I think it will cause some fatigue)
Atm, I have moritaka kiritsuke aogami blue , it is a carbon knives
I'm planning to buy another chef knife as workhorse, windwill k5 or Mac pro ( def want Thomas Keller edition yet it is not sold separately) comes in mind...
@@joshuaaxelio7631 sorry for the late response! YT didn't alert me of the reply or I missed it. I totally understand wanting a stainless steel as a daily work horse to not have to think about constantly having to wipe down the blade. Mac's are great knives. I think the Thomas Keller edition is no longer available. If you are willing to give it a chance, the Cangshan Thomas Keller series is bananas! The RWL34 powdered steel it uses is sharp AF and the edge retention is amazing. Had it for more than 6 months for home prep and have yet needed to sharpen it. Also, the ergonomics is great amd lightweight. This is an even bigger deal for a work horse when having to prep on the line.
Awesome channel I've been binging since I found it. Just so you know, the Wusthofs do come "bolster-less", they're just not that common. They call it "half bolster" but it's the same as these Made Ins. I agree that my Wusthof classic could have been better, the spine and choil finish (roundedness) is not very comfortable for the price I paid. I found a video you posted where you fix a Misen, I will be trying that soon on my Wusthof and Tojiro, I hope I don't fuck it up LOL.
Thank you so much for the support! I really appreciate it 😃 thanks for the heads up on the wusthofs. Have you had a chance to round off the knives? Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. You got this! 💪
i know I'm kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to stream new tv shows online ?
@Carmelo Lennon flixportal :P
@Alexander Cyrus thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it!
@Carmelo Lennon Glad I could help =)
Cuts tomato in multiple motions? Nah I'll pass.
Thanks for watching! 😃
Wusthof killer? LOL!!!!😆
Caught your attention though lol jk I think so. Both are exact same german x50crmov15. Made In is cryo treated to create more martensitic stainless steel. I also like that it doesnt have a full bolster that inhibits shapening.
Two commercials before you even show the knife. Too much unnecessary commentary.
Agree with you! It is a resounding feedback. This was when I first started reviewing. All of my current content is much more efficient and straight to the point. Thank you for watching! 😃🙏
Seems like a nice guy but this 20+ video could’ve been 8 minutes without all the unnecessary commentary. I could be a fb with a little more polish/refinement.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I totally agree with you. This was one of our first review videos. Our new videos try to get to the point and be as efficient as possible. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 😃🙏
Okay guy, I can do that tomato thing with a cheap knife on a 1000 grit stone, and I ain't no master. Try a real test, or use a BESS. Break a chicken fast. How about edge retention? Most of all, where is your Rockwell tester?
Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I have a follow up video which I talk about edge retention. Can you tell me more about a BESS? What is that? As for breaking a chicken fast is probably not a skill I have without losing a finger 😂 as for a Rockwell tester. I wish! I have actually looked into getting one. But unfortunately, even a beat up used one is several hundred dollars. Kinda hard to justify it when I'm not pulling in big 💰💰💰 from youtube. But I'm definitely open to suggestions on a good sharpness test. I know there are filament testers too that I have seen Ryky from burrfection use.

@@lesberkley3821 ahh ok! Yup, the same thing that burrfection uses. I will have to look into that 👍
My god this could be a 7 min video.
I am pretty much sure that this brand will disappear soon without being able to kill wusthof and wusthof will survive for another 100 years against many killers. Thank you and have a nice day.
Hey! You are entitled to your opinion. I highly doubt they will dissappear soon. They are are a fast growing American made cookware company. I wish both companies the very best. Have a good one and thanks for watching! 🙂
Is the knifes! And still going strong
I reckon this guy touches himself while playing with his wustof knife.
