Happy holidays everyone! Today we have a LONG video that is long overdue. It's a bit late because I was sick (again!), but finally, it has arrived, just in time for the end of the year. I will share some thoughts on downsizing and manageable plant collections.

I’ve downsized my collection and I do NOT regret it. I’ve tossed some and I’ve gifted others. It made me feel so much more sane.
I think that is all that matters
I am easily annoyed by people, but I find you entertaining and friendly to listen to! There are a handful of plant youtubers I cannot bear to watch because I get irritated with them so quickly (I feel bad saying that, it's not personal!). But I'm glad I found you and I enjoy watching your channel!
Oh, I can relate :D I am also sometimes very easily (and very irrationaly) annoyed xD It's an honor then to be in the circle of people who don't annoy you :D
I grew cacti from seeds and there was just so many. Some I sold, threw out and eventually gave them away for free lol. Your mental health is more important than plants.
I have to say that watching you being rather ruthless lessens my anxiety around being brutal with my Hoya. My collection bloomed from the three Hoya I started with to 200 and now I am constantly dealing with issues. I have found myself looking at them and thinking there are quite a few that I just don’t find interesting. Seeing you do this has solidified my resolve in judging, pairing down, and really deciding which attributes that I want in my collection. Thank you.
A lot of the times, we have to get them, see them in person, experience the flowers and then decide how we feel about them. Photos lie. I can take a photo of polynerua that would make you want 5, but once you have it, you won't want it for too long. xD
I’ve started to downsize more the ones that don’t bring me joy, despite being maybe sought after or really popular. Just because everyone else is obsessed with them, I don’t have to be!
Exactly! :) I have the same feeling. I am much more obsessed with all-green ones, that I find special, nice-looking & that bloom all the time and actually have pretty flowers that smell good :D

I need to downsize my collection. Every time someone on CZcams mentioned a Hoya and recommended it, I felt like I needed it. Unfortunately all of those “needs it” are no longer wanted. I have some that are my favorites and I will not part with them. I am glad you are feeling better.

I think being a collector and a completionist are two different things. If someone wants to collect anything but is unable to get all or most varieties of that thing, that doesn’t mean they are not in the process of collecting.

I found out I'm pregnant and pretty much immediately, my urge to keep any of my rehab or second chance plants went out the window. I went from around 60 different pots to probably 35. Some were given to family, others composted - and I don't miss a single one. I feel lighter and happier and Im able toactually see and spend time with the plants that I LOVE in my collection.
10/10 would be friends with Miro

I’ve downsized my orchid collection. Now my hoyas outnumbered my orchids. Alongside my aroids are growing and taking a lot of space. I’m scared come spring next year….

I am currently thinking about my collection as well and I have decided to not make a drama about plants that do not make it. Whoever is a drama queen can leave and stay away 😬 However, only keeping plants you really want or are really interested in can be a bit difficult. I have a regular Carnosa here, 14 or 15 years old, have grown it from a one leaf cutting and it is basically taking up half the living room space it's so big. Do I resent it? Yes. Is it going anywhere after all these years? Nope. But I am starting to recognize what plants do well in my environment, which ones bloom willingly and without a fuss and these are the ones I started liking a lot. I have stopped buying new plants for 6 months or more now, so that's good, too :)

I've downsized a bit in the past and I'm doing it again. I had some hoyas and philos that were monsters but didn't bring me any joy, just consumed all the daylight from my windows. I stopped buying cuttings that would eventually grow to a problem-sized plant and moved to orchids, as they grow a lot smaller and I keep them in terrariums, so they physically cannot consume my living space, heh. Cheers for the video!
I do enjoy orchids, too! I don't have too many, about 9 and 6 out of them are either already blooming or working on a flower stalk. They are sooo easy care and willing and long bloomers.

I went from 600 to 100 and it’s been hard I miss my babies but also I have time to live my life more and just relax. Plants were becoming a chore.

Maybe you have come up with a video idea: hoyas that age well....and some that do not. Of course you would have to have examples. Also, hoyas that aren't worth the dripping nectar, or unpleasant odor. Anyway; all obsessions need to be reined in eventually. Isn't moderation supposed to be the key to success? I completely agree that if you had more space, like Doug Chamberlon, or a greenhouse you would not have reached your limit yet, but we have to live with what we have at the moment. Sorry about this rant. Does utube care about the length of the comments, or only the number? Thought I would help you out today. Stay healthy, take care of yourself. Without you, your plants would be of no consequence at all.

Thoroughly enjoy your videos! I started to downsize/trash dying plants with no regrets! 2023 was about acquiring plants , 2024 is about enjoying and being choosy about which plants to add to my loving space😊

I have all of five Hoyas in my collection, I not here for Hoyas here for you
I am watching this from Alberta, Canada. The cold country. lol I have really been enjoying watching this video in particular, because it made me check my Thanksgiving Cactus, and one I really wanted to live, was a small piece of plant, but when I checked it, it had some roots, but was starting to rot. So I cut the rot off, and put it into much lighter soil than it was in. Plus put rooting hormone on it. I think it is too late. But you gave me the inspiration to get up and do it, while I paused your video. LOL. You hit me at the right time, with your cuttings. I only have one little Hoya I saved out of the garbage can, at a plant store. It was sick, but I cleaned it up, very well, re-potted it, and kept it away from my other plants. It is just now starting to grow. Which makes me very Happy. I'm a sucker for trying to save plants from the trash. But this is my only one in a very long time. I only want the one Hoya, just to enjoy. But I hope you find your dream plants. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I have learned a lot from you. Thank You.
I set my goal to have pretty plants.It's not really a specialized collection as I like too many kinds of plants (hoya, ferns, suculents, aroids,...) but I try to propagate them to fill up the planters. Solo stem of many plants just isn't the way for me(Hi, half of the philodendrons). From time to time I also enjoy checking everything and giving some stuff away.

"Ohhh! What's wrong with pon? I have all my hoyas in pon. It's also true that I only have 35 hoyas, but most of them have been recently added and are still rooting. I thought pumice is one of the best options because it's inorganic, and I don't need to worry about repotting. 😅
It simply didn't work for me with so many hoyas and in my conditions. If it works for you, and for your species, I'd keep using it :) I think pumice is different than pon though; it's regular lava rock that is giving me issues, I believe.

When "collecting" turns into "hoarding", you know that something has to change. You know I more or less stopped buying new plants in 2023. Buying plants became something like an addiction and that's never a good thing.

30 is totally enough to be a collector. Plants take up so much space, it's not at all like stamps which are TINY. I have a small collection, I have a large collection. Both are collectors.
Just in time, Miro) I am thinking on downsizing from 40+ to 20-25. Since i have a child and a garden, my poor Hoyas are often neglected.

People can be a little precious and/or judge-y when it comes to houseplants. They are plants . . . like grass that you mow, lettuce that you eat. How many times have you bought lettuce and ended up tossing it because it went bad? No one freaked the freak out about it. It's your plant and yours to decide if it's worth the time, effort, and space that it takes up. Granted, this was a mental hurdle that I had to make peace with when I was overrun with African violets years ago. If a plant looks bad and I don't think it's worth the effort to save it, I toss it. If I fall out of love with one that someone else may value, I give it away. At the end of the day, we get into the hobby because it brings us happiness. When the scale tips and it's just bringing us stress, then it's time to make some changes. No one should feel bad about it or judge someone dealing with it. Further thoughts . . . I like the long videos. You asked for a "best advice": A friend of mine said, "Manage your expectations of people. You shouldn't get upset with them for not meeting expectations that you put on them." I'll let you know if and when I accomplish this, but I thought it was good advice. Sorry that your time in the U.S. was not the "full experience." You should come back! Starbucks is everywhere. And The Cheesecake Factory is delicious! ;) Happy New Year, Miro!
I downsized this winter and it feels great, got more room for more wish list plants! In fact I got myself a Thai Constellation and Philo Florida green as the first. I really need to reorganize now that’s the next task
The question of whether you can call yourself a collector with a small collection? I think that’s subjective, I don’t believe 200 Hoyas is a small collection, I have approx 100 plants total and I feel like a collector 🤷♀️
We are in the same dilemma
I hope everyone is fine and surviving the anxiety season well ❤
(Small hoya rant below) Here are a few things that helped me and maybe will help you too, and they're not difficult:
- have a gift list in autumn (I write it September) and start thinking about what you're going to gift people. This takes a lot of the pressure off. You can also budget for it.
- buy the gifts in fall (I usually do it in October-November), whenever you feel like you have the energy or when you find a good deal for something on your list
- turn off your alarms and sleep as much as you want at least 1 day a week without feeling guilty about it
- start your day with 2 glasses of water, it will make you feel better. We're all houseplants with anxiety, and we usually underwater ourselves.
- try to take a walk outside for a few minutes every day. You don't need to socialize, just walk around, preferably in the sun.
- if you're going to be forced to face that relative who is super judging and unnecessarily curious about your life, do a little bit of online stalking so that you can throw the ball back in their court (instead of answering, bring up some issue of theirs instead, they'll be embarrassed and stop bothering you)
You may also consider NOT buying something super pretty and quite expensive around this time simply because plants are alive and things that are alive can die on you. I'm talking about Hoya Sigillatis. I paid way too much for some very teeny tiny cuttings. One died on me. I tried again. It's looking bad. My energy is super low because it's the holidays. I'll try to root this second one but I'm a little bit frustrated.
Edit: Secret Garden are selling hoyas in Romania and also offer shipping in Europe. They have a whole hoya section. They update the lists weekly. The only mention is to stay away for plants on sale because they have issues. If you're fine and confident you can handle a plant that has been a little bit stressed, took a bit of a hit, sure, you can try, but set your expectations accordingly.
Edit 2: 40:59 I will absolutely replicate this. Lazy fits me best this time of the year. I'll throw the Sigillatis in a bag and hope for the best.
Edit 3: I forgot I got rid of plastic bags and replaced them with paper. A glass with cling wrap is gonna be my "bag".
I downsized 3 times last year with 200 -300 plants each purge. Then I purged all of my Hoyas ( 250 +) .
I am now down to 1 room FULL of Cacti, Euphorbia and other Succulents. I started over 1000 cactus seeds and just ordered 500 more lol. But they will take less room than giant plants (for a few years at least).
I was sooooo sick of Hoyas and their obsession with mealybugs, flat mites and other drama. Plus their prices are dropping like flies, everyone and their mom are selling them, so they weren't worth the trouble for me any longer.
Now I can avoid my plant room for days and I only see progress instead of dealing with the plants multiple times a day.
P.s. my plants were everywhere before the purges, now I only have them in 1 big room during winter. Seedlings will stay indoors all year, the rest will go out for spring to late fall .

Some hoyas are such a pain to pot😅 . Or some are like- which is the top and which was the bottom part?! After longer speculations, when hot sweat changes to the cold , the deduction method helps ( like stem here is wider, probably it’s the bottom part, and still, in the middle of the night creeping evil thoughts come😅

OH Miro. If you would relocate to USA I would get rid of all but my most favorite plants and turn my house over to you and your hoya collection. Except the the master bedroom and bath. Far from a castle. I do have 5 cats and two dogs that have to stay.
Im down sizing mine. I have no where near as many as u but iam doing the whole if it dies im not replacing them unless its my wish list ones. Nothing wrong with wanting to make life easier for ur self and more space.
I had a krimson priness with mealy bugs which turned out worse then 1st thought, i binned it. Ive lost my verigated kerrii to root rot recently to. X

I have tossed cuttings just in the prop box, a little water in the box. super lazy. they grow!!
Have you come across any pests that are NOT mealy bugs that makes your hoyas super sappy on all of its leaves? I used a microscope and could not find any pests that are doing this but I also havent eliminated the thought that those suckers may have the ability to burrow and evade detection. Just wondering if you've come across something this weird! I have around 400 hoyas now and feel like the pest army is trying to get me institutionalized.
