I played this to my newborn son to he could sleep. When I checked on him in the morning he was standing in the crib and told me "Father, the sleeper has awakened."
David Lynch is far too hard on himself about Dune. I think it is excellent. What a monumental task to adapt such a novel. Overall it is an incredible film.
I think the movie has aged very well... I have seen it as a kid (thanks to my father) when it was released in 1984, and two years ago, I have seen it on Netflix for the first time in years, and man I really tripped during many beautiful scenes ! :) Maybe the battle scenes are not the best ever filmed (Lynch as a director is not known for that type of scenes to say the least LOL) but there are many terrific things in this adaptation... :) In a way it is normal that Lynch does not like the film, because it is certainly his least personal work (the same happened with Kubrick and Spartacus), but nevertheless it is indeed an excellent science fiction picture, very poetic and profound and often dark and adult (when you think that it was released just a year after "Return of the Jedi" - which I loved also actually, being a Star Wars fan - a sequel that was so children oriented you can understand why it was rejected by a large part of the public then !)...
Never watched this movie, but can't believe this is an almost 40 year old song. Then again it is Brian Eno. The guy's music sounded like it was 30 years ahead of its time.
And when Paul's fury dissipated, there was only him left. No Harkonnen, no Reverend Mother, no Padishah Emperor. Only him. When his fury dissipated, he sobered, and he wept. For what had proceeded his actions was the Jihad raging in his name. The Fremen lashed across the known universe, removing all bastions of the Corrino dynasty. Paul, Muad'Dib, Usul, he had become a messiah. But at what cost?
The end of the old and beginning of the Golden Path. Weep for Usul. He was not strong enough to support the weight. His son surpassed the father. Blessed be Leto II. The God Emperor chose damnation to liberate humanity from the shackles he made ourselves.
There's a uncut movie that I never seen and I'm going to buy it. That movie is actually longer than this loop music in the video. I think it's about 3 hours and 17 minutes uncut Dune.

Say what you want about David Lynch's Dune, he (along with the composer of this music) was able to achieve an epic, mystical, prophetic, and ethereal flavor in the film that fit the book well. I think that is because he focused on the religious messianic themes in the book, even though he departed drastically from the story. More modern versions just turn Dune into a dry story of political rivalry and war, not much different from other sci-fi films. His version had an undeniable feeling of mystical destiny throughout that was enthralling.
Astonishingly Lynch has no idea how outstanding his film is. I think it still is the best interpretation of Dune, in tv and cinema, and one of the all time great sci-fi films. Sure, a few special effects aren't that good, but this film still has the best version of the sandworms and many of the costumes are just outstanding. The "mood" or the "tone" is befitting the mystical tale that is Dune. I love the film with all it's flaws.
But the fact is that Frank Herbert just tried to warn us of the dangers of messianism, so that's why the movie failed. The upcoming film will be mystical enough, and at least it will respecct the message.
@@zannaifacedancer5915 And I think Herbert was misunderstood. It's his novel that is a warning against messianism, but make no mistake the story is about a messianic figure, which is why the film is absolutely on point. Paul Atreides and his sister aren't really human anymore, when they "ascend", and that's the dangerous part, as in real life this obviously is when delusions of grandeur sever a person's connection to reality and they find themselves "no longer bound by human ethics". The point in this story is that the "ascension" actually happens, but the problem remains the same. These people, who seek elevation above the human struggle, lose the ability to interact with the "world" they intended to "save". The "moral" here is that "becoming a god" doesn't solve any of the problems that plague the "mortals". I actually doubt that any new interpretation in cinema or tv will ever again manage to come that close, to the mood and the message of the novel, as David Lynch's film.
I have to say even though they have the remake of Dune coming out in 2020 of December always still have David Lynch's movie of Dune a warm place in my heart.
@@Reactionary_Harkonnen No, Ridley Scott was supposed to make the original Dune movie. He had been developing the Dune project right after he completed working on Alien. He left the Dune production to work on Blade Runner after Dune ran into delays and problems, and the project eventually went to David Lynch. But I wish Ridley had gone back to making Dune right after finishing Blade Runner instead of going to work on Legend.
Now in my 40s I have wondered and marvelled at many a sci-fi/fantasy film from the 1980s. Yet somehow Dune got past me and I only watched the film in its entirety a few weeks ago. I can see why at the time it was a commercial disaster but I was absolutely enthralled from start to finish and the whole soundtrack is stunning. Watching this film is an experience and, to my knowledge, there has never been anything made like it before or since. The end credits are a work of art in themselves...

In my view it was ahead of it's time. Getting the book into one movie - what a crazy move! I think it still looks amazing too, for my money better imagined than the recent remake (although I did enjoy it and rate Villeneuve highly). The performances from the ensemble cast (except Sting) are excellent. And I agree 100% about the awesome soundtrack. Glad you enjoyed this cinematic masterpiece.
Every time I hear this track I get this deep, soul rending, almost violent longing and nostalgia for my 80s childhood, to the point it's physically painful. Vangelis' "Blade Runner" OST also evokes the same sensation.

I know people say that it failed and all, but this movie has a special place in my life. My dad first introduced me to this series by watching this movie with my brother and I as kids, its stuck with me as being one of the best sci fi films Ive ever seen since I was 8-9 years old. For a film that tries to fit several insanely long books into one representation, I think they did an amazing job and I will always see this movie and its soundtrack as a master piece.
Master piece is really the word. It was hard to get this past the studios in the 1980s with endless attempts to recut and infringe on Lynch's vision, but nowadays it would not even get that far. I'm curious if the remake will get even close to the original. Villeneuve has big shoes to fill but judging from his take on Blade Runner we can be hopeful it will honour the original.
I was 11 when my dad took me to see this wonderful film when it debuted. I still love the movie even for all it's imperfections. The production quality is/was off the charts! It's a nice childhood time-capsule for me. Sharing a salute with you for sci-fi loving father's who passed the joy for the genre on to their kids. :)
The new film made me revisit the original Lynch version and I must say it's always had an impact on me. I found it difficult to follow, but it always stuck with me and found it intruding. The music in both the 1984 film and 2021 film is amazing. But I would say the music in the 84 version is slightly better, for it has more depth and drama and really takes me to another world.
Music is full of expressions of love, desire, vivacity, hope, transcendence, triumph in abject circumstances, energy, joy, confidence, excitement-the stuff of life.
As a professional artist I have to say that this is some of the best music I've ever encountered for my work. I mix this with a waterfall sound in the studio, and can paint for hours on end without loosing concentration or intensity. Incredibly peaceful, centering, and ethereal.
How can you not at least tribute this in the part 2 film? Hans Zimmer overeached with his music IMHO. This music nails the spirit of Dune. It's mysterious, sad, yet beautiful
I don't think Zimmer overreached, but I prefer the more subtle, ethereal motifs from this version. The Zimmer score jumps more forward into the film than this. I can appreciate them both. Even the Sci Fi series had some solid musical work.
Zimmer ain't as good as Jerry Goldsmith i only really liked the justice leaghue stuff and Intersteller but i don't think i ever found a goldsmith OST i didn't like most of. Elfman also good
Eno's music suits Lynch's imagery so well - Zimmer and Lynch isn't a combo that I think can work, they're both masters of their art but the substance they craft is just so very very different.
I saw Dune when it first came out in 1984. I was twelve years old and I remember the anticipation of waiting for weeks and weeks to actually see the movie. I was absolutely blown away by it and, along with Star Wars, it is the best sci-fi film ever made IMO. Every line of the script is etched into my memory. The universe that Lynch created in DUNE transports the viewer completely inside it from the opening lines and takes you on a beautiful journey. The performances are amazing. The music is perfect. I remember almost everybody else who saw the film complaining that they didn't understand it, and I still think that most people are too dumb to appreciate a film like this because it forces them to actually THINK about it, instead of spoon-feeding them a load of obvious, childish Harry Potter style garbage. Considering how dense the book is, I think that Lynch did an amazing job with the screenplay. I didn't have any issues trying to understand DUNE as a twelve year old, and I will always love the Lynch movie because it is beyond awesome. I guess that everyone else wanted to see Darth Vader and wookies instead of the deep masterpiece that DUNE 1984 truly is. I highly recommend that everybody who loves this movie should watch the edit made by Spicediver because he has done an incredible job. Massive love and respect to all intelligent people who "get" this movie. DUNE 1984 is OUR film and we don't give a toss if most people can't understand it, as long as we can retain it in our hearts. THE SLEEPER MUST AWAKEN!!!
I read the 'Dune' books before the films came out, my soundtrack to the books is Michael Oldfield's Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge. I would burn cinnamon incense and have the music playing while I spent time in the sietch and kept the hunter seeker in my room from finding me. it spurred my studies in advanced yoga. I love Dune.
There are MANY iconic, long-lasting lines of dialogue, images, melodies, and imagery from the 1984 Dune. The new movies tried hard, and do have some amazing moments, but I think none of them will really stand the test of time. Edit: I said images twice. I like images.
Never understand the hate this movie gets. As a kid watching this it was so different and so interesting in comparison to wars or trek. The music was a added bonus to what in my opinion is one of the great movies of the 80s. I'm really hoping the new version will take some of the elements that worked. From the director of Blade runner 2049 I can see no wrongs being done. Still....great movie by Lynch
Only it wasn't hated. It's (actual) science fiction and that's not something many can appreciate however the movie's cinematography, characters and soundtrack were well received and as we all know today this movie and the source obviously have a huge cult following, hence the remake. I personally don't think Villeneuve will go along David Lynch's line that's not what he does so expect the movie to be "different" but Villeneuve has never disappointed fiction fans and I'm sure with a story like Dune's we won't be.
I read Dune listening this and other Dune ambient themes. It is fantastic. Whenever I hear it again my composure changes and my mind becomes more still. What a story it is and what a movie by David Lynch. Thanks to the movie and its amazing soundtrack, I decided to read the books. Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune; each one goes deeper on different themes.
This movie is still my sh@! I watched every week from 1990 to 95. I wore the tape out. Then when I got to Afghanistan i had my mom send me the extended dvd. It was much better wondering what a a Sandworm attack on the airfield would look like. Then i started referring to the locals as Fremen.
My dad was a very big fan of DUNE when he was in his 20-30 (mom told me that when they met, he was reading one of those). When I was 9 or 10, he get the movie and we watched it. I have confused memories of that, it is more than 20 years now. I remember being either amazed and feeling weird... it is because Lynch artistical vision is quite "special" in this movie. It was a good memory, though, and I can say that Dune, either the movie and the novels, made a part of my culture. I am hoping Denis Villeneuve's movie for 2020, in order to see it with my dad.

For me personally, one of the most interesting scenes from the movie is that at the moment Paul successfully transmutates the spice (and becomes the Kwisatz Haderach) the movie then shows a couple of scenes in which several Bene Gesserit women get bloody noses. ALL OF THEM. At the same time. Every single Bene Gesserit, wherever she is in the known universe. They all know what just happened.

Ahh I haven't even read Dune yet. This will make for a most fitting ambience while I get through the book, before watching the 1984 film in preparation of the new release.
unfortunatelly I think you will be right. the "original" movie adaption is so iconic that there will be lots of stuff that will seem off to fans of the 80s movie.

It was. The soundtrack for the new Dune is so overpowering, and not in a good way. Some of the atmospheric pieces are really good, but any time the female vocals come back in, it's like the score is SCREAMING at you rather than complimenting the scene.
Awesome! I remember going to the cinema with my Dad to see this film during autumn 1984 in downtown Montreal. About 2 years later I bought the soundtrack at a music store at my favourite newest shopping centre in Montreal. How many of you are old enough as I am to remember 33 rpm vinyl records?
I always liked this very beautiful and misterious "Eno" piece of music ever since the "Dune" OST album came out back in 1984! so now that we have this beautiful "3-hour version" it really sounds almost as "heaven on earth"! to me! Therefore I really want to say: thanks a lot! for sharing such a beautiful music with us! 👍❤️
I love all the comments that quote both the movie and book... I've watched the move a zillion times, and I can picture the exact scenes and hear the voices in my head with perfect clarity. This music just solidifies that sensation.

Mark Kelso? I think I heard of you by reputation. Your work is awesome!

How can you not at least tribute this in the part 2 film? Hans Zimmer overeached with his music IMHO. This music nails the spirit of Dune. It's mysterious, sad, yet beautiful
I agree I like the older soundtrack much better than the new one
I love both. Art isn't a competition.
I don't think Zimmer overreached, but I prefer the more subtle, ethereal motifs from this version. The Zimmer score jumps more forward into the film than this. I can appreciate them both. Even the Sci Fi series had some solid musical work.
Zimmer ain't as good as Jerry Goldsmith
i only really liked the justice leaghue stuff and Intersteller but i don't think i ever found a goldsmith OST i didn't like most of. Elfman also good
Eno's music suits Lynch's imagery so well - Zimmer and Lynch isn't a combo that I think can work, they're both masters of their art but the substance they craft is just so very very different.
DUNE ...my favorite movie, almost know the script by heart, still to this day certain parts gives me chills...
When he rides the worm....
the prequels would make an amazing trilogy
This music sounds so sublime, deep, spiritual and profound

I read the 'Dune' books before the films came out, my soundtrack to the books is Michael Oldfield's Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge. I would burn cinnamon incense and have the music playing while I spent time in the sietch and kept the hunter seeker in my room from finding me. it spurred my studies in advanced yoga. I love Dune.
Thanks for the suggestions.
How odd, same ritual, I put this video / song and burn some incense as well when I read the Dune books
Cool scene. The room feels massive, everyone in there is low-key chanting "Muad'dib" - and when he raises his hand they all stop. Instantly.
Power. Terrifying and awesome.
Kino.
Love the soundtrack of the new Dune.
But THIS track is just so special and unique
There are MANY iconic, long-lasting lines of dialogue, images, melodies, and imagery from the 1984 Dune. The new movies tried hard, and do have some amazing moments, but I think none of them will really stand the test of time. Edit: I said images twice. I like images.
This soundtrack was beyond one of my favorites and got me into sci Fi as a child. Hands down!
Reads first 50 pages of dune to go to sleep, somehow gets recommended 7 dune videos even though my phone was in a different room

Father....Father...the sleeper has awakened.
Brian Eno and Toto did a very nice job with this soundtrack. Much like the movie, it is very underrated.
Seeing the navigators and the Harkkonen deparvity as a kid was pretty jarring.

It was. The soundtrack for the new Dune is so overpowering, and not in a good way. Some of the atmospheric pieces are really good, but any time the female vocals come back in, it's like the score is SCREAMING at you rather than complimenting the scene.
