    I was lucky enough to watch the 1986 World Cup live. He was one of the greatest players I’ve ever witnessed. Maybe the greatest of all time. Not only his brilliant dribbling, speed, and creativity, but his perfectly weighted shots from surprising positions. Those high, arcing shots over the goaltender, so deceptively lethal.

    • @SheevPalps868
      @SheevPalps868 Před rokem +1

      How would you say Messi compares to maradona, and what are the main differences between the two? I’m too young to have seen Maradona play so I’ve only got CZcams videos to go off and they seem almost identical in terms of their dribbling.

    • @ericfan9149
      @ericfan9149 Před rokem +14

      @@SheevPalps868 Messi is extraordinary, and would have to be considered in any conversation about the greatest of all time. As far as differences, it’s kind of hard to say who was better. On paper, Messi has the more impressive stats, but I’ve watched Messi play in every World Cup and he has had some underwhelming performances (I still have hopes for 2022). I feel like Maradona was able to almost single-handedly lift the entire team when he played, and Messi does that too but to a lesser extent at times. On Barcelona, Messi was surrounded by other superstars, so it’s not really a fair comparison. Although his play with them was always exceptional, he does seem to thrive with a cushion of superstar talent around him. Maradona, on the other hand, lifted Napoli to their first two championships, and they were not a dream team of superstars. You could still make a strong argument that Messi is the GOAT but it’s hard to compare players from different eras who were on very different teams.

    • @ericfan9149
      @ericfan9149 Před rokem +3

      @@SheevPalps868 I should add that Messi has always been one of my favourite players and it’s a joy to witness his incredible talent. This will probably be his last World Cup, so I have my fingers crossed for Argentina.

    • @iansmith5163
      @iansmith5163 Před rokem +4

      @@SheevPalps868 Very hard to compare from video clips. I suspect every minute of competitive football Messi played is available on video today. With Maradona there must be so many special moments, particularly at Boca, which are lost to us now. Still, you have seen enough of Maradona’s skills to make your own mind up.
      For me the difference between them is mainly to do with how football has developed in the past 30 years or so. At a superficial level this makes Messi look the better player.
      Messi was always treated like a racehorse; pampered, supported and running only on beautifully smooth surfaces. If Maradona was a horse he would also have had to pull carts, get whipped by his jockey and other jockeys and wasn’t well looked after by his owners.
      In the early 90s perhaps the best player in the world, Marco Van Basten, had his career ended by a horror tackle from a thug called Bolie I think. This seemed to change the game. Referees decided, or were instructed, to protect star players (then all players) from viciousness.
      By the time Messi was at his peak defenders, in Spain anyway, were barely allowed to touch him. This means that when you see one of his super dribbles you know that in 1985 the second tackle would have cut him in half. Diego’s strength and balance allowed him to weather many such tackles although he was usually kicked to pieces. Whenever he got injured the trainers pumped him full of cortisone and sent him out again, occasionally splitting open his knees to scrape it from his joints. So there was no way, even without his drug habits, that he was going to have as long a career as Messi has. I cannot imagine there has ever been a player fouled as much as Maradona was.
      Then in Maradona’s time top S American players (like Socrates, Zico etc.) had to prove themselves playing in and for their countries before they could get a big money move to Europe. When they got there they had to fit in with the way the team played. Messi was captured as a child by Barcelona who built a team around him. They had people to do his running, people to cover when he went roaming and people to win the ball for him.
      Maradona also went to Barcelona but in that era the English clubs were far better than them and he lacked the support of players like Iniesta etc. In later life Maradona did say that he wanted to go to Liverpool then but felt the troubles between the 2 countries precluded that. When he went to Naples, the second time he broke the world transfer fee record, he had to build an average team up from a low base.
      Then, technically, in Maradona’s time balls were heavy. They were made lighter to help long shots. For example in the 1980s I remember him, Platini, Zico and a few Germans were the only players in the world I knew who could bend a ball around a wall from a free kick. Now every team has one or two such players. That’s because of the balls not the players!
      Pitches in the 80s, as you’ll see from video clips, were usually free of drainage and undersoil heating which made it much harder to control your feet and the pace on the ball. It also encouraged further horror show tackles.
      So for me Diego was unquestionably the best player I have seen, although I never saw Pele, Mathews, Eusebio etc.

Not all psychopaths kill. That is a myth. Some traits are good. David James knows he is a psychopath. I remember him winning the FA Cup and being interviewed on the pitch. @@RiminiVirage he didn’t use drugs to make himself better, he used them to feel good or whatever. You’re telling me cocaine made him the greatest of all time? Or at least top 2 of all time beside pele 😂 ur a clown. Even Maradona even said in an interview if he hadn’t taken drugs then he would have been even better than he was
