- The NYPD debuted a new weapon in its war against parking violators, flashing a “windshield boot” for the first time. Also called a “Barnacle Device,” the boot is used to immobilize vehicles violating parking regulations. NBC New York's Marc Santia reports.

It’s not new, Philadelphia has used them for over a year, put your defrost on your windshield then crank the heat, it releases the suction cups. There are videos on how to remove them, good luck nypd 😂😂

Traffic agents used to be dressed in brown so that armed suspects won't mistake them for armed police officers. Someone got the bad idea of dressing unarmed traffic agents in similar uniforms to police officers causing a serious safety issue. The NYPD may claim that it provides omnipresence but it really stemmed from the NYPD changing to dark blue shirts and wanting to sell off the excess amount of left over light blue shirts they had in stock, corruption in the procurement process?
IT'S DISGRACEFUL. Ever since they dressed them in blue and SLAPPED an nypd label on them they have become more abusive of the citizens.

@@aklip I checked the statues in my area and as long as it is not hindering your view and the cracks are a certain amount of inches apart I'm good. It's just a long line that goes across the bottom and a few going up from the bottom passenger side. Now that will prevent me from getting a ticket but they use it as an excuse to pull me over all the time. They never give me a ticket thou. Surprisingly none of them have noticed I only have 1 windshield wiper. If it's raining and I see a car approaching and I think it's a cop Ill quickly turn it off so they don't notice until we pass by each other 😂.

Instead of a solution that helps people they come up with this? I know most people will not think this is a major thing but the system is so corrupt here they have to do everything they can to make money. You add this to the cameras they have all over, congestion pricing on the horizon and literally 2 ticket people to every block it really is becoming more stressful to live here everyday. These are the same people that made marijuana legal as to where you can’t walk down the street without smelling the smoke and inhaling cancer with my kid there with me. When you let the government get away with ideas like this it leads to why prices here have made it almost impossible to afford. Some may look at this story and laugh because the reporter says it looks like SpongeBob but this is truly no laughing matter. We need to organize and stand up against injustices

The scofflaw vans have been doing so many boots lately that they have not been taking the time to tighten them on the wheel so people have been able to drive off as if was never on.
Since i move out of ny in 2012 i don't know what tolls are..parking tickets...street cleaning tickets...ect... I even got a ticket once in ny for something missing or broken in the car....the car was new,, the ticket was $40 but why loose a days work to fight a ticket.. bunch of thieves.

This is an illusion. On my street are two cars more like two years not move. Two times a week is street cleaning and the car is not moving. I didn't see any ticket

A few years ago they tried this gizmo in a parking garage in Memphis. A couple students figured out how to defeat it within 24 hours. Haven’t seen one since. Congrats NYPD, you are living up to your reputation. 😅😂

You don’t have to scrape it. Turn on heat defrost for 15-20 minutes and the suction will loosen up and become easy to remove.
Very interesting yet clever idea to prevent parking violators from driving off with barnacle on their windshield. Can’t even afford to drive nor park in NY

anyone wanting to remove car windshield barnacles need only heat the glass from inside this will make the Barnacle to change its suction pressure, air molecules will release the suction system way before your windshield melting point, the colder is the average temperature the easier it will be and the hotter more difficult will be

An infrared heat source from inside the vehicle will heat the air in the suction cup through the windshield (and the suction cup) dramatically reducing the vacuum - then remove. Would be neat to try, and likely better than the defroster method.

Why are ANY "boots" required? People can't register their car/truck if they don't pay tickets already? And once you hit a certain amount, they tow your car? A damaged windshield will cost the city $500 plus ADAS alignment.

Maybe focus on arresting actual criminals. Just heard a story from NY today where a guy sucker punched an old woman, was released without having to pay bail and he then attacked a child. Was illegal as well. Thank god though we are tackling parking violations instead.

$185 for a PARKING VIOLATION is absolutely insane!! A red light camera ticket in Nassau County is $150. And that’s a MOVING VIOLATION. A parking ticket in Cedarhurst is usually $35. I get it, they need to enforce parking rules in an extremely congested city but $185 is too much!!
That red light ticket, that’s likely just the base fine. In California it costs three times that much with fees and charges.
