Great to see you like ZhanGuo as much as i do (that is one reason i really soak off all your videos as your taste meets mine in boardgames very often). I really liked it after my first play.
It may not be as heavy as Madeira but indeed counts as a heavy game. But a really good one - although it really can be a brain burner for a lot of people. You really have to love that part to play those games. It will definitly come back on the table.. but i have to play many other games from essen before playing it again.

Amazing game! Started first play through tonight. Thanks for this run through, otherwise I would have missed it. We totally missed an essential rule: court actions can be done with ANY card, but you need higher or lower to activate the cards in your tableau. We were always putting down high or low cards regardless. So much to think about, but pleasantly so. I will be watching 'what's your game?' from now on. Looking forward to Madeira next week! If you can recommend any other two player games like these: deep, easy set up, lots of choices, great replay ability, please let me know! I skipped Panamax as it seems to be better with more players. Will keep an eye on Nippon.

I LOVE games like this. Simple mechanisms + complex strategic decisions = amazing. Definitely want to pick up ZhanGuo when it comes to Canada. Thanks Rahdo!

Finished our first game. I got hammered. My wife scored 145, I had 96. She went for gov majority and scored 70 pts on that section and I got zero! This has been my only concern with the game: you cannot go for different area strategies/dominance and expect balance. I went for wall dominance (four walls in the best slots) and my wife ignored them completely. Gov control is THE scoring area for the entire board. You cannot ignore it. Just having one gov uncontested in an area is worth a whopping 12 pts. You can ignore walls, and even palaces. Once someone places a gov, you are automatically required to match them in that area or lose 12 pts. My wife is a bit annoyed by this as she calls it "now we have to chase each other around and do what the other is doing. I prefer games that let you go multiple routes for victory." Some reviews falsely describe this game as 'multiple paths to win with walls, gov, etc'. If you ignore Gov majority, you WILL lose. So, that has knocked her opinion of the game down. Her favorite is bora bora, precisely because it is open to different paths and doing your own thing. We will try it again, and I'm sure, it will be a closer score now that we know Governor scoring is crucial, but it's a bit disappointing that we absolutely MUST fight over that area or lose the game.

Myself and 2 friends played for the first time today and the final score spread between 1st and 3rd was 12 points (I believe I had 136 and 3rd had 124 with 2nd somewhere between. We all took different paths. I went for carding up regions and then building all my palaces. Dropped a wall and a few Governors, but other than that mostly ignored the end game scoring, 2nd place dropped Governors heavily in a couple territories while 3rd place went with a very heavy wall and project strategy and yet it was a close race at the end. Amazing experience

Explaining on the fly is fine for me. Jump right in as soon as possible after a rough overview and just explain as you go.

I was thinking this when at minute 12-13 he was still expaining things and not playing. I really miss the old runthrough style.

Great synopsis. We didn't have issues with gray vs white, but it is a valid "complaint". I like that this was one of the very few quibbles :)

For those interested: ZhanGuo is pronounced like "Jan Goo-uh", and it is the Chinese word for the "Warring States period" (475-221 B.C.). The game looks intensely rich in strategy... I'll have to check this one out.

We like the game aswel but it's a bit dry and heavy for my daughter and wife to realy like it. I did enjoy playing it and had fun playing the game. Looking forward to play it some more. And i think it's a game you have to play more to really appriciate it and have fun when your engine get's going.

I thought the run through was fine. This game (along with Madeira and Vinhos) would fall into my husband's "too complicated" category. He shuts down completely with games like this. The only other people we get to play with don't like anything heavier than Ticket to Ride or 7 Wonders, so I suspect this run through is sadly the closest I'll likely get to ever playing ZhanGuo. Looks great though.

Josh Smith As lovely as my area is, one of the real drawbacks of living in farmland Canada is no game group. I'd love to have more like-minded gamers to play with!

How to determine complexity of game: Sum the number of "but" and "then" uttered during Radho's final thoughts.

I think it would be fair to test the game again. Your mental capacity is also a resource if you opt for non brain burn options you will be more agile to tace tactical advantage during the game. With experience you can try to play the game more advanced. Next game maybe she will find the middleground so its still fun for here.

i rarely get a chance to go back and revisit games, because i'm always having to learn and plya new ones for the show, so i'm sorry to say, it hasn't hit the table again. but i'm holding on to it because i'm confident witha bit more time, she'll learn to love it like i do :)

I knew you were going to say Core Worlds, Rahdo. I remembered that playthrough and the comment about AP. I have problems with that one because it can be difficult counting all the stuff in your head when there are so many number changes in one hand. Having said that, it's my fav DBG that doesn't include a board.

This looks very unintuitive to play. I'll pass, glad you did the run-through so I could see the awkward game play.

Agreed. It just seems unnecessarily convoluted. And it seems like "work", not "fun".
