    Well, McCoy was a good friend of Kirk's, and not a line officer, and he most certainly wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind; all this made him a great balance for Kirk. Hell, somebody had to tell him the truth now and then...

      I used to like Star Wars a lot but when I decided to give the Original Series a chance because of the Kelvin Timeline, I immediately became a Trekkie. I wouldn't say a complete Trekkie since I haven't seen the Next Generation or the other spin offs since it is hard to connect with new characters when I love the original characters so much. Plus, the trio of Kirk, Spock and Bones is one of the best friendships I have seen.

    Headquarters assigning Kirk a female yeoman Was a strategic move. I Imagine a Male yeoman could not get Kirk to stop and eat, sign his paperwork on time, or change out of a ripped shirt after away missions. The yeoman of a Starship Is the engineer that keeps the most vital component of the starship functioning, the captain.

    If you watch the TOS episodes in production order instead of broadcast order, then this is McCoy's debut episode along with Uhura and Rand.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 Před 9 lety +7

      Andrew Chapman The broadcast order was near idiocy in that first season. Star Trek's debut was arguably one of its worst episodes, especially when "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was essentially written as character intro, and makes no sense at all airing after Corbomite, or Man Trap....
      I seem to recall Tremors: the Series doing the same thing. Wasn't a great series by any means, but we get introduced to Christopher Lloyd's character three episodes after we first see him in broadcast order. And then there's Firefly.....
      Y'know,... I think networks do that when they are intentionally trying to sabotage a show

    • @AndrewChapman
      @AndrewChapman Před 9 lety +3

      K1productions Hmm maybe, or maybe they broadcast episodes in such an order to establish the show and characters. Actually, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was indeed broadcast after "The Man Trap" but before "The Corbomite Maneuver".

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 Před 9 lety +4

      Andrew Chapman
      The Man Trap barely establishes the characters. It was little more than a "monster of the week" episode, and that is why the network chose it.

    I know this is not the first episode aired but it is the first shot. It’s actually my absolute favorite episode of TOS. Everyone in it is just so energized. (No pun intended 😉) and fresh. Kirk displays the brilliant, out of the box thinking that makes him the greatest Star Ship Captain ever, Uhura, without much seeming effort makes her formidable presence known (love her SO much) Spock has such a wonderful couple of moments that show both his competence as a first officer and his tender vulnerability. But for my money he best of all is Bones!! McCoy is a revaluation. He’s smart, funny, authoritative, caring and, well sexy! It’s so much fun to watch.

The Captain and the exec and three poor red-shirts leaving the ship all the time to go ashore and investigate some un-known planet. Every episode has something that would be its own chapter in How Not To Run A Starship.

    McCoy was wrong to ignore the red alert. He has no idea why it was on, obviously a red alert is pretty damn important! He should have told Kirk right off the bat while stopping the exercise at the same time so Kirk could attend the the emergency right way, the whole reason for a red alert! McCoy should have gotten some sort of punishment or at least a really good reprimand for that.

      The good Doctor knew, his philosophy is that a little suffering is good for the soul. The Captain always turned to snd had a close friendship relationship with the Doctor, and could open up about anything to him, and McCoy would understand and always give sound medicial advice that the Captain would accept and understand. You see, the show was designed and geared towards a young Captain, his first command of a starship, the Enterprise, a logicial non emotional first officer and a Doctor who helps determine this young Captain make the right calls and judgements in his command. And as stated before, the Captain can open up at anytime to the good Doctor, and the good Doctor was always there most of the time to support the Captain's judgements.
