There was nothing operatic here, but there was a classically trained voice. In opera singing, the head position is different, sounds are articulated differently and there are many differences. Even after the war, actors and singers had classically trained voices, you only need to watch musicals or musical films to see this... Nowadays there is a tendency to just sing, which is why a trained voice seems operatic to you. But yes, Dimash can also sing opera and he did it recently with Maestro Placido Domingo.

This version "Ikanaide" (行かないで) ) is the original, from 1989, composed by Koji Tamaki (famous Japanese singer, born in 1958) with lyrics by Goro Matsui. The version "Autumn Strong" (Late Autumn), sung in Chinese, uses the same song, but has another lyrics (Yaqui Cheung, from 1993) and another theme: It talks about the Japanese actress Yoshiko Yamagushi, very dear to the Chinese, who was deported when they discovered her Japanese origin (his real name was Li Xiang Lan and we're talking about World War II, where Japan was China's enemy) and never returned to China. In the original version, the lyrics are more intimate, sentimental and more recognized worldwide. It means: "Please don't go!". LOVE this song and this rendition of it! You should check out his other version of this song, except sung in Mandarin, called "Autumn Strong" - also beautiful. That classic Italian "opera sound" you discussed is called "bel canto". While Dimash is trained in this and many other styles, he doesn't use it all the time, but rather peppers it in his songs here and there. (With the exception of the song, "Ogni Pietra," [and possibly Ave Maria] where he sings in bel canto style throughout the whole song.) He could easily become a successful fulltime opera singer, but doesn't want to limit himself to one specific singing style.
Note that this is breath control at its finest. Also, Dimash pays complete to detail during all performances, on as well as off stage like here.
