Comedy is hard no excuse. It's not really "his level of humor" there are times where your comedy would not be effective if they don't know a shit about you, but there are those that are still effective even if they don't know about you. I think they did alright though.

he intentionally did that to set up a dynamic with the interviewiee's. why did cong do that? so that the interview can be more dynamic and not stale. you can see that ryan and hugh constantly laughed during said interview. he didnt do this for shits and giggles, he planned this character.
