  • I've been using Todd AO's Absentia DX for a few years and recently upgraded to 3.2. Here is how I use it, a quick overview of the tool, and if I think it's worth the money.

I love Absentia. Don't remember where I first learned about it, but it is absolutely amazing at those annoying hums and saves me time from manually doing it in RX, especially if there are multiple pitches going on.

Thanks for making a tool I use every day I edit dialog.

    Nice.
Just checked out their page and realized they went for a full subscription plan myself last night after watching your other work-through video.
Also felt a bit turned down but still gonna buy it when needed. Like Hum/Buzz/Cricket/Bird these kinds of things, it just produces less artificial than RX.
Looking forward to more review videos from you! Because of your practical perspective.
BTW, why are 13 points at the full score? haha

Thomas, amazing video. We went to a subscription model because we wanted to get new code to dialog editors and re-recording mixers ASAP. I thought it was bad for the community for us to wait for "enough" improvements to release a new upgraded ver$ion.
Cicadas Reducer is an example of a customer asking for help and our team coming up with a solution and releasing it right away. Our dialog detector is greatly improved and this will enhance the performance of Doppler Remover, which is currently underway. We have an ARA VST3 version available for testers, and M1 native coding is in progress. Right now we are preparing to release HR Smooth that gets the Hum under dialog. It will be a new preset.
I'd like your input on HR Smooth so we can avoid touching dialog. It hasn't been my experience in 98% of cases, but I would rather be absolutely certain and find out more. Please, if possible share some examples with us so we can improve our code.
Again, great video and thank you as the feedback helps to improve Absentia DX.

You guys are doing a great job with this tool. I am just a stingy dude so I will always gripe about paying money for things. Something I need to work on!

I'm curious about how you've came to a 13 point review system, haha! Thanks for another fantastic video on another great plugin.

thanks thom, you´re awsome!. maybe a tutorial using titan and fiel recorder workflow in protools. how to conform session in general.

Thanks for another video. Curious what you think of the latest Cicada Reducer in 3.2.3 It's interesting. Definitely reduces it though narrowing the range helps leave the rest of the file alone. Seems like a few lighter passes with Dialogue Isolate retains a bit more intelligibility, and of course isn't limited to just a solid range but does require more manual time. Also, thanks for showing your space a little bit! I've been wondering lately what mixing controller you use as I've been digging around looking at the Avid Mix Artist, Artist Control, and S1. I have a 2nd gen Faderport (1 fader) and it's been compact and helpful to get off the keyboard a bit. Cheers!

Hey buddy, thanks for the video! I was wondering how the JBL MKII behave using them in a 5.1 setup, Also, what sub are you using there? thanks in advance for your answer
Btw, keep doing these videos, they are so useful and fun to watch

I am using the LSR310s sub with 308 LCR and 305 LsRs. It is a great budget setup! For critical mixes I will predub on the JBL's and then take the mix to either a dub stage or movie theater to finish the mix in.

I'm with you. Kind of bummer that they moved to a subscription based model. I am still stuck on the older version, which I guess I'll keep for a while. Maybe I will add de-bird from boom library to compliment without having to subscribe to something indefinitely.
I don't have cedar and for some scenes that has whiny/buzzy lights with loud fans I find it useful to batch convert the production audio on quite conservative settings. Sometimes there can be a bit of a ring that it doesnt quite get and needs to be dialed out with fabfilter pro Q, but it gives a very good starting point for some tricky scenes (Especially tedious work to manually notch out all the harmonics if the fanspeed and buzz changes pitch over time as it often does based on shot).

    9/13 😂
This looks like a great plugin. Not a fan of subscription stuff, but might try it out for a month and see how it integrates into my workflow...fighting generators and high frequency hiss on the current project and izotope isn't quite cutting it, so this could be the answer. Appreciate the recommendation.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Waves Clarity in the future...it's been a game changer for me with fast turnarounds (also I don't have Cedar).

What is your opinion about Wave's Clarity?

  • @frankpaws
    @frankpaws Před rokem

Yeah, the cut in the dialog is almost non existent. I mean, how narrow the bandwidth is to what it is removing isn't any different than using a notch in Equality.
I mean, when the problem is there, it is there. I do think you have the ability to turn off bands. I've not found it to be so obtrusive it changes the dialog so much it becomes thin.
The whole point of re-recording is manipulating the sound. So it is going to happen one way or the other.
I find it more difficult when the dialog work is left up to the stage to solve. And it costs more too. RX doesn't always do the job and is often times worse.
You have to look at it this way. How much is solved, and how much needs a little EQ in the long run. I'd day 99 percent is solved over the 1 percent that might need a couple dB of bottom.
I mean, when you have an endless budget, you can do that. When you don't, you need to look for quick WORKING solutions that don't eat up your time.
There is efficiency and paid free time. They don't exist in the same space for the same project.
