    Dai Woodham was a businessman. I don't think preservation was really his ideology, rather that he realised the locos were more valuable if he could sell them whole rather than cut up and scrapped... There was a rule that said locos sent for scrap couldn't be sold onwards whole, so he had that rule rescinded, which probably unknowingly from his point of view kick started the preservation movement. But like I said though, I think Woodham was more motivated by profit than a desire to "save" these locos, but enthusiasts have him to thank for these locos still being around and running today.

    • @reluctantanorak
      @reluctantanorak Před 3 lety +1

      The initiative to allow scrap locos to be sold on by scrap merchants was started by railway preservationists, not by the scrap merchants, it was hoped to rescue locos from Barry as so few were left then

      In Dai Woodhams interview (on youtube), he stated that they were too busy cutting wagons for the locos to be cut up. It was just by chance the locos survived.

I also found the yard at Tebay and had a mooch around whilst I was spotting some Avanti pendos speed by.

      All Videos I make sure that my audience learns with a laugh 😂 and it's true entertainment or as I call it showbiz!
      Lot railway channels too serious and bit boring in some ways so with my natural Northern character and confidence In front of camera I've flip the normal railway Video on it's head. I've done some fantastic Videos what normally would be quite dull. Like I've just done lost other railways of Fleetwood what's interesting twist.

    Thanks. Driven past a few times over this weird year. Knew it was a 20, but can't see enough from the road to be sure it was a 9F. Though I did wonder if it was a late BR steamer 👍
    Used to get hauled by double headed 20s on the Nottingham to Skeggy summer trains as a kid. And occasionally saw hope Valley some trains with 4 of them. A 40 & 25 paired was more usual.
    Used to see lines of the things at Tinsley too, with a few peaks & 56s

    I remember the bankers that were kept at Tebay shed. I think it was Tebay (and not Oxenholme) but there were stories that monks were occasionally seen crossing the line and occasionally walking thtough the shed yard still retracing a path from an abbey to their monastic grange. I don't discount this as I had a quite serious friend who had a similar experience in North Somerset-they came through a hedge and crossed the road in front of him. When he related the experience he was told it was quite all right as people often saw them!

    I witnessed something pretty similar at a tiny PS site near, I think, Pontypool. The locos were just rusting away out in the open, no shroud, no cover, shed, nothing at all.
    Things have to be very bad when you scrape together enough money to buy a group of steam locos then funding runs out for anything else. Zero development, nothing doing. That’s very negative.

    Clearly there were some oddities with the numbering of the 9F class in that, while 92220 Evening Star was the last one built, the class numbering extended all the way up to 92250- indicating that the numbering was out of sequence with the build order

    I was going to make the point that it is the last but one loco built by British Railways. I did actually see it being assembled on an open day at Swindon Works - unbelievable waste of money building locos which should have been good for forty years and then scrapping them after four. Many thanks!

    • @hssmrg

      Just checked here: shedbashuk.blogspot.com/2015/10/swindon-works-1958-1960.html?m=1. My visit was 27 Sept 1959 when they were building 92213 to 92216, so they hadn’t quite got to 92219. Only time I ever saw steam locos being assembled though. Happy memories!

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast Před 2 lety

      It should probably be scrapped now though. It's in a terrible state and probably needs to be cut. There's little hope of restoration, it would cost 1 million. There's plenty of other 9Fs preserved so may as well get 30k for the scrap.

  • @olly5764
    @olly5764 Před 3 lety +2

    The biggest problem with 9Fs is they are hugely over powered for most preserved lines, and unlike the big passenger locos, they are banned from the national network. They were good locos though, intended for heavy freight but occasionally they were thrown on to passenger jobs where they proved to be very capable machines, one of which even rescuing the flying Scotsman (The train not the loco) in the Gateshead area.

    • @ThomasEdward
      @ThomasEdward  Před 3 lety

      Probably why don't see them on east lancs etc only prob couple good preserved lines you could run them properly. I don't honestly know too much about 9F I'm more 8f kinda guy tbh Thank you for dropping the comment much appreciated.

    The Woodhams didn’t preserve the locos at the yard for any other reason than that the huge numbers of wagons were more than enough to bring in the cash and quickly. The locos took a lot longer to demolish so it made more sense to work on the wagons and so the locos were left and so that worked by accident for the hit from the preservation societies a few years later
