  • This is my process for cleaning Technics 1200 platters, not a definitive method, still developing ways to get a full mirror finish . Open to suggestions. - Recommended only for extremely oxidised and pitted platters - i recommend trying Autosol first (as directed on the can ) on the upper, outer and under edge of the platter before taking to it with a high speed tool, its amazing what that stuff can do, best to try and preserve the OM factory finish.

    great job! i would be scared to sand the platter because you take the material of, so the platter is lighter than. But at the end of video i can see that the dots are still , meaning it works fine.

    Great video! I have discovered the same things as you have:
    toothpaste and other polishing chemicals like Brasso will damage the black paint between the pitch dots.
    Your way is definitely the best. Clean it gently and use the dremmel carefully.
    One suggestion would be to use an old turntable to place the platter on so that you can smoothly spin the platter as you use the Dremmel. That may give a cleaner appearance in the end but again. . . Great video!

    Any kind of soft polish liquid, not like brasso, something flat (I used a 9v battery) and a delicate rag (like those to clean eye glases). Wrap the battery with the rag. Keep it well stretched all the time. Put not too much polish and keep it FLAT, pls, to dots. Very gentle. Do it slow. Take your time. You don't need to use sand paper. You can do a big mess in the black zone. Never, I say never use power tools.

So i just popped it on the 1210 to demonstrate the calibration lamp on the clean dots.

    The very fine machined grooves in the platter remain after this process?
    I'm wondering since you mentioned mirror finish. My platters are pitted for real !

    • @squarepeg303
      @squarepeg303  Před 7 lety

      The 280 grit definitely leaves a duller, somewhat scored surface.. if dremel or another company made a bit that was equivalent to 1200 grit, i would use that second. the second cut in the video with alloy cutting compound removes most of the "very fine machined" scoring. cut 3. Autosol buffs the finish up super nice and clean, but it is duller than OM finish, so yes, you end up with a more machined finish rather than the original mirror. i recommend trying Autosol first (as directed on the can ) on the upper, outer and under edge of the platter before taking to it with a high speed tool, its amazing what that stuff can do, best to try and retain the super high polished OM finish if you can.. if your platter is really old, the dots will be more stubborn. i take the surface of the dots back to clean alloy with the dremel, duller dots, but clean dots look nice standing still and are clear and readable under strobe.

    • @Hi-Tech-Ray
      @Hi-Tech-Ray Před 7 lety

      Great Video Dude! Question, if my dots are not dirty to that extreme, then I should just start off with Autosol as you said in the description? Also can I just use Autosol lightly and periodically as maintenance?

    • @squarepeg303
      @squarepeg303  Před 7 lety

      Hi mate, absolutely.. always try autosol first, Autosol tends to work to a lesser degree on the dots, but if your dots are only tarnished a little, Autosol will work a treat.. Before any Autosol treatment, i always give the platter a gentle clean with soap and warm water first, just to lift the dirt and finger funk out. Its difficult not to get polish on the black paint, just try not to rub it into the paint too much, its pretty abrasive stuff, vigorous rubbing into the paint will take the gloss off the surface and makes the paint duller and less durable. i always wash platters with soap, warm water and soft bristle brush after a autosol treatment just to be sure all the residual chalky dry polish is removed from between the dots. The dirt, salt and oils from your hands is the enemy, i suggest maintaining your now super shmick platter, with either a damp cloth or a cloth damped with Isopropyl alcohol, Windex window cleaner also works well, just avoid the cheaper stuff with ammonia in it.. keep that up and you may never need to Autosol again, while your at it.. give the plinth a wipe, paying particular attention to painted areas where you your rest your hands.

    • @Hi-Tech-Ray
      @Hi-Tech-Ray Před 7 lety

      Thanks mate, I bought my 1200 pair used and the plinths were so badly stained that I sent them out to be repainted over buying brand new plinths to a guy in Canada who services 1200s. He explained to me that repainting them was a better option with the 3 or 4 step paint as to where the final paint is like a gloss finished opposed to the matte finish on the OEM replacements where as the matte finish stains. Now with a glossy type finish, sweat and oil from your hands beads up on the surface! I wish there was a way to apply a protective clear coat on the dots! BTW here's a heads up they make a "11pc Woolen Mounted Felt Set Polishing Points Buffers Shank 1/8" for Dremel" which I got on ebay.

    • @squarepeg303
      @squarepeg303  Před 7 lety

      nice.. 2pac is the way to go for sure, did you get the decals printed ? thanks for the tip, i did try a lot of the woolen and cotton polishing sets, i found the self tap screw in type mount on the 1/8 shank pretty unreliable, its a shame there isnt a polishing wheel with a larger diameter fitted with the patented spring loaded chuck.. having said that, the flapped emery cloth wheel is great for really stubborn dot surface, i just wear the grit down a little on a cement brick or similar surface

    Wet sandpaper may do the job as long as you have rubber backing on it. You could start with a 400 grit and finish with a 1500 and the result would have been great.

    • @squarepeg303
      @squarepeg303  Před 7 lety +1

      yep, wet and dry sandpaper works well if the grit grade is staggered like you mention and like you said, a sanding block is necessary for a nice even finish and to preserve the black paint between the dots, i have used cork in the past.. with a final polish with a fine cutting cream like Autosol, i get pretty much exactly the same results as i did above, it just takes significantly longer, but definitely worth it.

    So unnecessary.Everybody is going this the hard way. All of this is unnecessary. Just get Mothers mag and aluminum polish. You can get a beautiful shine in 5 to 10 minutes with just a few paper towels. This is made for engine parts and mag wheels. If the platter is bad you may have to do it twice. This is real easy with little polishing. Mother's is sold at Walmart and auto supply stores for $5.00. Of course it will not take out bad scratches. My Thorens platter looked grey and shined in 10 minutes

    This is the worst method - do NOT do this.
    Using an abrasive will take a layer of metal off the dots - you’ll be left with an uneven finish and terrible wow and flutter because of the uneven grinding. Never do this - use a simple degreaser like dish soap or laundry soap. Never use an a power tool on a finely balanced thing such as a technics platter

  • @len9518
    @len9518 Před 3 lety +2

    I highly recommend, NOT doing this. Everything here is an abrasive, and as a result, removes material by abrasion. It would be impossible to be sure that you remove the same amount of material, all the way around. This can easily result in an imbalance, which could cause an increase in wow and flutter. Also consider the fact that the platter is designed to have the exact weight, to interact with the motor, and by removing material, you will be lightening the platter, which could easily cause the platter to try to spin more rapidly, although you can compensate for this, with the speed adjust control, if your table is servo speed controlled. If quartz speed controlled, this may slightly stress the speed control.
