  • "Someone who has 500 friends, has no friends." An interview with the Nobel Prize winning author Günter Grass on Facebook, computers and the internet.
    Writer Günter Grass on why he prefers remaining off line, working the old fashioned way: "Literature for example -- you can't speed it up, when you work with it. If you do, you do so at the expense of quality." Grass also explains how direct experiences and direct contact cannot be replaced by virtual stuff, however appealing it may be.
    Günter Wilhelm Grass (b.1927) is a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor, best known for his first novel The Tin Drum (1959). He is widely regarded as Germany's most famous living writer. In 1999 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

    The day will come eventually in the future when people realize we are turning more and more dummy and brainless because of the speedy-handy-easy going computer oriented life. In this regard, Gunter Grass is a prophet.

      ***** never too late to give it up and walk away, social media is a chain to never ending self judgement and self doubt, and the sad thing is everyones addicted and becoming effected by it, some more than others but i can see mental health issues rising worldwide the further it continues, which is very unnecessary if you ask me! facebook and social media is like have a double life or split personality, when you leave facebook you leave behind all the stress, worry, anxiety and judgments behind leaving you to go back to just focusing on whats in front of you in realtime, you will become a calmer and happier person!

      ***** lol i was waiting for that, yes well i regard youtube differently to social media, i know its on the same level but there are differences with you tube, sure too much youtube isnt healthy either, but with youtube you can be anonymous etc so its world social not like with facebook etc where your under pressure from viewing eyes of people you know, you dont have to make comments on you tube but facebook puts pressure on you to say something or post pics etc,and youtube in my opinion give you the freedom to view interesting videos/film/music its more about stuff other than personal identity, you dont have to keep up with the joneses on youtube, and you can also speak your mind freely without thinking a family member or aunty or ex is judging your comments etc, ive given up everything except YT , maybe ill try someday but for now i find youtube a handy and useful tool , facebook was just a stress creator!

    It's not correct. There are garbage content on internet but at the same time reliable things are also there. There should be application of intellect for that...

  • @radu1337

    Günter is good at what he does, not social media. It's true that Facebook propagates not so valuable culture, but that's really our fault, not the platforms. In Romania we used Facebook to successfully down two governments and what would have been the biggest gold mining project in Europe.
    It works better than anything else for that.

    • @toothlesscrocodile1355
      @toothlesscrocodile1355 Před 4 lety

      Yes, facebook and possibly twitter also brought down Mubarak in Egypt. People always use the means at hand, whatever is practical. In fascist China, where censorship cuts people off from most non-Chinese media, social networks are mere instruments of state control. When you cross a red light (even when no car is in sight), you are registered and your photo is shown on a monitor visible to people in the streets. As somebody said, these tyrants have used George Orwell's 1984 as a manual to put into practice, not as a deterrent. Grass would have been appalled by these developments.

      ich meinte wahrscheinlich, dass das, was emotional wirklich, was an Gefühlen wirkt, nicht unterdrückt werden, sondern seelisch gefasst und gelebt werden muss. Würd ich bestimmt nicht so ausdrücken am heutigen Tage.
      Facebook ist für politische Tätigkeit dann unnütz, wenn man es nicht zu nützen weiß. Ich kenne da viele, die sich gesellschaftspolitisch engagieren. Wenn deine Haltung gegenüber Anregungen aus Facebook eine negative ist, ziehen dich Kreise, die Facebook gehaltvoll beleben, klarerweise nicht an..

    • @RonaldKethers

      Ich habe bisher keinen einzigen Nachweis dafür erbracht gesehen, dass eine Facebookpräsenz Wählerstimmen generiert. Das mag zwar vielleicht im kleinen kommunalen Bereich hier und da passieren, aber wenn es um die Wurst geht, halte ich politische Arbeit in sozialen Netzwerken eigentlich schon eher für ganz schön riskant.

      Oana C Grass is absolutely right. Facebook pollutes the minds and occupies a great deal of space in your brain that could be used for much better things. Facebook is the great illusion of a social environment that does not exist. It is a virtual, surrogate society which provides you with the illusion that you are surrounded by friends, but you aren't. It may be useful in some individual cases, but in general it damages human social capacities.
