Why the New England Patriots paired Joe Milton with Drake Maye | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc - Sport
I think it’s a great idea. If you draft a QB in the first round why not grab someone in the later rounds that has potential??
and it gives you somebody to compare progress with
Definitely. They don’t know for sure if Maye will work out or not. Why not develop another late round guy too that has talent and potential. Some teams have been looking for their franchise QB for decades, you need to keep taking shots until you have that guy.
@@pete6705 yeah, it might be a Trey Lance / Brock Purdy situation
Because if Drake see playing time this year, struggles & gets hurt, & your next option is a project Qb who’s still learning how to be consistent. You wont win many games.
@@thelifeofb8319 Those two arent the only QBs on the team...
Forget about competition. It's football. Anyone could get hurt at any time. It's protection. It's adding value. It's an asset down the road. It's an asset now. Brisset, Maye & Milton. There's your room. Maybe Zappe gets flipped for a late round pick or gets released. QBS have such high value now why not protect yourself at these prices. I love it!!!! Welcome Joe. I hope they create a role for you.
'Bazooka Joe' , welcome to the New England Patriots. ✌️😎
I’m just ecstatic my team had fun QBs to play with in madden again. The happiness I have inside is beyond words
They both hit my minimum qualifier of 90 throw power so that's nice. Haha.
I would keep Milton, brissette, and maye obviously Brissette a great teacher and mentor
Yes. Milton will need to compete. Could be interesting.
@@oldernu1250we still have zappe to so it brings in a ton of competition
For 2024, Brissett and Maye will compete to be QB1, with the other as the backup. Milton, Zappe, and Rourke will battle for QB3. I agree they probably keep Milton along with Maye and Brissett, with Zappe getting cut and Rourke on the practice squad.
Yup
Joe Milton is good. Glad he got picked where he can sit and study. He will surprise people.
He's in purgatory with the Patriots for the next few years at least.
Vols fan here. He had years to develop in college. Never developed. Don't hold your breath.
Nah..Joe Milton studying behind Stafford in LA...or Tua in Miami under Coach Mc Daniels..Would have been better spots for him
@@SenorJuan2023 really he had really good numbers I hardly saw him play but I watched him throwing at combine an he's got a cannon. He's got all the tools, im sure he's got many issues given his draft spot
@@ryancox7155 He had plenty of time to develop and it never happened.
I really hope and pray that Joe Milton actually competes and get the starting job, because I am excited about this guy..
What you arent excited about Drake Maye the 3rd overall pick? Joe Milton had 6 years to develop in college and didnt. Drake was only in college for 2 years so him needing to work on his mechanics is excusable. But Joe not fixing his in 6 full years shows that either hes not capable of fixing his mechanics or that hes not a hard worker.
@@britneyystaples91 Because hes black and it's normal to be bias towards your own race
We went from not having a QB room to having depth, future potential and a mentor 💯 Count your days Zappe
Zappe Got Cut And Signed Back, He Not Counting Days 😂
Milton was drafted to replace Zappe and also replace Brissett when his 1 year deal is up after the season. He will be a decent backup and maybe a potential starter on another team.
It’s Brady/Garoppolo all over again. Haha
Nah Milton was the steal of this draft. He will be a face of a franchise I just hope NE keeps Kobi for 2 years and then let Milton take iver
Facts
.. assuming Maye is gonna be the starter.
Too many top drafted QBs didn't meet expectations in the last couple of years.
.. assuming Maye is gonna be the starter.
Too many top drafted QBs didn't meet expectations in the last couple of years.
Perhaps Joe Milton will be the practice squad guy that trains their new WR`s for their Bombs Away passing game of the future. Go.Pats,Go!
If drake is competitive at all, trying to match Milton’s arm talent is gonna make his even better
You have growth mindset sir
I like the pick. If there is any kind of potential there, then it’s worth a shot. And it looks like there is potential.
Until the Pats are sure that they have their franchise guy, they need to keep as many options as possible open
Milton had years to develop in college. Never happened.
@@SenorJuan2023 he’s still young, you never know. It’s probably a very low chance that he can get to NFL starter level, but for a team that’s starting from scratch at the QB position, I think it’s worth using a 6th round pick to take a chance on a guy. At least they know he has the arm strength
@@pete6705 Arm strength doesn't matter when you can't throw accurately.
Why would qb Joe Milton arm ever move position is sick evn hearing Joe Milton start in nfl Tennessee had no wr its system Qb go to Joe Milton been Great fit on Dolphins
@@breonmitchell2443 No, he needs to be a Taysom Hill like player or TE. If he had talent at QB, we would have seen it in 6 years of college ball. Or he could be arrogant and refuse to do that and be out of the league in a couple of years.
Fab Five got me into collecting Basketball cards. Weber was so HUGE going into the NBA
What did Maye do to Simms for him to be so blind about him??
Simms is Horrible. He also thought MHJ is the 3rd best WR. 😂
Got drafted by the patriots. Simms never says anything good about the patriots
@@Balln_The1andOnlyway to push an agenda.. Simms said wayyy before the draft that Maye is a project and needs work. It has nothing to do with the Patriots. If the Commanders or Vikings or Broncos had drafted him he would’ve said the same thing. So stop it!!
Watch Maye tape especially the Kurt Warner Confidential. Would you say Kurt has credit to evaluate a QB? Listen to what he said about Maye and also listen to Belichick or he’ll Mayo before the draft and you will see a pattern.
@@gamadahussein6663MHJr is definitely not better than Nabers. Now Brian Thomas Jr might be a long shot but Simms said "I would bet on special athlete basically a freak that’s raw who can be coached than a "safe pick".
Can't wait to see this preseason
WHEN PATRIOTS DEVELOP JOE SOMEDAY HIS GONNA BE SCARY QB IN NFL. SPECIALLY HE RUN SO FAST TOO! MAYBE HIS THE MOST STRONGEST ARM IN NFL IN HISTORY!
Maye is better and a strong arm too
Milton is a bust. If he had any talent, he would have easily won the Heisman.
@@SenorJuan2023🤣🤣🤣🤣want me to list hundreds of quarterbacks with talents who never won the Heisman?
@@brandonhilton2730 Totally irrelevant Only one person can win it a year. Re read my comment again. Guess you don't understand his physical traits are off the charts. That's why I said he would EASILY win the Heisman if he had any talent. He doesn't. Still only average, Not accurate.
Joe Milton needs a 100 throw power on Madden
will the 2 qb's picked above maye start this year.
There's a reason Milton lasted until the 6th round and some are talking about him switching positions....
I wish Milton was drafted by an offensive coach😂. Imagine Joe Milton getting coached by McVay.
I really was hoping that he would get drafted by either the Rams or the Browns. I’m actually saddened by that selection, because his career is done. First of all, he’s not going to get good coaching or support, second of all the team has the guy that they’re going to give all the opportunities ahead of him, Drake Maye… It’s so ridiculous and I feel bad for the guy.
Milton had years to develop in college. Never happened. He's just not good enough.
@@romain8390 Milton never had a chance. He's average at best, despite great physical skills.
@@SenorJuan2023 you’re not wrong… what he would have needed was a team that sat him for two maybe three years and actually committed to him… Specifically a team with an offensive coach and good culture.
I agree, though that he was not very good, especially in College, and him being an NFL successful quarterback, would be darn near unprecedented. I don’t think he did himself any favors by going to Tennessee, a place I didn’t actually ask him to use a lot of quarterback skills on offense, rather just throwing simple routes on simple concepts to receivers rather than reading a whole Defense.. so he never really could develop.
@@SenorJuan2023 Yeah Tennessee is known for developing QBs🙄. He had a bad staff at Tennessee. We don't know what he can be.
If Drake was drafted by the Bears or Vikings, he would be the best QB in this draft, no question.
Ya he really went to an offense that's in shambles. Hopefully he plays at least solid as a rookie starter so that way they will feel the need to build around him. Because if he doesn't play good (which he's in a terrible position) they're gonna turn on him quickly
@@thewheyoflife3548why wouldn't we feel the need to draft around him. We threw out our entire way we draft usually and you're still talking about the Bill era after we drafted literally all but one offensive picks. Obviously the team is trying to fix that side of the ball and you're just talking
And he still could with the help the Patriots gave him on offense in the draft.
@@thewheyoflife3548In shambles but yet they're trying to fix it by having an offensive heavy draft.
No he wouldn’t. Maye has issues. Go look at his highlights. His best highlights don’t “wow” you. Look at the other top 2 QBs and Penix highlights and you’ll see “wow” The media hyped Maye. Hopefully he’ll be good after sitting a year.
O'Connel and Dabol love Maye but Simms does not. I will go with Dabol and O'Connel
Milton couldn’t develop with harbaugh and he’s considered a qb guru
it's like the RGIII, Kirk Cousins draft in reverse.
What about that cahoon guy? I heard a few people mention his name during the process
Reminds me of WAS (rg3 & KC)
People are somewhat forgetting that Brissett is QB1, and he’s actually a really good QB. We may not win another championship for a few more years, but we will be competitive again as soon as mid season. Maye and Milton can get some snaps in the pre season to get some reps in, then it can be Brissett and Zappe for a bit. I don’t care for Zappe much, but I feel he doesn’t have the rookie jitters at least and is more seasoned. He’s still got to make himself somewhat marketable when Mayo wants to trade him, so with some good coaching, he could improve.
My fav thing is watching older people not understanding memes
Joe Milton is a couple years older. He played a lot of college football. He did not show the ability to substantially take steps forward in college. That is the big drawback. Pretty sure the patriots drafted him as a back up. They want to reset the room and they got bigger arms, and tougher players.
Joe Milton same age Joe burrow was as rookie Believe Joe Milton drop draft made 0 sense arm talent alone he be 2nd round pick he went in 6 round he throw like that
The Fab 5 Laettner thing might be due to the Maye’s being largely UNC guys, and Laettner’s one of the biggest Duke villains of all time
Talk about missing the forest for the trees...Their family's ties to UNC are so strong, it's obvious that they know about Duke history - even if it WAS from before they were born.
I like joe Milton arm strength but the things Drake maye can do on the move when the play breaks down is “special” my guess is we’re grooming him to be QB2 once brisset leaves then trade him for a 2nd
I basically disowned the Giants after the 6th round when they didn’t take Milton.
My golf club head covers are off. It’s going to take something special to get me back. That was blatantly keeping the 👎🏾 streak going.
Bill had to keep Brady because he played well in the preseason in 00. They kept 4 on active roster. Gut says Milton will be battling Zappe for qb3 and be developmental and maybe after 2 years they trade him for a day 2 pick or seriously look at him. Van Pelt is a good QB developer.
Zappe will go to scout team, clearing waivers. Milton will be the QB2 next year. Pretty clever.
@@oldernu1250 The reason he stayed here last year after they cut him was because it was the best path to winning a starting job. With them drafting Drake, that's no longer in play, so I'd expect him to join another team's practice squad that doesn't have an answer for the future at the position - Giants, Cowboys (if they don't extend Dak), Raiders, Seahawks?
Milton is Mayo's guy. They both got that University of Tennessee connection.
Milton needs to switch to TE or Taysom Hill role. He can't cut as QB.
@@SenorJuan2023your drunk
@@DeanthonyGarrett You clearly didn't see Milton play at UT. Average at best despite a cannon of an arm and being a great runner. Would have won the Heisman if he had any talent. SMH
Some guys need time some guys don’t never rush the process
@@gnoosky5361 He had five or six years in college. SMH
Joe Milton is phenomenal add for camp and scout team. Dude can make any throw. Besides, Lance went 3rd and Purdy was taken in the same draft. RG3/Kirk Cousins...
Use Milton as trade bait to get a few good players in return. They already have 5 QBs on the roster
If Joe Milton works at his accuracy with athletic ability would be sick
I think Milton will end up transitioning to be a tight end/receiver. I don’t even think they will do special QB plays like they do with hill in New Orleans. Edelman was a quarterback, turned into one of the best receivers. Yes, they are different sizes, but still same situation.
Let's say Maye gets injured very late in the season. Last 2 games. Milton wins those games. His stock just went up existentially. If Maye still is your #1 QB, then you can Trade Milton for a very high Draft number. Late First round. Or early Second.
Let's face it. The only difference between Joe Milton (6th round) and Anthony Richardson (1st round) is Milton is 24 with 21 college starts while Richardson was 21 with 8 college starts. Big, athletic college QBs should take note and enter the draft as early as they possibly can.
Milton had years to develop and still average at best.
No that is not the difference Milton Lost his job at Michigan... transferd and lost his job in Tennessee.....
@@jbjorkman09 Couldn't start until his sixth year despite having huge advantages physically. That's a red flag.
@SenorJuan2023 that is my point. If Milton had come out after his first year the NFL would have drafted him higher based on his POTENTIAL rather than his subsequent disappointing performance.
I like that Coach Mayo will continue the "earn it" philosophy for the Pats. Drafting 2 QBs makes perfect sense if you're willing to step outside the "box" of conventional strategy. A high pick doesn't guarantee high performance. When high draft picks made huge money to sign, it was difficult for teams to properly select and evaluate talent. Financial pressure made it hard to justify game reps for undrafted talent. For the team, the draft is as important, but better for pure evaluation because the initial financial pressure is removed. For the fans, the draft is fun, exciting, and hopeful, but ultimately tells little about how any team will perform going forward. We all should know that it NEVER matters where or if players are drafted. What matters is what happens when players step on the practice field and battlefield. Congrats to the drafted and free agents who get a shot. As a native Pats fan, I welcome both QBs and ALL players who get an opportunity to PROVE IT!
Joe gon take that spot
Zappe is definitely gone. Jacoby , Maye , and Milton are the 3 qb's on the roster. I like the Milton pick. Bro is athletic and has a cannon of an arm
Good, cause Zappe is TERRIBLE
He is a great pick to throw Hail Mary passes from the your own 20 before the half or at the end of the game. That’s it. He will make mistakes that a high score freshman wouldn’t. Like throwing the ball away or running out of bounds on 4th down.
Out of the top 2 QBs and Penix u get “wow” highlights. You can’t find a highlight reel and see Drake Maye having more “wows” than not.
Bailey Zappe is gone. That’s what the Milton pick tells me
Reminds me of RG3 and Cousins but I dont get the pick its very possible your 6 rd pick could look better than your 6th pick in camp why do that to your 6th pick because Milton isnt a regular 6th rd pick
They are definitely releasing Zappe, who sucks!!!!!!
Chris is clearly upset the Maye has not fallen to his giants
Do you think Chris was down on Maye publicly so he would slide to Giants at 6?
Patriots pls take care of Joe pls 🧡🤍
and why not sit a qb for a year. in most cases when they let them get up to speed it's always worked in their favor.
Them not getting that the “fab 5” bit was definitely taken from the loiter squad parody instead of that is so boomer of them
If the route calls for Joe Milton to throw a 70 yard pass, he got 70 yards. If the play calls for 10 yards, Joe got 70 yards. Great potential but accuracy is a rough one in college let alone in the nfl.
lol guys we know about the fab 5 bit from memes
Was hoping the Giants might pick up Milton
I wouldn't be surprised if Milton, becomes the starter. This dude is potential up the wazoo. Looks dangerous and intimidating.
Don’t get ur hopes up. Milton is not good
He had potential for years while in college. Never happened.
0% chance. Milton needs a ton of work
Bro there is a reason they took Maye @3 they did not take milton to be the starter stop clowing
@@jbjorkman09same reason they didn’t take Brady …. You just never know
This is why Colin says he hates defensive coaches
Did anyone else hear simms say fuck drake between 4:29 and 4:31? Or am I tripping?
I head the same thing lol 😅
Yo, he sure did. Now they're putting subliminal messages in to hate on Drake Maye lol
"good luck" Drake
I'm not saying he can't be a late bloomer, but he's three years older than Maye already, played 5 or 6 years in college and couldn't win a starting job until his final year. Maybe that says more about the other QBs he was competing with for those starting jobs, but given that he STILL has accuracy issues after all those years in college, I'm not as excited about this pick as most are.
Make them compete for the starting job!!No more I'm special I deserve it being handed to me
is it competition when u have needs AT ANOTHER position more than QB?
What if drake or joe is the kind of quarterback that Thornton needs to get him the ball down the field since Mac arm wasn’t as strong as them
If you watch Milton's Pro day - he missed behind his receivers on just about every mid-range throw, forcing the receivers to slow up. And that's with no defense chasing him. If he can improve his accuracy and learn the position, he's got great physical gifts. His skills at this time are limited. He's a long term project.
Pats may suck this year and next year and the next but at least they got some arms who can launch it to put some awes out there
I would keep Jacob zappe and milton
Of Drake Maye becomes a Elite QB....people will hush up
Someone’s gonna get desperate and give us a 2nd for Milton next year can’t wait
The ravens
Okay stop, guys. First off, Milton was a 6th round pick for a reason. Second, the ONLY reason they drafted Milton was because Brissett is on a one-year deal, Zappe has done nothing, and Rourke is a practice squad guy. You take a guy with traits like Milton's in the hopes he can become your long-term backup. That's it...nothing else to see here.
These 2 kinda sound like dopes but I don't watch them enough to know if this is normal or a 1 off lol
They had 3 other QBs at the time they drafted Milton. The upside is you do a little development and you trade him for a 3rd round pick. The downside is you wasted a pick and risk the creation of a QB controversy and neither of you rookies develop- great!
If I’m Joe Milton I’m upset rn …could have went to a better situation with a better offense , & possibly played sooner. Miami or Vegas are examples.
the Irish dudes in Boston are crying that this will cause a rift that'll tear the team apart. I swear..... Milton, if you're reading this. don't accept an extension if they offer you one.
Look where Brady got drafted so there is diamonds in the rough
Can't remember the last time I disagreed with Chris this strongly. Chris, it is about EVALUATION and CEILING. If it were about finished products, QBs would be drafted MUCH differently. This isn't new BTW.
Wow! Sims really dislikes Drake Maye. I heard a QB coach on Pat McAfee’s show that worked with Brady, Manning and Luck. He’s some sort of adviser at UNC, and he absolutely loves Maye and thinks he’s going to be a star! I hope he’s right and Simms is wrong.
Wow they HATE Drake Maye
Joe Milton has the strongest arm
We could have used another RB. Milton is probably on the practice. Why not draft a RB like Dylan Laube?
Write this season off if Jacoby Brissett is your QB. This is his 6th or 7th team. If he was worth a damn he would have shown his worth somewhere along the line.
The fact that the Pats have him back just further underscores how badly Bill Belichick drafted for years and years. What Belichick did to Mac Jones should be a chargeable, criminal offense.
Simms clearly has it out for Maye lol. Dude should have went undrafted according to Simms. I really hope this dude shuts him up
It's a pretty sure bet that Zappy and that other guy will not make the team.
Hopefully Maye will not fold in the pressure of training camp like he did on his pro day. If he can't handle Brissett and Milton breathing down his neck, what can he handle? All the other QB's are gone, they will never make training camp.
Bills should’ve drafted Joe Milton
Nathan Rourke is the best of all 5
So we have two raw qbs lets just cross our fingers 😅
I seen this movie b4 in Washington. The second guy signs a $180 million contract. The other guy tells jokes.
Milton has to learn to read a defense. Idc if you can throw the ball 1000 yards. If you cant identify a blitz, man or zone pre and post snap, you don't stand a chance
Let Magic Milton cook
Drake Is the # 1 lol
Teams tried to trade up for Maye but not for Daniels, that should tell you all that you need to know
The Raiders would’ve tried to trade up for Daniels if they could - because of his relationship with Antonio Pierce.
That could just be smoke, even so that isn’t because of his talent
If you think no teams tried to trade up for Daniels...haha, probably the Pats themselves. We'll see. Without question LV bare minimum must've tried to get #2.
This is a dumb take. Everyone knew they couldn't get Daniels because why would Washington give up a player like that. Pats were on the fence to draft maye or not because taking him wasn't a no brainer for them and one other team, the vikings, liked maye in that spot
Can't stand how Chris Simms talks.
Thank you Mac Jones for this pick!!!
If you need 70 yards, Joe Milton can throw it 70 yards
If you need 20 yards, Joe Milton can throw it 70 yeads 😂
You can NOT compare Penix drafted by Atlanta at 8 (projected late 1st) to Maye drafted by the patriots at 3 (projected at 3 and the 5th or 6th ranked player. Simms just needs to admit he doesn't like the patriots so he'll always have something negative to say about what they do
Plus the falcons already have Cousins and the patriots NEEDED A QB. Massive difference
Fr
doesn't look like Jerod has any idea
As a Tennessee guy, I don’t know who the hell he’s talking about the Joe Milton I know can throw a football a mile but couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with it. I couldn’t wait for him to leave.
😂 People like Chris assumes that any QB that gets drafted in the later rounds is the next Tom Brady. 😂 Does anyone remember Danny Etling in 2018?
Here is one big difference. Tony Romo will never be in the Hall of Fame. There are not that many late round drafts that are in the Hall. But there is an abounding amount of first rounders in the Hall of Fame. They were the best in College and are expected to be great in the NFL. Jimmy Garopolo got to a super bowl. Don't expect him in the Hall any time soon. But with Tom Brady. He is Sports Royalty. He has all the NFL records. Not to be broken any time soon. Had an 18 & 0 start of a season, which had never been done ever in Professional Sports. All 4 leagues. (That has been broken by the Spurs. 20 something and 0) And 7 rings with 2 teams. When you are the Quarterback, if the team fails, it's on you. So it goes just the same, when the team wins, it's because of you. Fault or Praise. So if you think he doesn't deserve this, you're wrong. A lot of work had to be done to accomplish this. Give him his credit. Someone like him only comes around once per Century. Be glad we got to live it.
Drafting a guy top5 and sitting him does make sense Simms, if my dad was a football legend, id have a nice lil job too... Guy think Macs a starting QB 😂
Milton is the most innacurate passer I’ve ever seen. Coming from a michigan fan that really wanted him to work. He’s a TE, not a QB
