It's been known to happen yes. New rules make it more complicated. First of all, there are less spots in the race (down to 60 nowadays), so you don't want to risk not qualifying if you're not protected. And for a protected rider (top 20 men and top 10 women) they still get slotted into the last 20 down the hill on race day, so they would not be dropping in hours before the rest of the top guys anyway.
