I have no idea about racial stereotypes in the US, or just in particular. So this video was very helpful to understand the hits and discussion about race in the short story. Thank you

Hi Rebecca. Thanks for your thoughtful analysis. I've just read "Recitatif," and it's amazing how race is both present and absent in the story. Clearly, Morrison has scrubbed the story of all racial indicators. And yet, It's amazing how much we want race (or the indicators of race) to be there. We want that bizarre comfort that comes with racial stereotypes. I thought there were a few "having fun with the reader" lines such as: ""Things are not right. The wrong food is always with the wrong people." I think I agree that the story is about the deep shared trauma of these two girls and why they had those feelings and desires to hurt Maggie. Plus, there is the interesting question of memory at play too. Thanks for you analysis.

I think Twyla and Roberta killed Maggie. As I was doing a close reading for class I noticed how Twla mentions killing someone 5 times the first 5 pages. Twla mentions killing 7 times throughout the story. “If Roberta had laughed I would have killed her,”
When referring to Roberta’s skill in the game “she was a killer” “but what is somebody tries to kill her?” When referring to her mom calling her Twla baby “I could have killed her” and in the chapel “she needed to be killed.” “I could have killed her” when her mother didn’t bring lunch. When Twyla ran into Robert at the grocery store “she was dressed to kill.” Near the end when describing the road a little before bumping in Roberta again Twyla says “the streets could be murder at the beginning of snowfall.” Thus explaining the ending “What the hell happened to Maggie?” Indeed

This was definitely on my mind when I read the last line... She totally blocked out even wanting to hurt Maggie, but there's the possibility that they actually brutalized her themselves, or worse. So much scarier when you read it with this idea in mind.

Mmmm. You need to write about a novel? Can you choose any novel from any time and place? Some great contemporary American novels include ALL THE PRETTY HORSES, THE LIFE OF PI, and THE KITE RUNNER. Then there are Hemingway novels, such as FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS. You might like Amy Tan novels such as THE JOY LUCK CLUB. HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS LOST THEIR ACCENT is another good one. I really like THE THINGS THEY CARRIED, about the Vietnam War experience. Thousands of amazing novels out there!

It is about disability, but also about race and also about class. It is an intersectional story and it is very connected to Sula and the guilt of the girls in that book after the murder of the child Chicken Little, only this is about a white and a Black girl. I like your analysis but I am afraid you are projecting that it is not about race. It is very interesting that Roberta saw Maggie as Black and Twyla didn't: they both identified with Maggie. Twyla had the privilege to not really think about Maggie's race - like to me you do whilst repeating that the story is not about race....
The rest of the analysis is nice and deep. Thanks for that.
