- In this video, I review my Volkswagen Golf R32 against a stage 2 tuned Volkswagen Golf GTI to answer the age old question - which is better? A naturally aspirated large lump hot hatch or the turbocharged smaller younger brother from VW's lineup at the time.
The interesting part about this review is the GTI is running a stage 2 map which means it's got more power than the R32 so how do both cares fare against each other?

The pops and bangs are very overkill for my liking but other than that it's a clean build. I'd still personally take the R32 for the unique factor of it, and the sound

That was my dad’s car! Up until November 2020, we loved this car so much, but had to sell it because of the ULEZ laws in London. It is the same number plate, and I still remember when we had the pioneer screen installed in Hounslow!

Oh wow! What a small world. The cars still in very good hands and the mileage is also very low. It's been well looked after and the bodywork and interior is immaculate! Not sure why your dad sold it due to ULEZ as it's compliant but nonetheless, it's a great car today because of all the owners who have looked after it
That’s very good to hear. I actually showed him this video and he said that it wasn’t because of ULEZ, but it was our insurance was almost £700 a month…. It was getting way too expensive for us! Contrary to what you showed in your collab, it WAS stolen in 2018, and costed a thousand pounds to return to us 5 months later. All of this just meant that we had to give it to webuyanycar, even though we loved it so much!
This car has featured in Calvin's Car Diary and a CarVertical check was done and there's no record of it ever being stolen. Also, the road tax on this car was always dire so if £700 insurance was too much then it's likely the road tax would've always been a problem for your dad.
I’m not sure about the reliability of your CarVertical check, as it was stolen under our ownership. I so remember one morning waking up and not seeing it in the driveway, and when I showed my dad he went into a full on panic 😭
The insurance began at roughly £575 per month when we bought it from auto trader a while ago. The timing belt/chain had to be replaced which also costed a huge amount of money. All of that plus the expensive petrol just led to him not being able to keep up with the costs.
When a car is reported stolen, it becomes flagged on the national police computer and it stays until it's found. The second part is the car will never be HPI clear ever again as the stolen mark stays on the cars record and neither my HPI check when I bought it and Calvin's check showed anything
There's no paperwork showing the timing chain has been has been replaced either.

From the U.S here 🙋🏽♂️ I currently own both MK5 GTI and R32. Motor on my GTI is completely stock but I did fully polyurethane bushings for the suspension and it’s a BLAST to drive on the back roads. But the 32 keeps a smile on my face the moment I touch the pedal 💙. I’d like to get a exhaust to get the pops yours makes! Sounds mint 🤌🏽 R32 for the win!

There’s no replacement for displacement. End of the day if you boost the r32 the sky’s the limit 2.0 will only get you so far at a major cost to reliability
Nothing like a boosted or supercharged R32. The noise and the power in one package!
Just watched the Calvin video. Great content! Just wanted to ask how you are able to get the pop and bangs from the overun? Is it just a de cat and stage 1 map?
It's a tune that I've had put on the car. If you've got aggressive map with proper pops and bangs, you'll destroy the cats over time but mine are light enough so they're not gonna cause issues.
The stage 1 was done prior to me buying the car so the overrun was just added on top
I own a MK5 GTI with all the same modifications as you, but to get the power to the ground i did the following, limited slip differential, stage 1 DSG tune, 60 durometer rubber mounts, polyurethane bushes, interior and exterior tie bars. Braking consists of Porsche 986 calipers 4 pistons and stock 312x25 2 piece calipers, stops kn a dime.

The GTI is an excellent car for the money but there's a lot that had to be done for it to be an enjoyable toy. That being said, it doesn't cost too much to do those things or run one.
The R32 is great from factory but very little to be done to make it better than it already is and it's less personalised to an owner due to this.

Theres a 450hp golf GTI mk5 by me and honestly tha thing raws and the pops and bangs are soo nice but still personally i would rather the R34 but dont get me wrong i would own a mk5 GTI but the R32 rumble its just so nice
There's nothing like the sound of an R32
Recently bought a Golf R32 Japanese import and the jerk is from the dual clutch transmission, in my experience the jerk doesn't always happen but I've been told that it's just the clutch engaging. Mines only got 70k on the clock. Amazing car regardless.
It's very dim witted on the R32 when changing from D to R or vice versa. The GTI for some reason doesn't have this hesitation but the R32s suffer from it
Yeah always let the car come to a full stop before selecting reverse or drive, and yeah definitely the jerk can get annoying sometimes. You'll see my R32 around in Newham/Tower Hamlets area.

I have a 35 editing golf pretty sure it's a similar motor to your r and I also experience the slightly jerky gear box going into 1st or reverse, just make sure the car is stopped when you engage those gears keep your foot on the break and you suddenly feel it lock into gear and not pull away jerky, in reverse like a manual it still likes a particular amount of revs to not be jerky but it's still the same hold break wait a moment you'll feel it lock into gear and start pulling back with out any jerk!
Mine is a jap import and does the exact same thing mate had new clutches put on and still does it so wouldn’t worry 👍
That exhaust sound is absolute madness! Not quite so sure about the brap brap! overrun but each to their own 😂
You're right though, mk5 is now cheap enough for a tuning toy
My exhaust took a lot of work to get it to sound the way it did. Was very hard work!
I noticed in your video with Calvin that you had an oil temp gauge fitted to the R32. How long do you find on average it takes to get up to temp?
It varies with the outside temperature and the conditions. Stop start driving does make it warm up faster
I would just say buy them both as it would be cheaper then a golf R and theses cars are going up in value. Also you don’t see meany on the roads a car going up in value is a great place to be especially if you enjoy it Great video 👏🏾👍🏾👊🏽

as an r32 owner , i can claim to the fact of the gearbox feeling a bit clunky , it could be the tune? i know when its in sport mode it isnt as clunky , it could be designed to be pushed harder. i know going from forward to reverse it is a bit clunky as well , i just give it a couple seconds to engage.

I was lucky to pick up a Mk5 Gti with 41k ,one owner from new,3 dr ,candy white , 6 speed manual . I love this car used every day.

I do a 70 mile (some town but most on motorway) commute and wondering whether to go for the R32 or 130i, both solid engines and insane noise. What’s the better cruiser, mpg and more reliable out the two in your view, and have you had any issues with the R32 AWD system🤔 nice one
Never had an issue with the haldex system on the R32. Very reliable car all round. Just very thirsty. I'd recommend a manual car also.
The 130i is a decent car as it's features the N52/N53 but the car itself is quite small and it's not a very good looking car in my opinion.
Neither car sounds suited to what you're after but the R32 seems to be the better shout
@@CarNitty Do you prefer the manual to the DSG ? and you’re right tbh neither is suited 😅, it’s a catch 22 as time is running out on experiencing the wonders of a NA engine and that sound
I think the DSG is effortless and the manual gives it much needed involvement as well as the better fuel economy.
Then buy the R32 as the last NA unlike 6 from BMW that gets me tingling is the M54 block. Not a fan of the N52/N53 personally. That's when turbocharging became a norm and these last NA engines always felt outdated for their era
@@CarNitty In the E39 that block is special! would you say your R32 from the era of naturally aspirated engines makes the best sound and better than the M54 & N52? also, I wonder what your thoughts are on the R32 tax now which goes up every year like mad!
The M54 is an amazing sounding motor but it's still no VR6. N52 isn't my cup of tea I'm afraid and if you can't keep up with the tax cost of an R32, hold out for 55 reg model which fall in the lower band

Would interested to hear your thoughts on the difference. I have a 320ci myself and always wonder what a 330ci would feel like in comparison

What are your thoughts on the power difference and driving experience between the 320 and 330? Does the same engine but different power make a big difference?
@AmanSingh-si4hc the M54B30 is not a fast car by today's standards but it's the fastest you can get without owning an M3 in the E46. The M54B22 is 50BHP slower which will no doubt be felt if you were to compare them side by side

Very underrated car and will and still surprise a few modern day cars remember the mk5 Golfs came out 23 years ago 2006 still drives and looks ok in 2023

R32 owner here in mint condition (Japanese import, 48k miles). That DSG jerkiness is probably either the mechatronic system needing replacing, or air/fuel mix issues. Had the same thing myself until I get it checked, just had to replace the MAF and give it a good service. DSG has been smooth ever since.
I've had that issue in every R32 I've ever sat in which is crazy to think!
@@CarNitty In fairness though, many UK R32s have been battered by their previous owners. Not surprised the auto shift controller is getting knackered if the cars aren't getting maintained. Would highly recommend a Japanese import if you're looking for a clean build, those guys know how to take care of their cars and they never come with rust issues as their roads don't need salt like ours do.
Issue is the mileage and service history is a big gamble
Cams, headers and a tune will get the R32 close to that tuned GTI and much more reliably. Throw in a fuel pump, some larger injectors and a tune and the R32 has it beat...that's before adding forced induction.
gearbox is not jerky,reason is the r32 is NA engine so its alot more responsive and agresive on throttel simple as that
The Gti fly by was more intense mk4 vr6 has the best sound . But i love any vw golf

I can say it was not a hard decision for me buying an R32. The nostalgic feeling, the R32 ticks every box. Every time i drive this car i have a smile on my face. Just the sound and feeling of this car is fantastic. i must say the maintenance costs are not cheap but what a car money cant put a price on how nice this car is. If you want something fast and nippy this may not be the best car for the budget. I wouldn't say the R32 is mega slow. But price comparison for more speed and power there is a whole different market.

gti way better more cheaper and u can make it 4wd and u can get way more power out of it so whats the point to have an r32 ? or even an tdi 4 motion better

To be fair, a MK5 GTI with a simple tube will leave an R32, but you just cannot beat that V6 sound. Underpowered but still an incredible car!

Think you need an R32 in manual - why have a naturally aspirated engine with an auto ? I get the dsg on a turbo not a 3.2 V6. You gotta make it sing
The DSG does let it sing but the control factor of a manual revving out would no doubt feel amazing

I reviewed this exact GTI when Azadul picked this up so I managed to get that review in before but thank you for your offer
Firstly, yes the gti is still milk and juice. Even the golf 8r is still milk and juice. Secondly, take your r32 to an approved dealer for the jerking. I've owned mine for 5 years now but no jerking. Gearbox is so smooth that if you cruising along from a red light it will be in 6 already at 55 km/h. Thirdly, no milk and juice will beat the r32. Yes the golf 6, 7 and 8 r is way quicker. You don't buy an r32 because you want to go 320 km/h. You buy it for it's respect it's a fun car to drive. The golf 8r feels like u driving a video game the fake sound is played through the speakers. And lastly the 2.0 engines has less longevity it's either the turbo blows out or another engine problem. The r32 engine is strong and reliable. So stop comparing 3,2 l to milk and juice. And now for a piece of advice please stop pointing the camera in your face.
I've bought another R32 and I'm now my 3rd one and the hesitancy been D and R is still there. This is also a reconditioned gearbox.

I've bought another R32 which has a reconditioned gearbox and it has the same dim wittedness.
And this isn't a POV video to show the road
