What’s crazy is when I went to Laos I’m 2010/2011, it wasn’t much different from this video! But today in 2023, Laos has changed so much, they changed significantly in the past 10 years.
Yes, i can confirm this, i've been here first in 2011, and Vientiane changed a lot in the past 12 years. I spent 3 year now in rural Laos due to Covid lockdowns, but i can tell you, some of the places i could not recognize from the video today, as they changed a lot ... Still a lovely place to stay.
I can assure you those didn’t come about because of Lao government with good intentions. Changes because greeds n corruption, Laotians are not the main beneficiaries.
thats because after the communist took over in the 70s, time just stood still, no progress until now and thats because Chinese money pumping in making laos stay in debt to them.
It looks so peaceful, but there was fighting going on at that time. The Laos Crisis of 1960-1963 was the first foreign policy crisis faced by John F. Kennedy. You first get a hint of what's happening when you see the girl splash water on a jeep during the Lao New Year celebrations. Just a couple of weeks after that footage was filmed, a ceasefire was called. It didn't last, of course, and the situation escalated not long after.
This movie is a family movie, and i was 12 when my father shot it.. So, yes, i know the story. My mother brother and myself were repatriated because of the Pathet Lao offensive in the Jar Plain.. All the occidental families did the same, but not this blonde woman with the small baby in her arms. She wanted to be with her husband ( a tough woman, named Andrée Gely ) But at the end, the situation was really impossible. She could not stay, but there was no more flight. So my father did pretend she was her wife and they passed the Thailand frontier by car..
Laos has too many corrupted officials, and there is nothing Lao people can do about it. The head (leader) of the Communist party has close to $100 million to spend while most Lao people are still poor and trying to make ends meet.
