Elsie Tanner (Pat Phoenix),
Ena Sharples (Violet Carson), Minnie Caldwell (Margot Bryant).....Marvelous!
I was 12 when the series started. We're all very used to regional accents on TV now but, in 1960, it was unheard of. There would be an occasional cockney or Scot... Welsh at a pinch but never by actors who were native to the regions they were portraying. No one with a natural regional accent could work in TV back then so 'Corrie' was a huge revolutionary step. The only TV & radio personality prior to that who could get away with a northern accent was Wilfred Pickles.
The 'drama' was never particularly dramatic back then but audiences liked the characters and the nitty-gritty.
Pat Phoenix was gorgeous. The greatest actor in British soap in my opinion
Well the biggest Soap "Star" for sure
I loved her
@sachinchhahal4131 ... Not as gorgeous as Ena Sharples. A real knock out especially with the hair net on. 🤣🤣
Well, certainly one of the best, Hilda Odgen was excellent too, then there's Julia Brogan from Brookie, Mrs.Mack from TTHigh Road and of course Deirdrie Barlow/Langton/Rachid.
Remember seeing this show in late 60s, here in Canada. My mom would be watching it when I came home from kindergarten. That theme music always stuck in my head over the years though I never watched show until beginning of pandemic 4 plus years ago. Now it’s one of few shows I watch religiously every day.
the way they show the credits way back then is just amazing
18 + yrs before i was born started watching from the year i was born 1978 but curiosity took me back to the very first episode nice too see where all the characters came from i am obsessed with old corantion street but not so much past 10 yrs not watch it not the same anymore 😢
Old is Gold!
Couldn't agree more!
@@Thefan Surely indeed with this Notalgic season! Love the sense how older morals and values were very devoting and caring for their own loved ones. No matter; where the individual came from, what race or background they'd belong to. Britain's nation gave it's heart equal to everyone!
Nowaday's, all this Gold from the heart kept fading away through new generations and left with selfishness! The new Corronation Street seasons today are nothing like the old ones...
Tanx, tanx, tanx to the generous individual who made these Coronation Street episodes available; grew up with them and then left the nest and lost the connection. If it is possible, please keep them coming to bring me up to date with England's greatest soap opera in television history. Tanx! -- Tanx! -- Tanx! -- Tanx! -- Tanx!
Before my time... ( I was born Sunday 22nd of January 1961) but a few days ago, just out of curiosity, I found myself watching the very first 3 episodes... now I'm sort of.. getting addicted to these early episodes. It brings back memories of when I was a young lad. My late mum loved watching every episode :) coming from a big family of 5 brothers n 2 sisters we had to be quiet when Coronation Street started :) I always remember a particular time when we were being a little too loud for my mum to hear what was being said, imagine " Shhh!.. quiet!"...us kids trying to be quiet!!.. mum.. "oh I missed what they said now".. :) . I guess I'm just sharing my childhood memories of my mum :). Gonna keep watching these early episodes before and beyond I was born./ My favourite characters were Hilda and hubby Stan :)
Thank you for that lovely trip down your memory lane , did you know that the original setting of Coronation St was Bessy St and if you research Harold Riley artist, you will probably find his sketch of Bessy St , maybe be still available online , I got one from Salford Uni in 2012 (Grad Gift) Harold Riley was a friend of L S Lowry. Happy viewing & best Wishes from the West of Ireland.
Ena Sharpels, what a character she played. I only caught her last year or so previously and thou she had the attitude she had somewhat quietend a little with age. The energy and acting is something else, all the characters are terrific.
Watched it from day one for years but then it lost it's appeal
Great characters back in the 60s
First time I ever saw Ena Sharples grin when she told him there's a copper knocking on your door.
Lol
Yep, and it was like watching a bulldog chewing a wasp!
Amazing and much appreciated. a MAN from Scotland 2024 +
This acting is quite brilliant !
I can still remember watching the first episode.
I was born in '61, and in my memory, Ena Sharples always wore a hairnet. The only time we saw Violet Carson's hair, was on Stars on Sunday
If I remember correctly, these early episode were filmed in one take, no rehearsing, no editing. They had to get it right first time.
It's great how they used to tell people when the next episode was on at the end
Time to read the credits, every word could be heard and good storylines.
Love these old episodes and the credits although everyone seems old before their time.
Those Northern folks had very hard lives back then, hardship made many people look old before their time.
Again amazing that Joan Heath who played May Hardman was only 48 at the time (born 1912). Everyone did dress and look much older than their time.
They really did, I didn't realise she was only 48 in this, would have thought she was much older.
@@Thefan Also Ida Barlow was only about 45 here. Her hairstyle and fashion was that of a 75 year old.
There were old lady and middle age lady uniforms in 50's/early 60's!😊 Ena looks Victorian!
Why the obsession with colorising
Everything that was black and white???
They always dressed the same style as parents ...there were no teenagers till 60s that's when rock n roll fashion pop was born so broke away from parents style.
Wasn’t allowed to watch these early years as I was 7 and under “under age”. The theme tune coming on meant “time for bed too”. It’s interesting to see what I missed - it is so like our own lives then in Boro. I had an Auntie who was just like Ena but we simply called her “Auntie Demon”; with affection of course.
We also had to turn the tele off after an hour or so to “let it cool down” 😂
I quite liked these in b & w....seemed more suited to it somehow. And it's how l remember them from my childhood. But enjoying them a lot
Me too.
Love these and particularly love the ending credits the way they did this.
Watched this with my Mum brings back so many understandings and feelings from my childhood, very profound, the dialog and drama is really first rate, Ena's character is amazing, thanks very much TF have subbed and looking forwards to watching many more.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
That Doctor, black as the chimney back says Ena.
Dayum!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Very well done considering that it was live television. You can see a few stumbles with the lines, but all were quickly covered up. I particularly liked the moving of the mirror. When the camera angle changed the mirror was reflecting the bright lights. Somehow the actress was notified about this and she nonchalantly changed the mirror's angle to stop the reflection. Watch as her hand casually turns the mirror while looking the other way.
It wasn't live, it was recorded as "live" rehearse then record, any mistakes were left in, no second or third takes
wasnt even born when this came out but im loving it i love corrie so mcuch has changed over the years❤❤❤❤❤❤
i watched the black and white episodes. This is an interesting take on the original. Its like getting modern actors to re create classics. It can make the original more precious.
I remember watching it in black and white on a 24inch tele, lol
Nobody had a 24inch tele till the 1980’s. Back then in 1960 you were lucky if the screen was 10 inches at the most !!!!
Thank you for posting ❤
The priest was the star from Dad's Army how fabulous Arthur Lowe such terrific acting by all ❤️💙
Coranation street started the year I was born 😊 I grew up with it.😊
Corrie at it best upto the 90s.
Then started going downhil and became complete dross..stopped watching it 2004 or so.
So these classic videos are a godsend!
Yeah the early episodes were the best especially through the 1960s and 70s and then into the early eighties.
The eighties were all about getting money and rich and greedy. My least favourite decade .
I used to watch Corrie at my maternal gran's house because she was a big fan of Corrie, I think Corrie was OK till the mid '00's then very gradually went downhill.
I was 5 years old when coranation street started. A few years later when l joined the sea scouts violet Carson was special guest at our local fate people loved her Edna sharples was a big favourite character.
I was 7...memories with mum n dad.thanks
I'm America and just watching these...interesting...
I love watching corrie
Best day gone by
Wish they would return!
I enjoyed these a lot. Very well done thankyou
Glad you like them!
I was born in Oct of this year! So only a couple of months old.
Back in the day most 60 year olds looked like they were at deaths door !
Most 40 year olds looked 60!
Yes they looked old, but they weren’t that old were they?
Love the old coronation episodes not the episodes they make now rubbish . I was ten years old when the first episodes were made I started watching in my teenage years, Elsie Tanner was one of my favourites.
Great memories. Must have been made on a shoestring with not much time for editing - like when the huge microphone came down in the snug bar and stayed there for ten seconds before they raised it out of sight again. Also,it was fashionable to smoke in those days as most of the cast did in the show, though most of them probably didn't in real life, as they rarely inhale and just puff the smoke out.
Them choir boys will be nearly 70 now
Just like where my mum grew up, same accent as well. It sounds like home to me
Funny seeing Arthur Lowe as Leonard Swindley before his Dad's Army days.
He was in a spin-off of this role too, a show called Pardon the Expression
@@Thefan A priest called Swindly 😊
If only they would be allowed to sing "Good King Wenceslas" in a programme today!
Annie sounds northern and not her usual la di da self 😂
Thank you.
The landlady, (forgotten her name), reminds me of my Grandma.....
Annie walker
Love the regional accents...more diluted today unfortunately..
Oddly, the year in Roman numerals under the Granada Television credits at the end of the first program translates to 1969, yet it states here the programs are from 1960.
Who's that camp one?... Ahh Dennis
Dennis came back a couple of years ago, he and Rita started courting, then he let himself down as he always did.
I've watched every episode.
The Vestry is right next door to the pub😂❤😂❤😂
A story I heard was they poured real alcohol in the early days in Rovers Return
As a kid I was dead scared of ena Sharples 😁😁😁today shes be the local karen .
I watched Corrie from 1989 through to 2018, when I got bored of the miserable storylines. My husband still watches it though.
The copyright date on the 1st episode appears to be 1969? Not 1960.
This was when coronation street was worth watching, the story lines were more believable, the new episodes are just crap.
It was the way it used to be, bickering was a bit stronge and monotonous but the assumed poverty was about right where people were stuck within a closed community waiting for strangers to enlighten them.
Speccy 4 eyes....😂
You people complaining. There is a solution if you don't like it. Have you heard of it? It's called DON'T WATCH IT THEN!
I used to love to watch coronation street when I was young in Australia…didn’t it start out in black and white ?
It was originally - this has been colourised.
There's a channel in the description that has the original Black and White episodes
Yes,I prefer these early episodes in colour , it adds to the overall enjoyment of the show.Black and White is so dull and bland after all we don't see in black and white.
London lovielys 😂😂 full clothed .
Since Im just dipping in and out of these episodes, I can afford to pick and choose who I watch. I ignore the Barlows and the Hewitts, always the most boring and stereotypical of Tony Warren's creations, (no wonder Noel Dyson got out early), and get to the Tanner's really charming Mother and Son situation. Not even a young Dennis (Philip) fluffing his lines could ruin this scene, Elsie (Pat) was brilliant at carrying him through, I think she adapted her own line on live tv to make some sense out of his mistake. Bravo. And the warmth between the characters eventually shone right through. Then Ena in hospital spitting out diatribes to all within earshot. When she was describing the 3 doctors, one of whom in gross non-politically correct terms, I suddenly confused her face with Les Dawson. The script here was wonderful, but realise I will be going to the Woke version of Hell for laughing so loud. Thank you for these...........
I expect you'll have lots of company in Woke Hell because that line about the doctor and the chimney was very funny😂🤣 Also he was a doctor so there's that.
@@happiness4812
You've reminded me to enjoy Violet Carson once again. I wonder if she realised that she'd effectively broken the fourth wall in her exclamation of infamy. I'd forgotten about that. First time ever in a soap I should think.........
THAT BLOKE FROM THE CHURCH SOUNDS LIKE THE MISTER MEN
It is him .
Yes, Arthur Lowe. He also played Captain Mainwaring in Dads Army, he played the vicar in Bless Me Father, he was also in many films between 1948 and 1982. He played in many other series as well like All Aboard, The Last of the Baskets, etc, etc. He was narrator and did the character voices in 28 episodes of the MR Men between 1974 and 1978.
Only 15 years after the war
Seems like worlds apart doesn't it?
Annie's accent got posher over time.
Does this programme still exist ?
It does, it's still on the air to this day
@kevphillips02 ... Yes it's still being made today, it's Britain's longest running soap opera, it has been continuously made and shown for 64 years.
@@martinwebb1681amazing, may it continue.
The end credits says 1959 doesnt it?? 😮
Vera Lomaz
🌹❣️🌹🇦🇺
My word I knew that programme was bad but I didn’t remember how dreadful it really was.
How do you add colour? Are you guessing?
Its with an AI trained on thousands of black and white images and their colour counterparts
@@Thefan Thank you for all your hard work ❤
I cant remember what minnies cat was called😊
Bobby
Arthur lowe
Annie Walker didn’t talk as posh in the early days. More Northern.
Dennis Tanner is a tad bit camp
I was just thinking the same
Annie walker sounds no where near as posh as she sounded later on.
And so the propaganda begins.
Stopped watching about 2012 when it became too political correct. Now woke too. Such a shame 😢
Buggernation Street is better.
Is better? I didn't realise that was still going?!
@@Thefan It is but not on CZcams. He charges to view and it's not cheap. They were good but I'll wait until he drops his price. He does have previews on CZcams though.
Please, please dont colour it.
Why not?I think it improves the quality of the programme.
Original black and white available here on CZcams too
Theres a link to the channel that uploaded the black and white version in the description
It’s time they drew a line under coronation st…biggest load of boring 💩.
Not more bloody colourizing. Can't you leave things as they were made. It's bw so what. That's how we saw it & enjoyed it for many years. You're are a bloody menace to TV & film history.
The original B&W versions were uploaded by 'Auntie Corrie'.
I link to her in the description of every colourised Corrie video.
I checked my Analytics, and I'm sorry to say that the colourised episodes of Coronation Street are some of my most popular content; though you may not like it, there are plenty of people that do ....
Seltaeb. Calm down Karen, I like the colourised episodes. They bring the characters to life more.
How wonderful to have a choice, thank you, it’s amazing to bring these into colour. I absolutely love it.😘
@@bevtilbrook1675 That's lovely to hear, thank you for your kind words.
@@Thefan hey this sounds stupid but can you also make colourised episodes in black and white lol
When England was white with English folk……..
I was 6 years old when this episode went out, and my mum and dad loved it as did most people we knew. It's now woke nonsense, with half the street gay or some other " minority,"
