Some say that the smash community has gone soft. Back in the good old days, they will tell you, every win was for bragging rights first and everything else second. Today, we're too gentle, too kind, to ever return to those days. Over the course of two days in twilight of Smash's lock down era, two players proved that belief was wrong.
In July of 2021, two top 100 Smashers would come together in what may be the game's grimiest grudge match, at least of its modern era. This is the story of magi and mvlvchi, the rollback rumble salty suite.
This set was something i saw personally live and had always said i would make a video covering if i had a platform. I have one now, so I reached out to the two players from this set, production, and falco-peach experts to go over this bitter rivalry.

i saw some trans emotes in the twitch chat clips, so looked into you more and was kinda suprised to see you are trans. being a trans person myself im really jealous of how great you look, and obvi your performance in smash, it inspires me to work at my own comp game, and improve (tf2 is that game)
It's funny the hugs vs magi salt, hugs was actually pretty famous for never losing to falco players for the longest time, even made ppmd switch to marth in at least one set I remember.

I'm not even that big into melee and after finding your latest video on DK, I think I've found a new favorite channel to chill out with. You're very good at documentary editing, and I can tell from the responses you get during your interviews with figures from the stories that you're good at asking the right questions about a given subject. Great work.
This is exactly why smash as a whole is my favorite spectator sport

Melee can really be the coolest, it's like the two pushed themselves into discovering new ways to play against one another. Respect for both of the players for doing this, even if it was born of salt.

Great music editing in this video. It stands out from some other melee video essay i watched recently with more views where the game music was clashing at the same volume as the added background music. I like that you take care to have the audio be great. The video also looked and flowed great as well :)
Thank you! I've tried to use some eq and noise gating in this one to reduce some of that. It's not all quite where I'd like it, but I'm no professional with this stuff.

Yeah. That was part of why Mvlvchi was going by Messenger of God (which is what the name Malachi means in English) . He didn't want to make things more confusing.

Critique.... don't tell us the outcome before it's shown on screen. When you edit Magi saying that she wins 5-3 it kinda ruins the suspense for a viewer that doesn't know the outcome.

I agree with Armada-the Peach vs Falco matchup is in Falco's favor. The only weakness Falco has is his recovery-but everyone acknowledges that a good Falco will win neutral and not to mention he can edge guard her decently too. This means Peaches will pretty much always have to pray they win the mixup game and then have flawless punish/edgeguards-just cause lasers can be avoided by certain float heights simply means very little-Peach has a very predictable trajectory of approach once she's floated over the laser. Falco just turns around and uptilts-or he can literally just back up and keep lasering to force her overcommit.
Peach invalidates Falco's lasers, immediately invalidating his greatest keepaway option. Even if the float means predictable mixup from Falco, he still has to approach Peach, giving her the opportunity to hit him. He has to play her game.
Peach has the edge guard on point for Falco too. The advantage he has is very slight considering how vulnerable he is compared to Fox
