  • Matt Dye and Adam Keith of Land & Legacy discuss what they think are some of the best options when deciding what to use for a food plot screen. Egyptian wheat, corn and giant miscanthus come to mind for many. But, what about a native shrub/tree/grass mixture that is much more permanent and beneficial for deer and other wildlife?

Sounds great, men! You gotta come back with a time laps on that. I also noticed some nice brush piles. Birds, rabbits and other critters will greatly benefit from those.

I'm confused with your screening. Will it take seven years before its effective? It almost sounded like a food plot strip. Just don't get it.

For all the shrubs and pines to establish and get to a significant size it will take several years. But, the mixture of the native grasses will provide good screening after just a year or two. The point of using the shrubs and pines is because for one, they are both native species, and two, the shrubs will provide good woody browse in stress periods like late winter.

Are you putting an annual screen in for the first year? Great plan.

No, Adam wasn't planning on putting in an annual on this site. Just the mix of pine, shrubs and native grasses.

Great video. Curious.. wife wants sweet corn but here in northern Missouri its rolling hill country. So a big area for corn on a flat surface wont happen at our place. I was thinking about planting it along side of the main ditch on the bottom blocking my plots an travel corridor along there its visibility from the road up top. An yes I would run electric around corn till we are done with it. Your thoughts

We say whatever makes the wife happy, do it!! Lol! If you can plant it and block visibility for your access we don't see why that wouldn't work! Plenty of people use standing corn for screens. Matt and Adam were discussing some other options for people to consider!
