If you're having trouble wondering why the 32s should be in front.. my guess is the 69 would make more of a seal for the gases.

John Brown ordered 1000 pikes from Collins Co. in Collinsville, CT.
One of my neighbors had one, and he donated it to a local museum.
As I recall, it was a double edged point, attached to a pole about 7 feet long.
In the early 90's, i visited Harpers Ferry, and saw the armory where Brown was wounded & captured.

As an amateur Gun Historian, the period from 1830 to 1920, is a fascinating 90 years to study. The leaps forward in firearm technology during this period are just astounding, when looking at a timeline of the advances. This musket, an excellent example of the beginning of that period. Flint and powder, had been the pinnacle for almost (the first non matchlock was developed in the mid 1500s) for nearly 300 years. Even as this Percussion cap was being issued in 1848, efforts were underway to develop breechloading, and within 30 years the concept of metallic cartridges were being developed as the Civil War began and ended. Within 10 years of the War, metallic cartridges and lever actions were being designed and released on the market. Less than 30 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the Kräg-Jôrgenson Bolt actuon Rifle was adopted by the US Military. During that same 30 years we went from Black Powder to Cordite to Nitrocellulose based gunpowders by theeatly 1890s. Hiram Maxim would release me his VP first machine gun, that operated using the cartridge's energy release to cycle the action. All of this before the 19th century closed.
By 1920, the basis for every firearm we now use, was in place. Advancements were made from 1920 on, but most were further refinements of the technology we gained in that short 90 years.
What a period in our history? Not just in the US, but in Europe too.

Yes, it is a really fascinating time period evolving in weapons technology. I myself come from Norway where we were far ahead with the first chamber loader / breech loader in 1848. And in 1994, the Krag - Jørgensen, with a still modern cartridge, the 6.5X55 Swedish. Fascinating that the year before, the USA Army also adopted the Krag -Jørgensen rifle in 1893, in caliber 30-40 with a rim cartridge - Few years after they again where obsolate, cause the German Mauser rifles... 🤠👌

winchester loads a "buck and ball" style load in a modern 12ga shell, it's a 1oz slug with 3 OO buck pellets on top. The slug is accurate as any foster slug and the 3 pellets usually triangulate themselves around the slug nicely at reasonable ranges. The pellets on top seems to be the way to go muzzleloader or cartridge.

Wow, I just got a dreadful of what I wanted to see you do. You nailed it with this awesome video. I live in Ashburn VA not far from Harper’s Ferry….. As you usuallly ask my name is Kevin and I started in the junior targeteers in 1977…. I would loce to have an old black powder in my small collection, once was real big, but dad passed in 1995 and I promised mom I wouold sell them alll. So I did. Well here we are today and As usual, I loved this video and I willl purchase a nice black powder rife as you have. Soon. Please tell me where to start researching. I am not looking for great marksman ship with such a rife. It’s the nostalgia that inspires me. And who better to fire me up on most anything. Is You. gosh you have taught me so much over all these Yesenia years ,you havave no idea of the admiration I have. So you may ask and I will tell. My name is Kevin Carscadden. I grew up in Montvale, N.J and we all shot at the Park Ridge Rifle range with an instructor and my Mentor.James McQuire. He loved to hand me his pistols. ……357 Python, 32 with scope and let me have a thrill…….It was a good time. Some idiot blew his family away and that stopped our fun times….Anyones Son is the book on Harry DeLaroche…..Well , I graduated school and we started shooting again, my dad was my best friend…..He died at 61 yrs old. I just turned 60.
So both me Amy brother now live in Virginia and we go to the local range. The cost is rea high but we have a good time…..His aim blows me away, s I just purchases a Ruger 6 22/22mag……I love it. I’ve shot the 686 S&W and more but I must have 1,000 + rounds of 22 long……I have 10 boxes of 30-06 but never found my Garand…….Well, Have I rambled or what. Cut me a break . I have listed closely to you for many, many years……I’ve listened and learned so much …..I hope you know me now…..571-789-5971…Kevin or Kevvy

I remember that episode. James Whitmore could play some really scary characters at times.

I wish these classic muskets weren’t so damned expensive. I can’t find one around me for under $4000.

I'm looking for a smooth bore flintlock. That is a beautiful musket though.
