  • I cannot recommend giving ‪@RammsteinOfficial‬'s music video Angst enough. It will get you thinking, uncomfortable and scratching your head as to what it all means. Also, if you ever wondered what the guys would look like as suburban Stepford dads this is for you!

The song is about the unreal fear of everything that is foreign. Even as children we are "trained" to do this ("don't talk to strangers", "don't trust strangers"). This fear is then amplified by politicians and influencers via social media because people in fear are easier to control.
Also, the refugees sitting surrounded by the barb wire are the key. In Germany the boogie man is called der schwarze Mann = the black man. Rammstein use it metaphorical. Fear of the unknown, the foreign. Spreaded by fake news and media (newspaper, TV, internet) and so on.

The title "Angst" means fear in English. Till (in the more prominent role of this video) seems to be kind of politician who spreads fear to the people. So they start building walls ... which leads to a desaster.
A central part of the lyrics is about "being afraid of the black man". Originally "black man" stands for a kind of boogie man (or death) in German. There is an old catch and run children's game. One child is the "black man", starting with the phrase "Who's afraid of the black man?". The others answer "No one." ... "And when he comes?" ... "Then we run." The children run away and try to escape the "black man". When one is catched, it is the next "black man". I guess that's originated from medivial time when the plague (or "black death") killed half of the population of Europe. Infected people partly got a black skin and and children were told to stay away from them.
Nevertheless Rammstein is playing with the double meaning of "black man". Some politicians and media spread fear about refugees comming to Europe (very first picture of the video, again referenced in the credits). And even though most of them are not black, they might look a bit different and give a trigger to xenophobia ... which those politicians try to use for their own goals. So "crazy" politicians (one of the two roles, Till plays in the video) and indifferent media just seeking for attention are a dangerous combination. (That is at least my interpretation.)

not surprised your confused, Dom, took me lots of reading up on this..to some it up if thats even possible as you know Rammstein have loads of double meanings etc..even the use of colour is important as its the colours of the far right in Germany..mostly about the fear of anything foreign and the use of the far right to stir it up fear by using the media etc. and then we have the use of language.. ''be afraid of the Blackman/boogieman' which is a old nursery rhyme taught to children in plaque times to warn them off infected people and yes, its generated lots of debate where it should be banned...theres loads more in the video but let someone with a better understanding fill you in ..as usual great job Dom ..keep them coming

Till as a crazy man with wild hair behind the lectern reminds me very much of an American president.
The dance of the cheerleaders is based on the Haka, the New Zealand war dance of the Maori.
Yes, it's Dickmann's that the band members eat. In Germany, they were renamed years ago because the original name was racist.

    • @themetalmuse

Dickmann's is a brand. The generic name for those things in German was originally either Mohrenkopf (moor head) or Negerkuss (negro kiss). Both of which are not considered appropriate anymore, so they're usually called Schaumkuss (foam kiss) or Schokokuss (choco kiss) these days. An Austrian brand name is Schwedenbombe (Swede bomb) in honor of a Swedish guy who played in part in the creation of that particular brand.

I think, the song is about people get manipulated with the right amount of fear which is spread due the mass media and social media. If you watch the video, at the beginning all were happy, had a nice live and the end there a isolated and full of fear, bought weapons and security equipment. I don't think it is about America in the first place, but maybe they thought America is a very good example for this.

Which is only partly true, because it is a Trump reference and not the right in Germany. Till portaied Trump giving a speech to the nation in a straitjacket. They are all references to America. Can't remember that in Germany you can heavily arm yourself with fully automatic heavy weapons. The song came out when Trump wanted to build the wall to Mexico and appealed to the fear of the people.
