  • Stephen Coler from www.stephencoler.com, a 1st Degree Master of the Ohara School of Ikebana, shows you how to create a simple ikebana arrangement step-by-step. The Tateru-katachi, one of the basic forms of the Ohara School, uses only a few stems to create a beautiful and dynamic arrangement. Stephen takes you through the process which enables you to create an original arrangement of your own.
    Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, is a tradition that has been practiced for over 600 years. The art has evolved from simple floral offerings placed on alters into arrangements that decorate the spaces where people live, work, and play.
    Stephen Coler has been studying and teaching ikebana for the past 20 years in Japan. He holds the degree of Sub-Grand Master of the Ohara School of Ikebana. He offers online ikebana lessons that you take you through each arrangement, step-by-step, and explains the "why" behind each step. Students from all over the world, including China, Australia, Germany, Ireland, America, Japan, and India, are enjoying the lessons.

    Could you make an arrangement in a small round space? I have made 2 ikebana bowls with a small diameter at the bottom of about 1.5”.

    • @iwatejapang
      @iwatejapang  Před 4 lety

      mary carlino in a container that small, you would have to use materials that are very small. A Moribana arrangement needs a large space to be made.

      Stephen Coler Thanks Steve for your reply. The vase flares out...outer diameter is about 5”.

      mary carlino for a Moribana arrangement, you need a container with a large, flat bottom. With the container you made, it is not good for a Moribana arrangement. But you could do an arrangement like I did in the video.

    I thought that the water level was really important to ikebana design? I see the flowers are fully open and in their mature state, representing summer, so wouldn’t that mean that the water level should be slightly less than what’s in the container? I’m in Floral design school and currently learning about ikebana so just seeking some guidance and clarification:) thanks

      Morlla234 thank you for your comment. There are over 2000 different schools of ikebana, so there are many ideas/ways to do and interpret what ikebana is. In my school, we always put as much water in the container as possible. That helps to keep the flowers hydrated and makes the arrangement last longer. However, if I were doing a landscape arrangement, I would try to show the seasons by showing more or less of the surface of the water-in winter, showing less of the waters surface, and in summer, showing more. But, other schools might have different thoughts on this. I hope this answered your question. Have a great day!

    How long will that arrangement last?

    • @iwatejapang
      @iwatejapang  Před 5 lety +1

      Uber Glamazon with these materials, I would say it could last up to 2 weeks. But, it needs to be in a cooler place that doesn’t get direct sunlight or is near an air vent. The willow branches will last even longer than the chrysanthemums. You can put them in a bucket of water and roots will sprout from it. Or, you can take them out and let them dry out. Thank you for your comment!

    The end product is beautiful, it just feels a bit daunting as there are so many rules to understand. One feels that it would be difficult to emulate even the style in case of getting something horribly wrong. A fabulous immersive hobby to create beautiful arrangements, but not something that I have the time to invest in.

      Thank you. It does seem a bit daunting at first, but once you understand the basics and do a few arrangements, it is much easier.

    Hi stephen. I have this small question, when we insert the stem into the kenzan, doesn't the end point of the stem becomes weak and provide not enough mechanical support?

    • @iwatejapang
      @iwatejapang  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello. It is actually a very strong support. But if you reinsert many times, it doesn't weaken the stem and you will have to recut it. Some stems like snapdragon are weak, so you add a support to the part that will be inserted into the stem.

      @@iwatejapang Thanks for your reply Stephen. I understand that stems are quite strong enough to pivot the Kenzan. But what happens when I bend it to some angle. Besides why do I have to insert the stem and then bend it at some angle instead of inserting it so that it makes an angle by default?
      In addition, in my first comment I was so excited that I asked the question immediately which made me forget to appreciate your content. I am really grateful to you for making this clear video on Ikebana and also for replying to my query.

    • @iwatejapang
      @iwatejapang  Před 3 lety

      @@raiyyanabdurrahim2645 I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You insert it in first and then lean it into position for strength. If you tried to insert the stem into the kenzan at the prescribed angle, you would most likely break the stem.
