Pokémon Emerald's Broken RNG Explained! (For Shiny Hunters)

  • This video is mostly the basics while going slightly in depth to explain Pokemon Emerald's Random Number Generator, and I then explain what it means for shiny hunters. I worked really hard on this video, so any feedback means a lot!
    If you want to know how to hunt Pokémon you can't SR for in Emerald, I explain how here:
    • How to Shiny Hunt Rayq...
    Update:
    Here's answers to other great questions I've had!
    1) "Does synchronize work?"
    Yes synchronize still works, it shouldn't be done to hunt because things get complex, but for just having a good natured Pokémon it works.
    2) "How common are shiny frames?"
    The actual occurence of shiny frames should average 1 every ~2.27 minutes.
    3) "What if Emerald has a dead battery?"/"If my emerald has a working battery is it okay?"
    An Emerald with a dead internal battery doesn't effect the RNG or act any different than other Emeralds. They all function like this REGARDLESS OF BATTERY. (at least concerning the concepts I covered in the video)
    4) "Can I turn off my game or does it need to be on for the whole hunt?"
    Yes, it is ok to turn off your game, people think frames are far apart so they need to keep it on to hit further frames, but since we've deducted how common they are, turning it off is okay!
    5) "Does this problem exist in Fire Red and Leaf Green?"
    Pokemon Fire Red and Pokemon Leaf Green do not have a battery and are not subject to this problem by any means at all.
    6) "I found a shiny, does this mean I can get more shinies"
    Finding shinies is 100% irrelevant. That and the game's functions are independent variables. All the functions work the exact same still.

    I killed my first shiny I ever encountered in Pokémon Emerald. It was a zigzagoon and I had no idea shinies existed so I freaked out because of the sparkle and killed it, then I realized no sooner than after killing it that it may have been what is refereed to as a "shiny" and I was so upset I didn't play emerald for the rest of the day. >:^\

    Nice video. This was a much needed one for the shiny hunting community, in my opinion.
    I do have one correction: the seed is determined shortly after booting the game, not when you reach the overworld. This means you can reach the overworld with different frame values. (FRLG determines initial seed at the continue screen, but that's another story)
    Another notable thing is that all gen 3 GBA games will change the seed to your TiD when you begin a new game. So you can use that to soft reset in a "safer" way within Emerald and dead battery RS.

    • @shinycollector
      @shinycollector  Před 7 lety +27

      Collector Togami some of this is new information to me, what I got about the seed is was found either right before or during production of this video from Bulbapedia because mostly I just wanted to let people know what is wrong with emerald but it's still huntable if you're smart about it. Because I have had a lot of people tell me they soft reset in Emerald and had no idea and I've had people tell me you can't find shinies in Emerald because of bad information. Thanks for correcting those couple things, very appreciated!

      Are you able to explain how the Zigzagoon can be shiny but the starter isn't whilst soft resetting?
      I'm assuming its because the encounter values for both Pokemon aren't generated on the same frame - e.g Treecko values generated on frame 1, Zigzagoon frame 2? Or am I misunderstanding.

    Important Info I feel this video didn't point out:
    Soft reseting does not reset your frame count. To reset your frames completely to the beginning, you must Hard reset. (shut down your GBA)
    Frames start counting down as soon as you start the game up. (meaning frames are counting in the title screen)
    For random encounters, certain shiny frames only work with specific pokemon, using something called "Encounter slots."
    Example:
    If Duskull is in Encounter slot 1, and Shuppet is in Encounter slot 2, and the shiny frame is linked with Encounter slot 2, then you can only find a shiny Shuppet on that specific frame. In order to get a shiny Duskull, you'd have to find a different shiny frame that is linked with Encounter slot 1.
    In every area of the game where you can find Pokemon, there are exactly 18 encounter slots, even in an area like Mt. Pyre that only has 2 Pokemon.

    The bit about the battle recorder is news to me, very interesting. Has this been proven?
    Also, I thought it might be helpful to note that keeping your gameboy on for as long as possible while random encountering (keeping it plugged in even when not hunting) helps to keep the odds a bit more consistent. Most people probably only hunt for an hour or two a day, which, in theory, would restrict you to 25-50 shiny frames. Of course, you could potentially have even fewer to work with during the first 1-2 hour interval. Jumping around those same frames every hunting session is limiting in that access to shiny frames past those bounds is prevented.
    Think of it like this: A particular file may only contain 20 shiny frames within the first 2 hours, but a cumulative 80 within the first 4. The odds would be much lower within the 2 hour interval (1/21,600) than within all 4 hours (1/10,800). You can never know for sure how bountiful in shiny frames your spread is within any given interval of time (unless you use RNG Reporter which would defeat the purpose), so it's better to be safe than sorry.
    So yeah, the longer your game is on, the more natural your chances will be.

    • @shinycollector
      @shinycollector  Před 7 lety +11

      A different pokemon youtuber/shiny hunter told me about the battle recorder exploit and used a program to show the actually frame and how it skips, but I haven't seen anyone hunt using it successfully.
      Yeah this does make sense, but 20 frames isn't bad, and the frames might only be 1/21,600 if divided like that, but it's still technically 1/8192 just poor luck when generating in that fram (not necessarily explaining this for you, but for others that might read this and get confused) but likewise leaving it on for a bit might give you a worse span for frames, I guess really the best bet would be to vary back and forth between leaving it on and going from the start every now and again. Good insight though, definitely a good point to think about.

      You’ve been wasting time. A few might have different stats because frames are on 1/60 of a second intervals. However, you’ll at most find the same one or two hundred Groudon, and will most likely not have a shiny frame within those 100-200

The reason is that back in 2008-2009 I've came up with this theory and even written a guide to easily get a shiny. Yes you can get it. Because you're seeing mudkip I assume you're hunting in Ruby/Sapphire rather than Emerald. Is the battery dead or alive? If it's alive you're just very unlucky. If it's dead you're literally 1 frame of all of those times from getting your shiny starter. So you aren't doing anything wrong and either way, yes you can get the shiny. ShinyCollector98 thanks man! so basically the only thing that changes is the seed correct?

    • @shinycollector
      @shinycollector  Před 7 lety +5

      Zack Kazyak frames are just time markers. 1/60th of a second is how long a frame is. Same thing with videos as you've probably heard more often (60 fps) it means sixty frames per second so 1/60th of a second is one frame. Just a time marker for us. The seed starts at a constant, 0. And then the seed moves up per each frame, frame 1 is 0, frame 2 is 1, and so on. If the other factors in the formula are the same, the only variable is the seed, which is a constant based on time. So the seed does change, but the formula in the end is the same. The same factors stay. The factors will only change once you start a new game then ID and Secret ID in the formula change from the previous game file, however throughout the new games whole play through they stay constant to the new formula. So the seed does change the farther into the game you play, but when you start up the game next time, it'll start from the same starting point.

    Great video man. Been k/o ing linoones nonestop and not beimg able to understand the rng and how it worked gave me real bad hopes. So, odds do still repeat and do not just happen within a certain time window of leaving the game on if i am understanding your explanatiom fully.

    • @shinycollector
      @shinycollector  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I don’t fully get how you’re trying to word it, you lost me.
      Frames wouldn’t repeat unless you turn it off/on, but even if you do, it’s not likely you’d hit many repeats. Each frame is 1/60 of a second, so hitting the same ones accidentally would be rare

    • @shinycollector7
      @shinycollector7 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The way I think about it is, you want to try to play for longer periods of time if possible and vary the windows of time you play from after the game loads. You’re more likely to hit repeat frames if you, say, play for only 5 minutes every time, since you’ll only have that range of frames to hit

      You got that mostly right, but you don’t need to soft reset after any amount of tries, in fact you really shouldn’t because then you’re bringing it back to just your early frames instead of hitting new ones. WobbuffetBoy that's not at all true. You can hatch shinies in Emerald, basically what this video says is you just can't soft reset shinies in Emerald. I have some questions: Will the shiny frame always be the same frame every time from resetting?
    Is there always a shiny frame in every 8192 frames?
    Because if those two things are true, wouldn't it make it easier to shiny hunt in Pokemon Emerald by finding the shiny frame and making sure you always get encounters on that frame

    • @shinycollector
      @shinycollector  Před 7 lety +2

      Neefew _ yes they always appear in the same sequential order they originally appear in. No there isn't a frame per every 8192. Sometimes you'll go 50,000 without one (just like when shiny hunting). And yes you can still locate your frames. People do this and it's called RNG abuse. It abuses a glitch in the game and is seen by most people as illegitimate. Yes it makes it easier, however not everyone likes taking the easy way out. This is kind of the same difference of mindstate about it between methods hunter and full odds hunters I suppose, but this scenario also throws in a factor of ethics of abusing a game's glitch.

I can recall starting new game every 50~ encounters. I eventually got a game save where on a very early frame I started to run into the shiny zigzagoon in my battle so I knew I was right there! I did luckily land the shiny started on one of those early frames. Now I was performing SR to get my shiny starter. Now years later I turned the game on and I am standing in front of Rayquaza. Is it worth a shot to put a bunch of time trying to SR a shiny Rayquaza in that same early frame I landed my starter on? Basically repeat the SR on the early frame till I get lucky in the same method I got my starter. Do you have any advice or recommendations? Thank you so much for reading this and being an awesome Pokémon content creator!!!

      I'm starting a shiny hunt for a starter in Emerald and did you just Soft Reset and spammed A to get to the bag to get your starter and reset after 50 tries? I've seen everywhere that you have to like wait for the sign, I wanted to know if I can just be spamming to open the bag cause trying to hit the sign right is causing me problems

    I'm so glad I've come across this video, I've done at least 2,000 soft resets on my ruby save (with the internal time issue) I guess I'm late, but this helped a ton, thank you

      Joezeff better late than never, but yeah I'm glad you found this before the hunt went too much longer. As soon as you change the battery on Ruby you're good to go back at it, or if it's an interactable pokemon like Rayquaza you can do run aways still

      ShinyCollector98 awesome, I didn't even know the battery was possible to change, thanks for the help once again

    I’ve hunted for my shiny starters in emerald and found two torchic’s... so what does that mean?

    Hey! Back at this video again since you helped me obtain my shiny Mudkip on Emerald 2 years ago. With me having an early shiny frame, will the early shiny frame ever leave my save file over years of time? I saved in front of Rayquaza to do SRs with my early frame and haven’t went back to hunt him in 2 years. Is it still possible to hunt him after so long? Also not sure if RAs are better even if you have an early shiny frame

      Howdy! No, it will never “leave” the save. Emerald’s frames are locked which is its whole problem.
      You could get the shiny rayquaza from soft resets, but since you know you have an early shiny frame and would be targeting that intentionally, it’s more along the lines of RNG manipulation at that point. If you care about it being more random and shiny hunted then I would suggest runaways. But both are options, totally up to you 👍🏼

    Sorry if you mentioned this in the video, I might have missed it. But does this also apply for eggs? Or can I do the egg method like normal as if its in ruby/sapphire?
