Currently Inked for August 20, 2023: Unpacking the D.C. Pen Show Haul (Plus a Few Other Things!)

- My apologies for a somewhat prolonged absence this month! As you all know (or will shortly be aware from today's video), I spent most of the first week of August attending the 2023 D.C. Pen Show, which was by far the largest pen show I've ever attended in terms of both number of vendors and attendees. Turns out I lost my voice after three days of trying to carry on conversations in a loud, very dry ballroom. I'm feeling much better, and I'm back with a new "Currently Inked" video just in time to leave for the San Francisco Pen Show later this week!

Hi! Pen newbie here hopes to go to a pen show one day soon. Just a little tip for dry throat in a area where air is dry also…trying bring some cough drops…especially the citrus ones! They work I have severe asthma and allergies and it works when water stops doing it’s magic! Glad you are on the the way back to health before this next show…thank you for including the links! The turquoise and red pen caught my eye.
I am a huge fan (and customer) of Ray Jones wood boxes. I know he was at this pen show and other shows as well. I wish he was getting more love from our pen community. I like Toyooka Craft boxes but as they are manufactured as opposed to Ray’s handmade boxes. I hope we could show more love to the individual makers.
I think it’s a matter of taste and personal preference. I’m familiar with Ray’s work and they’re wonderful but his boxes are just very different and the Toyooka design tends to appeal to me more.
I agree! I picked up one of Ray’s smaller pen boxes at the DC show and I find myself admiring it often. I also have the 5 drawer Toyooka Craft box. The quality of Ray’s boxes are superior in my opinion and truly unique. The only gripe (albeit minor) I have about Ray’s boxes is the dividers are too tall, making it a little more challenging to get a pen out.
I like Ray Jones’s boxes very much. I have a 20-pen version on my desk. It inspired me to up my pen collecting game so I’d have pens as beautiful as the box they’re in. The woods he uses are so striking and unusual. Unfortunately, he doesn’t come to the Dallas pen show, the one in my “neighborhood”. When I bought mine, his website claimed that he had nothing in stock, and when I messaged him he sent me some pictures of what he had. It would be so much easier if I could see his stock in person or if his website were more forthcoming about what he actually has in stock.
Toyooka Craft boxes are nice, but they aren’t as striking as Mr. Jones’s boxes. They seem a lot like a lot of other boxes, except more nicely put together.
Do those Daedalus pens come with those ebonite feeds, or is/was it an upgrade?
I believe if you purchase the calligraphy nib, then the ebonite feed is included. Otherwise you receive a standard JoWo nib unit.
Interesting that you plan on staining your grip section on that micarta. That's very different than how I'd approach it.
It’s going to stain anyway over time and there’s no real point in avoiding the stress or worry about it!
