2022 Specialized Allez Sprint review

- There's a new Allez Sprint on the block. And the unapologetically race focussed aluminum platform has arrived at a time when criterium racing is once again bursting with interest.
First introduced in 2015, the original Allez Sprint quickly became a bike with a cult-like following amongst Red Hook racers with its combination of aero tube profiles, a stiff structure, aggressive geometry, and an attainable price point.
The new 2022 Allez Sprint doesn’t stray too far from that original recipe, but it's a wholly revised machine, and now an effective replica of the company’s flagship Tarmac SL7 race bike. And what comes without surprise, it’s disc-only.
Our Australia-based Senior Tech Editor Dave Rome has been riding and wrenching on the new Allez Sprint over the past fortnight, just enough time to get a good understanding of what the new alloy race bike excels at and where it doesn’t. This review covers what’s new, the technical details to know, and how it performs.

Insane prices. Got my 2020 Allez Sprint with 105 for $1900. Still a lot of coin for alloy/105 but I race criteriums. They jacked up the price by $1100!! These price increases are becoming just stupid.
But the framesets have always been between $1500-1750
I got a new 2020 Venge Pro AXS for $800 less than the new AXS Allez 😂 I hope no one buys this, absolutely insane.
Yeah, def taking advantage of the current economic situation and will probably blame it on inflation. Inflation is real, and most likely higher than the current CPI rate, but it feels more like a cop out these days from these big names
@@KokoFixed Spesh’s prices have been coming up a lot since 2013ish, they’re multiple generations of Tarmac/Venge ahead of the inflation curve.
Just got mines for $1825. Until people ride this bike they won't know how good it is.
I'm so glad I own the previous ver. Allez sprint
same here
So glad I own a CAAD10 😁
Yours isn't a super allez sprint . It suck therefore
@@moserroman2083 i wouldn't be surprised if you are being serious
i'm glad i own a 2010 allez elite. thing rips and is as fast as a load of carbon bikes. so much snobbery and pretentiousness in the bike industry
Your channel shines out brightly compared to the other big ones with bike related stuff. Truely good and honest stuff you were presenting in these 12 minutes.
Good review David but I just bought a brand new Canyon Endurace AL 7.0. WITH complete Shimano 105 groupset, carbon fork and seatpost, Selle Italia saddle, DT Swiss alloy rims and Continental Grand Prix tires for $1,550. HALF PRICE!!!
Hold up, Endurance AL 7 is around $1800, where did you get that price? From their outlet?
Canyon bikes are amazing value, but so hard to find them in stock :(
Well done! Good deal
But you don't have those specialized logos...
@@zzMigMitzz that's the price in euros most likely, try the Scott speedster, trek domane or Ribble for a bike under 2k, unfortunately they aren't as good to race as the card 13 or Allen but great deals
@@galenkehler 1.5 grand to the bike another 1.5 grand to the brand :D
Specialized is high if they think people are going to tolerate them selling an aluminum frame with 105 for 3 grand. You can get a caad13 with rival axs for the same price. Insane.
S-jerks will lap it up 😂
I got CAAD10 with 105 for $550aud about 1yr before covid hit 😂. Good enough for crit racing (with carbon wheels swap)
Nah man most won't mind
It’s pretty much sold out
They are out of stock, people bought them... The plan worked.
Nicely reviewed thanks.
Coming from mountain biking, road bikes always seem like a ripoff... 3k for an alu bike with mid range parts?
As a roadie, I can assure you, that we feel the same about those new releases 😅
Specialized in particular seems to have a cult following, so they can charge whatever price they want, and people will still line up to buy it. It's like the Starbucks of the bike world. I just don't get it.
The whole industry is a rip off haha
this is ripoff no doubt about that
ikr.... with that cost you can get a really good mountain bike
Seatstay welds look positively grotesque. I would have thought by now they would have found a way to hire a decent welder for the task... It looks nothing like a “smart” weld.
Oh it’s smart alright, you just got the receiving end of that smartness all wrong.
Weld looks like those science videos where they put some dust on a vibrating table and it makes these 3D protruding shapes. Truly outstanding work
If I ever had this frame I'd strip the paint, soften those welds, and recoat.
@@Megadeth6633 Boggles the mind why Specialized chose not to do it?!?
@@edthelizzard money that's it. If you want guarantee in quality and precision you need bespoke frames. No brand can offer you perfect jobs
If you watch the marketing on the "smart weld" process, the smart aspect is that they can cheapen the welding.
Basically anyone can weld it blindfolded without causing a safety risk, saving a ton of cost in labour.
Those cost savings are then passed on to the shareholders.
Very well said, Thank you for sharing this wonderful information. Now i love that bike. 🥰
I'm using merida scultura 300 2018 with navy blue paint job, never stop loving it!
In the perpetual game of where on the Norther Beaches / Upper North Shore did Dave film - I can finally get one :-) Looks like the bulk was filmed at JJ Hills reserve in Terrey Hills right beside the BOM watcher station.
Haha...$4k AUD for an alloy 105 bike....specialized are definitely smolin crack these days...and headset cable routing is a hard pass for me....#rimbrakesforthewin
I own the original Allez Sprint, modelled after the Venge. I really like my Sprint. I doubt the claims of the huge difference in aerodynamics but the new model is definitely on my “to be considered” list. I built my bike from a frame and would probably do the same again.
I’m sure it’s a good bike. But for that price you get better deals on full carbon bikes. Canyon Ultimate with 105 for example, seems way better value. Otherwise, great vid.
buy an older tarmac at the price point lol. Allez sprint is just riding the coattails of it's predecessors, much like the CAAD13.
@@mrbuddha5263 exactly I just got a tarmac sl6 with rim brakes which is light as a feather for only 6 k with dura ace and carbon wheels
I have the same color frame in a very similar AXS build. This is a great bike.
What is the front chainring size and rear cassette range? Looking to a similar build.
Ouch to that weight for a 52cm frameset, guess all those welds and shaped tubes really add to the weight... My CAAD13 2022 model in 56cm weighed in at 1325g with hanger, all bolts. Nice to see threaded BB but wish they smoothed out the welds, it would have the icing on the cake.
That's the beauty of aluminum bikes. The welds reminds you what's the bike is made.
Awesome welding, real space technology !
I had a steel Tange Prestige Specialized Allez way back when I did club racing as a youngster
I had a '93 Specialized Allez - lugged steel and it was one of the best bikes I owned. Only reason why I sold it was because of the size being too big. I'm still on the lookout for the same frameset in my size.
Thanks for the video all blokes need to get riding
Is it possible to make my 2020 allez fully internal cable routing? by swaping by headset bearing into the new one?
No room for the cables inside the headtube.
Imagine spending $1000 more than an Emonda ALR for this welding monstrosity.
Emonda is $1150... $1700-1150=$1000?
Is that good or not? Which is better?
I can afford it bro
I rather pick Spez over Trek
and as for practicallity
Alloy over Carbon.
carbon is Overrated
@@rowancall2879 This bike is $3000 in the US for the Allez Sprint Comp. Comparable Emonda ALR is $2300. $700 difference...not worth it IMO
Just bought an alleyz specialized almost new for 100$ but the tires were flat and my pump didn’t work on it :(
Is the head tube bigger in circumference than the old Allez Sprint? Wondering if that has changed.
I think it is, the second-generation now runs the same headset bearings as the Tarmac SL7, but they sit in cups that are press-fit into the head tube. Basically a zero-stack headset.
Word has it Stevie Wonder done the welds
Everyone hating here didn’t race/ride the original Allez Sprint. Even if it’s „only“ as good as the old allez sprint I would be more than happy to pay for the frame at 1700USD.
The original allez sprint is hands down my fave bike ever - and I own an Sworks SL7.
The often called „harsh“ ride quality makes it SUPER fun and agile. It’s not faster than carbon but certainly feels like it.
I can’t wait to test ride this new version even though I am sad to see there is no more rim brake :(
Of all the Specialized road bikes I got to ride (mostly short test spins), the Allez Sprint is one of my favourites. Not only does it match my riding style and bike spec, it actually matches my personality most closely. It really is like a second extension of myself in the form of a bike.
I'm eager to test ride this new one on my next day off.
There’s no way that a Allez is that much heavier. I called specialized and they told me that the S works SL7 weighs 1.69 kg and the regular SL7 is 1.87 kg both in a 56. But the Allez frame set weighs 1.5 kg but that is in a 54. The representative did not have numbers for a 56 but he estimated that it would be around 1.9 kg. So the Allez does not weigh .5 kg heavier than the tarmac but rather it weighs approximately .2 to.1 kilograms heavier than the tarmac SL7. so if you are that concerned about weight, you could get the aluminum frame and become a weight weenie and get it to the same weight as the carbon SL7 with no problem. And by the way, add a much cheaper price where are you don’t have to worry about replacing the frame when you crash. Even with crash replacement, you still have to come up with $3000.
Is there enough room for the bend in cables if stem is slammed?
There definitely is.
Things I like:
-bottom bracket area looks mint. Stiff and simple, just like your husband. 😉
-paint is badass as per usual
-good clearance for some big ass wheels and tires
-simple seat clamp
-looks "aero enough" (though I thought it was "everything")
Things I hate:
-"most complex headtube" is the laziest piece of marketing. If there is nothing better than that about it why hilight it?
-internal cabling is cool, but the I wish they had carried over the shrouded way they did it on the sl7, or at least tucked it under the stem better.
-killing off a alot of the aero shaping is starting to converge everything back to the one sl7 shape and seems like a bid to reduce SKUs and navigate supply chain issues rather than make a better individual bike. The upside of this is being to more readily get replacement parts.
-price is a bit higher for the basics but I guess that's everything now.
Overall a good effort and sure that people who buy it will enjoy, but nothing about this shows us the future of practical race bikes, kinda disappointed tbh. I'm so grateful to have my 2020 Venge and Allez!
Enjoy especially the one called LTD for €7500 lol
Do a head to head of CAAD13 vs Allez Sprint please
Please tell me which stem are you running on your allez or which stem i can use on it… At first i thought that i can actually use the stem specifically builded for Roubaix but i had recently found out that i can’t😢
The Future Stem's bore is smaller than 1 1/8 inches, so it's only compatible for Specialized bikes with the Future Shock cartridge.
Any 1 1/8-inch stem can fit on the new Allez Sprint.
@@yonglingng5640 thanks bruv preciate it
First Aluminium Superbike?
They having a Laugh 😂 😂
PELIZZOLI made aluminium super Bikes back in the 90s..
Coppi K3, TIG Welds that are super smooth, Aero and Stiff, as a Japanese bullet train..
Better than most of the Carbon Frames available today...
Where are you? Terry Hills?
Can I run R7020 with full cable housing?
Never mind it was answered in the video.
So they made the Allez Sprint less aero and more expensive than the previous version?
Heavier yes
Less aero ? Don't think so . At least compared to the previous disc version . With the more aero rim brakes and similar wheelset that could be a good test one vs the other
@@moserroman2083 if you listen carefully in the test they say it is x seconds faster than the original Allez Sprint, they did not compare it to the previous model or at least don’t tell the results. With the Venge being more aero than the SL7 i don’t see how a bike that is replicating the SL7 shapes is more aero than the one utilizing shapes and Seat post from the Venge
Faster if you averaging 78km/h you forgot to add lol
@@JanKowalski-pe9lo don't be so slow pls
@@VanillaSky23ffm the previous model in rim then disc was the only allez sprint up to this new one . The older version weren't sprint
Can you explain why your size 52 bike is heavier than my size 60 CAAD 13?
Question is, what parts are YOU riding with? Full carbon? Standard or über lightweight carbon?
@@yonglingng5640 My CAAD 13 is on carbon everything and it is 1kg lighter than his cute tiny 52 bike. If my CAAD was size 54 it would be UCI illegal.
@@stephen4347 Any of those carbon parts classed as über lightweight? I'm talking those that are too light for heavy and aggressive riders, like Darimo, Schmolke Carbon, THM, Carbon-Ti.
@@yonglingng5640 I wouldn’t waste money on those. I stand at 195 cm and I lift weights 🏋🏾♀️. I use standard carbon from Zipp. Any carbon will do to be honest even those eBay and Ali express gets the job done for me. Plus I swapped out the chainring for lighter aluminum cranks.
Thumbs up for the review (not the bike)
If they make an aluminum version of the Tarmac, they should make a steel version of the Aethos.
The only problem is the frame price. Im waiting for this new model allez sprint. But the price I feel that better i keep my preview version .. so sad to expensive for poor people like me
For the price.. that welding mark should be more better looking...
I have a straight gauge ti frame (Seven cycles) that weighs a few grams less than this frame. I'd prefer a late 90's, early 00's Cannondale CAAD 3/4, over this frameset. The Cannondales would be lighter too.
btw how tall are u?
just built one, Ultegra setup, roval cl50, etc
cost me $5500 for an aluminum bike but I just love the road feedback.
how tall are u?
Aing hayang pisan ieu sapedah tapi mahil euy 😍
The weight of this bike is 17 pounds?
That is a good looking bike. But I would rather have a gravel bike. The color is beautiful.
Was this build by Giant for Specialized?
Specialized frames are made in Merida's factory. Trek's frames are the ones made by Giant.
I don't like the look of those welds
"Dumb" welds
@@richardggeorge "Smart" because it was a scheme for them to make more money for a subpar product compared to its previous release. Lol
Tank
Curious how tall you are to be on a 52cm
I was looking at offloading my rim brake Allez Sprint frameset for a disk version.....Not at these prices!!!! I've owned many Specialized MTBs and road bikes but now it's hard to justify the amount of coin for their products.
Coming to a bike shop near you in 2025!
@Cain Dingle Boxing doesn't matter, it's aluminum
The bike industry has gone insane. Creating solutions to problems which don't exist in an effort to keep the customer interested. Next year's thing will be a 10kg aero bike which is now 16% faster and 24% stiffer, with the hope that it'll maybe get down to 8kg in future incarnations.
You think this is crazy, look at the world of Golf haha
Well said
Next video?...Caad13 vs Allez Sprint vs Emonda ALR.
is this bike fast?
Isnt this just an aluminium tarmac?
Short answer, yes. At least it's slightly easier on the wallet, but still, not cheap by any means.
I never expect Specialized to revive the Allez Sprint. Looks a lot more appealing now.
Those welds though. They can do better. And the price, they are really pushing it.
I don’t enjoy riding alloy bikes.
I use an Emonda ALR with carbon Zipp components in winter. It’s a huge slog compared to BMC TMSLR01 I use in the warmer months.
I’m just not convinced
just ride more LOL
They are a nice bike but a bit heavy, esp the wheels and tyres. My CAAD10 is 3kg lighter than a standard 105 emonda but frame probably doesn't dent as easily
You haven't tried riding other great aluminium models yet, like the Cannondale CAAD12.
Lmao I will drop you like a sack of potato on my 5.9kg caad12.
“A bad carpenter blames the tools”
@@11-inch WTF he owns both carbon and AL bikes and just made a comparison…
Maybe if you work hard enough you’ll be able to afford a proper carbon bike, too! Then you can relate :)
don't like a long/low fit? Go 1 or 2 cm shorter for the stem and use an extra spacer or two. Sorted.
"innovate or die" the innovation is "S-WELDS'
The price is absolutely atrocious
"Dropped chain stays"? Nice...
Specialized thinks they're Apple with their prices

caad 12 is the best alloy ever ... end of discussion.
Cervelo Team Soloist is the best alloy ever - there I fixed it for you.
Fight me bro :D
Agree.👍🏾💯% I have a Caad8 and that's a rocket.
@@DendrobiusAU What's the max. tire clearance on this bike? 25 mm tires on 15 mm internal rim width?
Don't get me wrong, I personally run this setup and I don't plan to run wider tires unless I'm getting so old to need added compliance. Because a wider internal rim width can widen a tire of the same width, this is a concern for older bikes that want to be paired with newer wheels that are usually wider than before.
You’re both wrong, it’s the Santa Cruz Roadster
@@stephenboshears4832 Absolutely right dude!! I remember 15 years ago some of my teammates had that bike and it was ahead of its time.
Aluminum why? If its so awesome why do you need a carbon seat post, carbon fork , carbon rims?
Aluminium is more resilient when it comes to impact-resistance. This is why you may have heard some riders swear by aluminium cockpits.
used Trek for $300 USD with Sora. Can go 23 miles in an hour without TT equipment. it's good enough for weekly workouts......not going pro.
Allez Sprint LTD - SRAM Force eTap AXS 1x 7500€ in germany.
If the bicycle industry continues like this, it could be that many companies will soon go down the drain.
They just set ridiculous prices ONLY.
See Ultegra Di2 12-speed and co.
I also have to say that I have owned a relatively large number of bikes, but it has never been as bad as the workmanship is at the moment.
You can buy bikes that are over 5k euros and they are then processed like a hardware store bike.
Alone design errors with fork shafts and Co. It's 2022, end customers have been buying carbon bicycles for well over 20 years. And the manufacturers are still not able to build well-made carbon frames.
The industry earns more than enough, you can ask for it.
the $6.800 price tag is ridiculous .. there are specialized tarmac SL7 with lower price tag and comparable Groupset.. why buy a alloy copy when u can get “real deal”
Chainring tooth?
A 1511g frame for this price is disgusting! It is basically made to be heavier intentionally to give way to the carbon tarmac pro, and the tarmac pro itself is also made worst off(weight-wise) than previous generations to sell the Sworks. I own the last version allez sprint disc, will never "upgrade" it
The internal welding looks quite bad
RedHook Crit 2017 edition or bust
Well, if you're buying Specialized you're mostly buying the brand image nowadays... Next time they are gonna weld from the Z-axis and say it's the newest flipflop tech!
Pity, but there are people who love wasting money
It’s a hoot to ride. Best comment in the video
3K for an aluminum bike with mid level parts and no internal routing is stupid. What’s even worse is we’ll be seeing these frames on FB marketplace for double the retail price
If you call this external routing, chances are, you've never seen a generic steel road bike (and my aluminium bike) before.
" SMART WELD TECHNOLOGY " 😂 is it a joke ?
seems like the guy bout' to laugh everytime he talks about the joints and weldings 😂
This bike looks great but the price doesn't make sense. At $3,000 for a 105 bike, it should be under 8kg. Instead is is basically 9kg
I love what they are doing, but I'd rather buy an old shiv and change it the cockpit, making a less expensive bike with the same quality
The geometry won't be right. You're trying to adapt a triathlon frame for road cycling.
@@yonglingng5640 everyone always says that without looking at the reach, stack and effective top tube
that welding though... WEAK!
and frame 1511g weight? hahahahahaha
Okay from the top, but without reading this time.
Yo is he really saying Allez like that?
The French are judging you rn
At this price point - grind those welds, roadies are vain c.. Canyon do it, Cannondale did it, it can be done. I'll use my cash to thank you Specialized. ^.^
Overpriced. That logo alone costs an extra $1K
Cheesecake.
the welds are so ugly.
Sorry... frame set builds are cost prohibitive. Specialized knows this, which is why they price their frames w/ zero financial breaks in mind. In fact... frame up builds often cost more than a complete bike, which makes zero sense.
The thing with frame-up builds is you get the exact spec you want right from the get-go. A saddle that fits you, the right handlebar width, the right stem length, your ideal crankarm length and a lot more.
I never settle with factory-specced bikes shortly after I started cycling, where my first bike wasn't even a road bike. There'll always be something to change on such a bike.
No rim brakes, no buying for me. Disc brakes ruined the look, the weight and the aerodynamic of the bicycles.
Is someone at specialized sniffing glue?
Specialized bikes are ridiculously overpriced.
And those welds are hideous.
Too expensive
If you want the ugliest bike at your local crit get an Allez
Just bring back old Allez, affordable and agile roadbike..
The regular Allez is still in production, this is not its replacement and has never been.
Al-um-MIN-ium..........the way Brits pronounce it cracks me up!
What kind of clown paint scheme is that?
This whole industry is a circus show I tell ya. 🤡
So... horrible value, overweight bike with harsh riding characteristics. I somehow don't see a line forming for this one. But thanks for the chuckle at "fastest alloy bike", that's a good one!
@D. W. Ah yes, good point. I forgot not every bike is intended for mamils such as myself!
Did Specialize bribe every road cycling reviewer?? Perhaps you haven’t noticed that the massive welds near the head tube have been universally panned as hideous? That an aluminum size 56 frame with no pedals weighing over 19 pounds isn’t desirable to many? That $3k for an aluminum 105 group set with a mediocre-at-best stock wheelset is actually too expensive for what you get? Does this mean that the bike is bad? No! But missing these big picture points is annoying dude …
@D. W. I just mean that these 3 points I’ve seen raised by many folks-and aside from the price point, the chunky welds are a close second in complaints. But like I wrote, doesn’t mean it’s not a nice bike. No doubt it’s got a lot going for it. Just would be nice to see the reviewers say what Joe Public is thinking, too.
@D. W. we will have to agree to disagree on whether this constitutes a ‘technical review’ 🍺
