  • Hello viewers,
    This video is a request video made from one of my subscribers.
    note this is not a repair video. Just on the location of the sensor
    The 3800 Series III engine is considered a robust engine that is easy to work on. But some things are not so easy. The Knock Sensors are one of those things.
    Technically, that is only half true. The front knock sensor (which is what this video is requested for and based on) is fairly easy. The rear knock sensor is a different story
    This video shows the location of the front sensor, and discusses, but does not show, the rear.
    This was done on a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. Should cover all 3800 Series III engines, including
    2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix
    05 06 07 08 09 Buick Lacrosse and Allure
    2006-2008 Buick Lacrosse

    Guess I'm the lucky one. I have this exact engine in my 05 grand prix and what do you know it just through an error code p0332 (The rear knock sensor) 😳 any suggestions on the best coarse of action? You have one of the only videos on CZcams that even shows you the location of the 2 sensors. Any advice you might be able to give I would be grateful. Very informative video, subbed immediately 👍

    • @NexusAuto

      Oh no...I feel for you.
      unfortunately, I do not have direct experience wit the rear knock sensor, so I have no personal tips. I have discussed with other GP friends in the past, and it is a terrible job to do. Sorry, have to be honest.
      Technically speaking, the service manual says you need to actually disconnect and separate the transmission from the engine to do this, as it is directly in the way! I know, crazy.
      From those I talked to, the let me know it can be done without that, but it takes an EXTREME amount of patience. You have to go in with a wrench, and ever so slowly, in essentially 1/16th turns, move it bit by bit until it moves freely enough to just get 2 fingers in there to spin it the rest of the way.
      Here are 3 very important tips the I heard as well
      -Although the slow turns are tedious, the first hardest part is getting the leverage to get it turning to begin with. Once it is 'broken' free, it will likely spin, just takes a long time
      -Many wrenches do not fit, nor does a ratchet. Some have let me know they had to grind down a wrench to fit. But not everyone had this issue. I guess this depends on the wrench manufacturer and size.
      -Last, and most crucial, knock sensors need to be torqued correctly. If it is slightly too lose or tight, it will get the ECM a false reading and it may still think it is defective, when in fact it could be a difference of a few ft lbs. Some guess as they tighten, some did trial and error.
      I know this info makes it sound like a giant Pain in the ass, and it is, but it can be done.
      Hope this helps give some insights. Thanks for the sub too, I very much appreciate it!

    What about the ac pressure switch where's that located. And what's the symptoms of bad knock senor

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  Před 3 lety +1

      A bad knock sensor is going to cause the engine to be unable to regulate unusual knocks from combustion, and the ECU can become confused. It can throw off the timing of combustion, and in extreme situations, can cause very poor combustion. This can lead to carbon build up, poor intake temps, bad fuel economy, a loud tick from the engine,and more. They don't go often, but they are problematic if they go.
      I'll take a look into making a video on the pressure switch location as well. Keep an eye out.

    Where is the location of the fuel filter ? I have to change mine, I have a 08 Grand Prix base

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  Před 3 lety

      That is some unfortunate news. In mid 2005, GM moved the fuel filter from its own part sitting just underneath the driver side door, on the underbody of the car, to an all in one unit as part of the fuel pump. There is no standalone fuel filter anymore. If you need it changed, you have to change the whole fuel pump assembly, which is inside the gas tank

    I have an 08 randprix 175 k miles. been a great car so far as long as i can keep the field rats from chewing on my wires..grrr i have the PO332 code for rear bank 2 knock sensor mechanically the car runs good
    another code that pulls up with it is P2430 secondary air injection sensor pressure circuit. Te guy at autozone said he wouldn't worry about it as long as the engine runs good. he said it mainly for emission control. I live in Oklahoma so we don't have emission testing requirements It look like it would be a real pain in th butt to change out. have you done any videos on this code? for the 3800 series three engine. thanks for your reply and Happy Thanksiving everybody!!

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  Před 2 lety

      I haven't done a video on these codes, but I can confirm the rear knock sensor is one of the hardest things to work on at home. It is in a terrible spot. Your autozone guy is right...it is really only for emissions. However, it should be noted that if the knock sensor does give a far off enough reading, it can actually cause the car to run really rough, as the car will get confused on how much air/fuel ratio it needs. Officially, I always say to repair any fault. Unofficially, if the car is running with no issues, you're ok. If the car still running rough, it may be a primary cause.

      @@NexusAuto thanks for the reply. I did check with my local repair shop today he said the labor guide calls for 7 hours repair and dropping the transmission to get to it to replace it. The sensor is about $57. so I am not going to do it for the time being since my car seems to be running ok- same with my smog pump code $700 quote to replace it so I am skipping that repair LOl. glad we have no emissions test requirements in Oklahoma :) if Joe Biden wants to send me a personal check to repair both issues have him reach out to me here LOl

    I have a bad one on the back side can I do it myself???

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  Před 3 lety

      Can it be done? Yeah. But it is giant pain! You will need a ton of patience to get it done, and some creativity. Unfortunately, it is mounted in a small spot a the back of the engine, and the transmission is mounted right up beside it.
      I kid you not...in the service manual, it says you have to remove the transmission to do it.
      There some discussions on the web on how it can be done without doing that, but I have yet to do it myself. This is why I did not film it at the time of this video.
      Unfortunately, the forums are not very descriptive, but they do give some tips and shows it can be done. If this sounds too much of a hassle, definitely get it done at a technician, but it will not be cheap.

    Hi
    I have a 06 grand prix gt supercharged
    120k
    It has a very random p0300
    I changed the plugs and wires at 80k
    Should I do them again
    Or just get it scanned at a dealer to know for sure
    It runs like brand new
    Zero missing at full or half
    Sometimes it idels chunky

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  Před 3 lety

      I would say to get it scanned. There is no good reason why your plugs and wires are bad after 40k of use. It is possible for sure, but unlikely. It could be anything from the knock sensor in this video, to intake manifold gasket leak (a common issue on this code), bad coil, etc. The chunky idle is probably from this random intermittent p0300. If it were me, I would be scanning first.
