The popular Murphy Radio
Murphy Radio was a British Manufacturer which manufactured Radio and television in Welwyn Garden City, England. It is ironical that Murphy had himself left the company in 1937 and formed another company. However, the radio brand got popular worldwide and in India too.
Who is the Murphy Radio Baby?
If you remember a cute and chubby toddler appeared in majority of print advertisements in 1970s and 1980s. He was the brand ambassador for Murphy Radio. The name of the baby is Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche. This cute Murphy Radio baby is now the husband of bollywood star of 80s Mandakini.
How did Murphy Radio approach the baby?
The Murphy radio baby was a three year old toddler when he appeared in the advertisement and became famous. As Kagyur was too young at that time, it is but natural that he does not remember anything about the shoot of Murphy Radio.
As the baby boy was identical to the girl who used to feature in their advertisements, the makers were looking for a similar kid. The earlier girl had unfortunately died and the radio makers were desperate for a replacement.
Their search ended with Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche who was living in Manali, Himachal Pradesh at that time with his parents.
If the Murphy radio baby was indeed so popular, why did he not appear in any other advisement?
It usually happens that when a child artist gets popular, he or she appears in multiple advertisements. This was not the case with Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche and there could be two reasons for the same.
One, at that time, the print and electronic media was in its infancy and majority of the advertisements were made using grown up women and men. The other main reason was that Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche is a Buddhist and his parents decided to send him to a monastery at a young age to become monk.
Since Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche was in the monastery for over 20 years, he was cut from outer world and hence if any advertisements came his way, it was but natural that Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche could not take up any.
What is Murphy radio baby doing currently?
Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche lives currently in Mumbai with his wife Mandakini and his children. He is into the creative designing industry only and is now planning to co-direct a movie. The movie will be titled “The Lost Country”.
Kagyur Tulku Rinpoche intends to highlight the Tibet issue internationally and can use this movie as a medium to share his thoughts on this topic.
What was the tagline of Murphy Radio?
You can judge the popularity of Murphy radio from the fact that its tagline was sung by famous singer Mohammad Rafi during that era. The tagline was “Murphy ghar ghar ki Raunak, tarah tarah ke Murphy Radio, la dete hain ghar mein Jaan”.
Did Murphy radio get popular in recent times?
Though the Murphy radio baby is no more associated with the erstwhile brand in any way now, a reference of the brand in 2012 did evoke memories of those who used this radio. The term Murphy Radio and Murphy Munna were used in the title song of popular movie Barfi. It suggested that the mother of the baby at that time wanted a child like Murphy Baby. The name of main lead character Ranbir Kapoor Barfi also seems to be derived from the word Murphy.
The iconic brand of Murphy might not be available any longer but the memories associated with the radio will always remain alive in hearts of those who loved it.

मैं तो यादों में खो गया हूँ और अभी भी वहाँ हूँ. कभी संयोगवश पुरानी फिल्म पत्रिका या अखबार हाथ आते थे और मर्फी रेडीओ का विज्ञापन देखते थे तो खयाल आता था कहाँ है अब वो मुन्ना! उसका उत्तर आज मिल गया. जैसे के मनमोहन देसाई की फिल्म में खोया हुवा भाई बरसो बाद मिलता है वैसे ही मर्फी मुन्ना बरसो बाद मिला. आभार×मिलीयन बार.

Nostalgia. दिल खुश हुआ.. गुजरा हुआ जमाना आता नही दुबारा.. कितनी सुकून की जिंदगी थी. लायसन्स फी हर साल पोस्ट ऑफिसमे जमा करनी थी और उसका पासबुक था.. मिडीयम वेव पर आकाशवाणी के कार्यक्रम और शॉर्ट वेव पर बीबीसी, रेडियो सिलोन इत्यादी. शॉर्ट वेव के लिये लकडी पे लगायी हुई अन्टेना घर के बाहर लगानी पडती थी..
मर्फी बॉय खुबसुरती का चिन्ह था.. किसी भी खुबसुरत बच्चे को मर्फी बॉय कहते थे..
मर्फी बॉयने मंदाकिनी से शादी की, ये जानकारी बिलकुल नयी है..

I am 1968 born, as i was small girl in those days, i still remember my child hood like a new bloomed fresh flower 🌷 and still it's fragrance I can smell… and I can see the Murphy bachcha calender on the wall though it's long back… I know when my father brought slim Murphy radio on rickshaw… we children shouted Murphy aa gaya , Murphy aagaya… So beautiful experience was that , and that calander bachcha was like family member ...I use to be so happy watching it…

Murphy boy was on print media as well as I,ve seen his calendars also in late 60s...in yrs.72 to 73 pocket radios was the craze for cricket commentary...we had AIWA Transister in late 60s in the family..it was a intrigal part of our family picnics and vacations .

I have heard the Murphy tinkle on radio through out the gifts til the late seventies. Yes like you said i used to carry he Murphy box shaped heavy transistor in my hands for listening to running cricket commentary while going to work. Thanking you again BRL.

Loved this video. I remember the Murphy baby very well. I was born in the 70s. My mom had a picture of Murphy baby in her bedroom when she was carrying me . When I was born , I looked quite a lot like the Murphy baby. Those were the days. A simple , unhurried life. Even landline rotary dial phones were rare . TV entered Indian households in a big way in 1982 because of the Asian games.

Murphy, Phillips, Bush etc were popular radio brands.. The wooden box type radio sets were using Valve tech.. later transistors were introduced (which were light & handy/portable)... For radios people have to deposit rs 5-10 per yr. at Post offices..
