As lord Krishna said " To protect the righteous,to annihilate the wicked, and to re-establish the principles of dharma I appear on this earth,age after age."
As a Marathi bramhin I believe lord Vishnu himself came to protect us and we are still hindu just because of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
In Shree Shree Durga Saptashati Jaganmata also give promise to the world that :- इत्थं यदा यदा बाधा दानवोत्था भविष्यति |

Maharaj's KulDevi(Clan Goddess) was Tulja Bhavani. Not just Chhatrapati but it is a tradition in Kshatriyas that before going to war they used to take blessings from their Istha Dev/Devi or KulDev/KulDevi by means of simple Puja or some Tantric practice.
In the Mahabharata, Arjun also performed pooja as prescribed by Bhagwan Krishna to seek blessings of his KulDevi Maa Durga.
Even the 20th century great Indian Mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan credited his acumen to his family goddess, Namagiri Thayar (Goddess Mahalakshmi) of Namakkal.
So this type of divinity has been a normal thing in India since ancient times.

1) In Marathi Sant Sampraday parampara Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is known as VISHNU AVTAR
2) Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Himself wrote in his biography that He is Vishnu Avtaar who born as Shivaji to Sustain the Civilization... Thats why he called as CHHATRAPATI means the sustainer of the Civilization.
3) Whole Bhosle kul was SHAKTI UPASAK even Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj was SHAKTI PANTH DIKSHIT... he took the Diksha of Shakti panth.
4) in Sabhasad Bakhar (The granth which is written in Maharaj ji's existence)
