  • Hello there, this video is discussing the most recent two Fire Emblem games, Three Houses and Engage, and how they are weirdly bad at what the opposite is good at. I also discuss why anyone would want to play these games, and some history on what got us to this point.

Oof i love fire emblem, and those 1 dimensional characters will always hold a special place in my heart. Fire emblem awakening was one of the first games i really fell in love with as a kid. I need to revisit that wow its been a while. I haven’t finished the vid yet, but great stuff ❤

Great video. Engage really does have the better gameplay mechanics though it gets me feeling that the emblem rings perhaps offer a bit *too* much choice, the decision paralysis is real. I didn't find 3h tactics as boring as you're describing them. Thinking back though, I guess most of the tactics came from the character build choices, stuff you do in the monastery, whereas on the battle maps themselves how you progressed was pretty straightforward so maybe in that sense yea.
I kinda wish the next game they make falls somewhere in between the two and closer to some of the older games. A more streamlined experience with less side-stuff to do and allows you to get into the next level more quickly. But please for the love of all that is good, have better dialogue and character interactions than Engage. I don't even mind the tired evil dragon trope, just write it better.

Ya I find it odd that FE had already fit so nicely into it's own niche, so it sucks they had to change it up so much. Games seem to be doing that nowadays, maybe older gamers are just getting kids and whatever so they need new audience.

As someone who's completely obsessed with fire emblem I've played multiple times every game except 1-3.
And I must say you're missing some gems by not playing fe4 and fe5 (they're placed on the world, with 5 being a midquel) and seeing you liked 3h you're going to absolutely love those two. They stories are heavily political and dark as fuck.
You should also play fe9 based on the same arguments

@@superdude10000Hi, I'm jumping into this conversation eleven months after the fact to say you absolutely should play the Tellius games (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) if you haven't already. IMO they have a much more satisfyingly developed and mature world than Three Houses. While 3H has plenty of depth, its structure has always bugged me. I like the *idea* of no one path having all the answers, but sometimes that ends in a very unsatisfying way. (Ex. Edelgard's path ending without actually concluding her conflict with Thales and the Mole Men.) The Tellius games only have a fraction of 3H's story choices, but as a result you get a much more coherent story. And it might be personal bias, but I think Tellius tackles much more interesting ideas than 3H.

You did great at putting A feeling into words that I hadn't been able to articulate for myself. I've loved these games and your video does them amazing justice.
And to add a note about intelligent systems it seems like they definitely have been going through and trying to listen to player feedback over the years and that can't exactly be easy since there are definitely a few different camps sided on story should be more important or tactic should be more important and they clearly are not very good at getting pulled both directions. There's a strong chance they will just try and keep releasing story focused games and tactics focused games alongside each other. At the very least I hope they have enough success to keep going cuz I want to see how this series continues to evolve

This is a fantastic video! I didn't play 3 Houses because I simply couldn't fathom doing three separate playthroughs to get the full story. But I jumped on Engage and absolutely adored it. I think one thing to mention is that the main story itself is really corny but the individual character supports are excellent examples of that "shadow of a personality" writing you mentioned at the start of the video. They're tropey and not particularly in depth but it was just enough for me to get incredibly fond of a handful. If there's one thing Engage succeeded in doing, it was making me excited for the next fire emblem game

@@superdude10000each path is like its own alternate dimension since the lord characters don't meet Byleth. So you have to disconnect a bit from the characters you knew in 3 Houses.
The stories are ok, but it feels like the endings for each were written with the idea that there would be a DLC release that never happened.
One nice thing is that the battle camp is an EXTEMELY streamlined version of the monastery.

@@superdude10000I think three hopes is worth playing, despite abrupt endings that don't end the war for all of the routes. You learn even more about Fodlan, like about the relationship and history between Sereng and the kingdom, the fact that the Agarthians were at the battle you see in three houses opening, more about the Western Lord's in the kingdom and the politics of Count Rowe, how Edlegard tries to reform the empire without the Agarthians, a little about Claudes family, etc. I think it's fun enough.

As someone who could personally never really get into the series no matter how much I tried, for me, the whole problem regarding FE's storytelling has always been the sticking point for me, and both games serve to be perfect examples of why.
Three Houses tries to be this grand epic of three factions squaring off against each other but that ambition only serves to emphasise how limiting the FE structure is from the writing perspective and just how prone the series is to falling into predictable cliches. First, there's part 1, which is an utter mess that barely connects to the post-timeskip stories and only serves to fill up time that could have instead be used to tell a tighter story. Because in its current state, the story doesn't cut it. I only did the Blue Lions route, commonly agreed on to be the best-written one, but even then in my experience, it was severely rushed and I Dimitri's story ended up being one I've seen done better in other places before. It wasn't _bad,_ but I wasn't really invested in what was going on. Leaving all plot development to short post-chapter cutscenes also doesn't make things any better. And that's even without going into the problem with the side characters, who very much follow the FE tradition of quantity over quality for gameplay reasons, making it harder to get invested in this setting.
As for Engage, while 3H's problem is that its ideas were bogged down by the series' staples, Engage's problem is that it doesn't even try at all and jupms headfirst into pure anime trashiness. Big over-the-top attack animations everywhere, nostalgia summons because why not, character writing becoming even more flanderised than before, loud and bright character designs that were clearly not designed with a clear setting in mind and the most basic FE plot there is - the game is just so ridiculous that I grow numb to all of it.
Both, to me, serve to display FE's limitations from the writing perspective. Get too ambitious and you will start writing yourself into the corner. Don't be ambitious enough and you will become a boring slog because you are still, at the end of a day, a story-driven jRPG. That's why, of all the games I've played, the one I've enjoyed the most was Fire Emblem 7. The story there is nothing to write home about but it's consistently solid and grounded enough to make me want to keep going while not going too far with its ideas. Not my favourite game ever but it's for sure a much more consistent experience than either of these.

This was the intra-fandom discourse of which amongst FE Echoes:SOV and FE Fates was better, basically. Except in this case, it's more glaring in respect to the problems each games posed.
FE3H is serviceably difficult if I were to say so myself; at least there were a good variety of maps that I could say had me semi-strategizing. Engage while horribly bad (in terms of story) at least had an original premise to hinge upon and honestly, the weird past-characters-as-avatars schtick coulda been really great in the story if it was properly executed and with a tweaked plot they could have made it more than a weird gimmick.
On the other hand you have the Fates and Echoes superiority discourse. Fates (at least Conquest) probably had the best maps in the series but it had the worst stories in Conquest and Revelations and Conquest killed its best characters by making its characters' story personas so vastly different from their support convo personas (otherwise, they were really just... caricatures playing off of stereotypes). Then you had Echoes which objectively had the best story presentation and while it did lack supports, we had pithy and compendious convos that showed just enough of new facets to make them feel like they were more than their stats and attributes. But it had god-awful maps that felt like a chore to get through especially in the latter parts of the game. They were barren and empty and the boat levels and swamp levels felt so bad. Ugh.
I think they learned from all these flaws in FE3H though and I'm glad because I really enjoyed both Fates and Echoes for what they were. It's the most balanced game to date in terms of plot, difficulty, and characters. Even then though, the maps were on the same level as perhaps Awakening or Blazing Sword in terms of difficulty. Which is why I found Engage so weird...
In any case, I wonder when IntSys will finally hit their stride and make a game that doesn't feel imbalanced... the closest they got to that is with the Tellius series but even then, I've only played Radiant Dawn (and it unfortunately had no support convos which is a travesty because the cast really makes Fire Emblem feel like Fire Emblem) so I can't really say for sure.
I'm sorry for this long retrospective. I know none won't read this far but I just got wistful seeing as Nintendo recently cut off online functions for both the 3DS and WiiU and honestly, we FE fans owe a lot to the 3DS for reviving the series right when it was at its deathbed.

@@superdude10000 I don't like it. it's a tactical puzzle game, too simple, the game gives me too many hints and winks, I don't like it when a game, especially the tactical kind do that.
I tried many many other Japanese games, I love the Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles series, and i played Awakening when it came out.
I love it when a game is overwhelming me with mechanics and constantly hides everything from me and don't care to show me everything.
and I do get that when I install the mods that the fans got their source code on a golden plater, and when my copy of JA2 turns into "JA2 1.13+AI AR+SDO"
*(1.13 - the last official version was 1.12 {gold edition} that takes a lot of mechanics and refines them and then adds more.
+AI - is an extension that makes the AI go bananas at you,
AR - is a big expansion for the map, it's a huge overhaul of the original map and some other things, I haven't played enough
+SDO and extension that adds more weapons and characters, even though other mods did that as well),
      *
I get to experience some of the most freakiest tactical depths a game can give me.
      example:
      New XCOM Mechanic:
you aim, you shoot. it's calculated by an algorithm, which is essentially a dice roll, but it's all messed up and you can do only that much with only two actions points.
here's one mechanic from the vanilla:
Your Merc has a gun, he aim, he shoots.
the bullet that fired is generated in a 2D space, and evaluated in a the ballistic system that took its effect and if it were to miss it'll may hit anything or anyone else, including other enemies or civilians or even your mercs if you placed them in a line of fire.
Meaning: if you close to an enemy, you don't waste AP to aim harder, you just shoot shoot shoot and don't miss, because of the ballistic system.
sure you use a dice roll too but it's calculated by many nuances, not only the skills but Merc's overall experience, if they slept well, if moral is bad/good/excellent, are the individual merc has another merc in his team that he/she Loves or Hates, if their stance doesn't add too many penalty points to their aim, Injured and bleeding or injured but patched up and so on.
same extra steps taken for bullet penetration.
as the wounds and their placement on reducing your mercs pool of AP.
the base AP for a merc is 20-25 (dictated by age, fatigue, carried weight, skills, perks)
with the mod 1.13 the base AP pool is 90-100. yes. because there's so much stuff, the fans reevaluated the AP system, because the game has too many details now.
Do you understand the struggle, now ?
I gotta go rewatch Warlockracy's and JacquopoVimes review of the game now, because they just get it.

Frankly speaking, storywise both games got their flaws! While I liked the more MATURE 3Houses story was and it's characters, sometimes it DOES feel TOO Dark and the bloat of both gameplay, combat, ETC along with the story (four routes to get the ENTIRE story!) can hurt more then helps!
Engage is more lighthearted and focused! Which it does get hurt by Anime cliques which will provoke more then your usual. And the character's might have had some dimensions taken away then how it they were in 3Houses that essentially their back to being how they were before 3H but that can be to their advantage! I feel the 3H cast would be better if this WASN'T a route heavy game. Hell even the ROUTES and their interjections during story cutscenes their in (provided you're ON THEIR ROUTE) are done in a way that if you PERMAKILLED them, nothing is fully lost! Their nice, but you can't hite!
    If I compare though!
Story: Engage is alright in my opinion ONLY because they were LESS ambitious then. However I give Three Houses the win because I do dislike them deciding to push back that story ambition TOO MUCH and making NODS to FE6 with Roy being the only one who can S support by Alear being the only one who can do it! That annoyed me because I LOVED the paired endings! They had LESS characters then they did in Three Houses. So the potential for PAIRED endings was there! Just make a few character's unable to get an S rank! Like the Royals with each other (Even though you could still make them NON ROMANCE! Like I could see a Diamant x Ivy S rank being them working even HARDER to improve relations between Brodia and Elusia which have been DAMAGED because of Morion's ambitions! Or even Alcyrst x Hortensia being them working in their own fields to promote it in a different way! Their siblings will be the rulers! But they as the Second Prince/Princess! Or Fogado's supports with the other Younger Siblings improving Solm's relations with their Kingdom's!) It feels WEIRD because you have Etie being marked as Alfred's future fiancee by his mother, and Lapis OBVIOUS crush that Citrinne sees it and ENCOURAGES it as well with Alcryst! Yet their epilogues show nothing comes of it! Likely because of the chance Alear could S rank those two! Should have at least made their Epilogues CURRENTLY only happening IF Alear S ranks Alcryst or Alfred!) I mean parts of the story of Engage are hit and miss! I will admit after FORCING myself (ADHD and all) to watch EVERY cutscene in this game first run! I find myself in a second and beyond run ONLY skipping SOME cutscenes as a few of them ARE actually good and presented well (The Intro/Dream, Alear first summoning Marth and fighting that Corrupted! Chapter 7-9, Chapter 10 Battle Intro! Chapter 11-16 with a few exceptions, Chapter 17! Chapter 19-22, and pretty much the entire endgame! I found myself skipping LESS cutscenes then I did in three Houses! And in the case of three houses it's more "I've seen this before" then PURE hatred sans a few! Though those FEW are abit LESS then the ones I DO skip like the PLAGUE in Engage
Characters: Frankly I feel people are doing EXACTLY what they did in Fates with that "one dimensional" crap I hate so much! Face it! The only reason the 3H cast don't get the treatment is because Presentation and foresight which has BEEN in the series! Note how the Greil Mercenaries are set to NOT be too shown in the story of POR to avoid the situation of their DEATHS! The story even ACKNOWLEDGES if you got them ALL killed before the end of the first half ending with Greil's death and being saved by Galla! Only Elincia and Mist are immune to Permadeath! and Mist loses her immunity in Radiant Dawn! I really do feel LESS characters should have Plot Armor to Permadeath going forward storywise! Even the cast of 3H WILL die if "killed" in Chapter 11.) The character's are written pretty well for their purpose and people REALLY need to get off the META high horse in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME! The Early recruits are not as bad as they've always been! Just that the Mid Game Recruits are build in CASE they don't end up how you wanted them or lost them to Classic Mode so you have a replacement! 3H gives you many of them and they have SO MANY protections that it's rare to HATE any of them! I like Ashe, but it's agreed out of the GORDIONS in the game (who he IRONICALLY FITS, while Ignatz has Gordion's Green Hair) he is the WORST of them all! Bernadetta's Personal & Crest along with Ignatz skill sets AND Personal make them LEAGUES better then him! And I kind of view Leonie as the "traditional Bow Knight" you get in the series! AKA the UPROMOTED ONES like Rath, Sue, Sin, POR Astrid and technically Fogado in his starting Base Class! As let's be real, who DOESN'T take her down the Bow using Cavalier---->Paladin and MAYBE Bow Knight route when optimizing her! The game is outright TELLING you to go that route! And the later recruits CAN beat you're starters! Shamir is what Etie was SUPPOSE to be. Frankly to stop my ranting! I think the next Fire Emblem should LESSEN the amount of "Lords and Vessels" as I think people LIKED as shown in 3H the idea of POACHING characters like in the classic FE before the Switch era where you're recruits joined when you recruited them with the RIGHT character! I mean you can always make it "the right character" and the main lord to recruit them! Just make it "The right character" can get them EASY, while the Main Character would have to pay a price or something to recruit a few of them! A way to have a SAFETY NET in case you never USE that character or they get Permakilled. While not making it so "Oh hey let me join you just cause!"
I mean it comes down to your style! I think Engage's story MIGHT have been liked more a decade or so ago before everyone turned into a EDGELORD that thinks "Dark means GOOD" and have grown up to be ADULT edgelords! But that's just me! Frankly I will say Story is good! But let's be real, everyone saying "a good story makes you come back to a game" is confusing Video Games for Movies again and/or lying their pants off KNOWING they can press Start and get to the "BATTLE" without having to watch the scenes again! Seriously Intelligent Systems is NOT going to take too much of your criticism's to heart if you aren't in their native Japan! They have the LARGEST influence then the American audience! At best the OUTSIDER opinion will be NOTED in how they Handle translations! so whine more about that.
But through my large ass ranting at the clouds! I still will never get this "Nintendo vs Sega" war people seem to have where they get on people like ME's case for looking at them in confusion, then getting back to indulging in BOTH things their fighting over because it's kind of STUPID. Some FE will have stuff you hate, some will have what you like! Good video by the way

How do you categorize the gatcha games and their effect on the series?

    • @superdude10000
      @superdude10000  Před 9 měsíci +1

The gatcha game's success is partially the reason why Engage even is the way it is, so if you're not in anime plots, that's not good. It's made IS a boatload of money through typical gacha transactions, but I am not a fan of live service nor microtransactions, so I hate THAT part. I do find the third story plot in the dreamscape really compelling though.
Overall, I'm not a fan of the predatory marketing, and while I tolerate anime plot, it's not my favorite.
If IS needs a cash cow to fall back on and encourage more ambitious projects, then sure. But if it leads to more engage... i wont be happy. There really havent been too many mainline games to see its impact TOO much, I think it was before Three Houses? Two is not a pattern make, so perhaps I'll have a more solid answer on the next release, though I doubt it.

@@superdude10000 I believe it's post 3 houses, and I agree about the gatcha games. I don't think inserting gambling mechanics like that into a game is healthy for the franchise or the industry as a whole, and the lax way the world generally has handled it is really disturbing.
It'll be truly shit if we have the next generation of kids reaching adulthood with a too familiar relationship with gambling and what it does to people.

Hey bud! (Autism here to say um actually… my bad.) Was watching and I like your videos so far- but I would like to note that you may need a bit more review on things before you say them. FE4 has the biggest maps in the series and literally can take me whole days to do some of the maps as they’re literally gigantic and stretch between a whole forest to between multiple cities. Same with its sequel (I believe, I haven’t played the sequel fe5 just yet!) and it also has breeding! I mean its name itself has the word genealogy in it. The whole second phase of the game is a whole different generation from your first part and the world is very very in depth and political to the point where I was keeping a notepad of the story to keep track. I would truly recommend it, my favorite character of all time is sigurd.

Hear me out: they gradually started taking story more serious from Awakening on, and nailed it with Three Houses. They used Engage as a design exercise, an the next game will be the best of both worlds!
...or more likely, they will have two "series" going, one story based and one combat based, because Fire Emblem is the only way Intelligent System makes money.

It’s a shame Engage’s gameplay is so good. I feel left out but I refuse to buy it. Story is literally half the game and I can’t stand those character designs. While 3H had messy gameplay the sandbox was very good at the least. Good video.

I have always cared for the story and characters more than Gameplay, so 3 houses is my obvious choice. And for some reason it rubs me the wrong way when people say that FE has always had bad writing (I've played the GBA games and a little bit of fe4, couldn't finish it the maps are too big lol) when I never felt it that way, even with the older games. I got interested in FE because of the medieval fantasy setting, and most games live very much to the expectations of it, 3 houses just goes above and beyond the medieval fantasy trope and makes it so much greater. However, I think that if fe6/7/8 were in 3d and had voice acting like modern FE games, they wouldn't be regarded as simple as they tend to be. Presentation really does a lot in the way we interpret media (and that's why I dislike Engage's story, because the presentation in there is so ridiculous it gives me second hand embarrassment most of the time. Except for the scene where Past Alear meets Lumera for the first time and when Zephia and Griss die side by side, those scenes actually touched my heart)

I feel like the radiance games, as poorly sold as they were, were actually great at balancing the two pillars
Awakening...I'm not sure why what it did different caused the series to explode out of its niche corners, but it still feels balanced to me as well
and then Fates took the story pillar out back, chopped it in half, and used the battered half to boost up the tactics side so hard that the gameplay suddenly became frustrating if one wasn't expecting the shift
and I think that's the problem with the imbalance that the last 3 games have had
terrible story? there's not much of a motivating factor to actually sit down and learn the mechanics
terrible tactics? you really feel like you want to know more about the politics but it's such a drag to get there and you almost wish you could just have an actual anime
like legit I got to the end of Golden Deer and was all excited to do another run through of the game and then was faced with "oh right i have to do the first half of the game again"

TH isn’t fun because in maddening you either die to same-turn reinforcements(only reason they exist is the devs running out of idea to make the game harder and wanting to eat through divine pulse instead of just reducing them) or warp+stride and kill the boss before the end of turn 1 because this game was created by Koei Techmo and not Intelligent Systems the usual creator of FE games, so KT being completely inexperienced has the bright idea to make the boss always move first which makes it extremely easy to just kill a boss by standing in front of them and completely ignoring every other enemy and most maps in TH are kill boss so really there is two way to play TH maddening and both are unfun
