    For anyone confused, when birds are growing in new feathers, they’re first coated in a wax-like shell to protect them. Usually a bird just breaks them, but ones around the face and tail are hard to get. If you’re gentle you can use this as bonding with you bird because birds will preen other birds and do this.
    Edit: please read my other replies before commenting, I’m tired of repeating myself.

      @simplesimp9664 Před 6 měsíci +139

      They flinch because of too much pressure and the pin feather isn’t ready, the two she’s specifically on are way too early to be touched and will just fall off because the feathers won’t develop properly or are too weak to stay on.
      If they flinch, LEAVE IT. It’s not ready to come out and they’ll put theyre feather out and start to bleed if you try to force it. When pin feathers are ready the shell will come off with only pets and slight added pressure.
      Using tweezers is probably the worse possible tool, you can’t feel which are ready and this person clearly can’t see or doesn’t care that the pin feathers shouldn’t be touched yet

      @simplesimp9664 she does leave the feather alone. Can't see? Wth! It's a budgie with 3,000 feathers on its body. Tiny feathers on the head. Nobody can see every feather. Why write a book about it. I've been watching this channel for quite a while now. This lady has great trusting relationships with her birds. If Athena didn't like being groomed, she would have flown away. You do realize that when other birds groom each other, they flinch to right. But they still stay there because they like to be groomed. As far as tweezers, that's not much different than another birds beak. I've been around birds all my life. Wild and domestic. What you're trying to insinuate is ignorant.

    Some of these pin feathers have a blood supply to them, aka blood feathers. Sometimes they can get damaged and the bird will start to bleed out. I had a Cockatiel that this happened to once. At the time, all vets nearby were closed, and it was scary as they can bleed out very quickly because of their size.
    I used flour (cornstarch works too) and applied it to the damaged end of the feather to stop the bleeding, and was able to pull out the broken blood feather with some pliers. Im no vet by any means, but thought I'd share in case someone found themselves in a similar situation, and needed to act quickly.
    He survived the procedure btw, and went on to live for many years after. I only had that one blood feather incident. R.I.P Spooky you were a funny little guy.

      This is such a great comment!! Yes!! My budgie Byron always gets one or two big Pinfeathers bit in half by his partner, Ava. I hear a shriek and see his whole head covered in blood. First thing I do is wash my hands, then gently rinse off excess blood with boiled lukewarm water (I always keep some aside). And locate the broken pinfeather. If I'm lucky I can pull it out with my fingers. If not, I do have to use tweezers. After the pinfeather is pulled out usually you don't need to use cornstarch, but cornstarch is great for larger feather bleeds (like wing/tail, or injuries from bird birds.

      @@dazofthemoo1531 well, they are helping the bird mult, by getting the casing off the new feather, when birds grow new feathers, they get those casings that peel and crust away, they pick at them and get them off usually, but in the wild the other flock members will help them for places they can’t reach, but sometimes people hurt them because the casing was not ready to come off and when they are not ready they have a blood flow still, I have a few tips since I’ve had budgies and other birds ect, always ask the vets about pin feathers, always have a big cage for even a tiny bird, they need lots of space not to be sad, and have them out with you as much as possible, also certain stuff not to give them is chocolate, dairy, grapes, avocados, and sugar, but they love veggies that should be 20% of their diet’ but yes, those are new feathers for the lil guy, always be careful tho around them if you get one

      A pin feather is a developing feather on a bird. This feather can grow as a new feather during the bird's infancy, or grow to replace one from moulting.

      I left a reply to this but it didn't show up or it commented on someone else's comment lol. Shes preening the bird. Those stick looking things are called pin feathers. It's basically new feathers that have grown in. In the wild another bird will help them get the castings off to expose the new feathers on the areas they can't reach. So when you have a bird you should also help them because it can be itchy and painful for the bird. She shouldn't be pulling on it like that though. She could just gently rub it off with her pointer finger and thumb. It will crumble off if it's ready.
