- Rait Castle, Clan Cummings/ Comyn, de Rait, Mackintosh
An exploration of Rait Castle, just outside Nairn, to learn of an ancient feud with a bloody end. We also look at the gorgeous architecture which makes this castle in my top five to explore.

Aye... Thank you for sharing our Scottish heritage...though I am not a Raitt I am a McKendrick...we are Scots as well, heart and soul.
Thank you! Always a pleasure!
Thanks for watching Cindy!
Some folk have no respect when it comes to ancient property they just think they have every right to treat it how they want. Interesting history on this place I enjoyed it .
Tell me about it, it really annoys me, the total lack of respect these people have!!
Another great one, I would imagine that you know that Cummings family name comes as a derivitive of the Comyn clan. Mackintosh is also known as the Clan Chattan. Oh please, o' please when remembering William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, give credence to Andrew de Moray who was the architect of the uprising in the north, his home being just across the water in the Black Isle. He was an immensely capable and powerful leader and of a landed family, raising the flag at Ornond Castle and ridding Edwards troops from Elgin Castle meeting up at Bannockburn where he died from injuries sustained in the battle. I think he is very much the unsung heros. If you are back across this way again, take a visit to the Black Isle, there is so much to see, what with Ormond Castle and so many other fascinating places. Sorry if this feels like a history lesson. I love Rait Castle, such a pretty place
de Moray is worth his own video. I need to be aware of how much of a web of people and dates I weave into a video, else they would all be an hour long!
My grandmother is a Comyn
Thank you for this video! My 5X Great-Grandmother was Anna Comyn, who married Alexander Leal in Edinkillie in 1746. They came to New York State in 1773. We are visiting Culloden Battlefield, Forres, Dyke Church, next week and I am very excited to see Scotland.
I have a couple of videos in the Forres area too, have a wee look.
Scotland is amazing . I agree , gorgeous castle .
You are blessed with so much amazingly old , old history . Yes look at this view . Oh, didn’t know about Bonnie Rait !
It IS amazing, and I appreciate it every day.
I’m a descendent of Clan Macintosh all the way back to my 32nd great-grandfather Duncan Dún Caillen. Very informative video. Really irritating when people aren’t respectful of historical places.
Thank you for watching. Yes, thoughtless folk really grind my gears 😡
I am a McIntosh myself , appreciate the tour.
I really enjoyed your video tour. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing, It's a lovely place.
One of my favourites.... a right pain to find though.....
I like this castle! The windows must have been so pretty when it was all still intact. They are still beautiful today. The walls were built so thick. Even though the light comes through, it must have been a bit dark in the rooms, as the sunshine had to go quite away to get to the actual room. I would love to go back in time and see it at it's prime. But not on the day when there were people trying to kill each other... I'd rather show up on a quiet weekend morning! 😊
Aye, that must have been a horrid night in that castle. We got a calmer day, although if the camp fire boys had been there it might not have gone so smoothly! 🙄
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory Hopefully one day they will respect the history and come to appreciate it in an appropriate way. Kids just don't think some times... 🙁
I am a direct decendant of the macķintosh clan
Good choice of music and nice editing.
Thank you!!
Crazy. I have traced my direct lineage back to Clan Davidson. I know that Clan Davidson came from a marriage of Slane MacIntosh and Donald Comyn. There's so much clan history in Scotland. Stories of clans fighting one day and loving the next.
Cool. You should watch the Tulloch Castle video I made, it's all about Davidsons 😉
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory i watched that one first
I love this story, my grandad used to tell me this when I was wee. seeing as my ancestors deleted the previous owners I'm claiming it 😂
You're claiming it, aye? Lol. Good luck 😉, and thanks for watching!!
Hello distant cousin.
Great video! The lassie with nae hawds, whit was she gonna do to the folk that made the fire? give them a skelp across the lug? No applause please :P
A boot in the necessary bits perhaps 😄😄
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory lol I'd love tae see that!
i lived in Nairn as a wee lad in the 90s. the local lads took me on a bike ride there, twas magical. any other old ruins in the area? i seem to remember peacocks and a bridge near a river with some close.
Can honestly say while we probably encountered a few bridges, we didn't encounter any peacocks or hens, ha ha
As always, very informative and interesting. What a bunch of muppets lighting a fire in there though! Beggars belief.
Grinds my gears.... We have been known to partake in the odd bit of wild camping. Never have we been camping on or near a historic site, never mind setting a fire. Some folk shouldn't be allowed out in my opinion.
Loc Moy!!!
Loch Moy is over 20 miles from Rait Castle, it's beautiful though!
It's Loch Moigh if your shouting our battle cry.
