The Salt Lake Vocal Artists perform "If Music be the Food of Love" by David Dickau. Dr. Brady Allred conducted the piece in the beautiful Shirakawa Hall, Nagoya, Japan on October 17, 2013. Laurel Enke-piano.
During their 8-day tour of Japan, the Salt Lake Vocal Artists performed in Tokyo, Mastumoto and Nagoya and were the guest choir of the Karuizawa International Choral Festival in Karuizawa, Japan.
Text:
If music be the food of love,
Sing on till I am fill'd with joy;
For then my list'ning soul you move
To pleasures that can never cloy.
Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare
That you are music ev'rywhere.
Pleasures invade both eye and ear,
So fierce the transports are, they wound,
And all my senses feasted are,
Tho' yet the treat is only sound,
Sure I must perish by your charms,
Unless you save me in your arms. - Hudba
We sang this in high school my senior year. Our choir teacher was leaving to pursue her Masters and us as a choir found the song and sang it to her as a surprise. We could barely finish the song because we all started crying because she was so shocked and started crying. Best performance we ever did!!
This wasent a public high-school was it?
Yup, public inner-city school. We won a national title for our performance that year.
it’s a beautiful song.. very moving.
Always emotional when choir teachers leave... same tear fest happened at my school
My choir actually got the honor of singing this in front of David Dickau. Most nerve wrecking and amazing moment of my life.
This makes me miss choir in high school😭😭😭
Same. Such good times.
We preformed this song for over 1,000 people on graduation day last year. It was amazing!
+Kira Lynn Bravo voua !
My college's choir sang this today and it gave me chills... just had to hear it again. Beautifully chilling
Sang this as a concert choir in high school. We all laid on the floor in the dark. This is amazing. Thank you for the talent and memories
love the line "your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare that you are music everywhere" QwwwwwQ
Just the whole middle of this song reminds me of a dark quiet night in the city around the time of autumn.
I listen to this song over and over. Each time I watch it (which is a lot, trust me) I become more amazed at this talented group. The dynamics, rhythm, and best are outstanding and spot on. Great job to this talented group.
time to watch it again
This is powerful! They have such rounded vocals. I could listen to this all day. 🥰
I had the honor of singing this song with some of the most talented people at my school and we won sweepstakes for UIL and I will never forget that day. 4/11/22
My junior year we sang this in the last concert before shutdown and it was one of my favorite songs we’d done as a group
Wow. Chills on that last chord. Well done, Salt Lake Vocal Artists!
They sound so great
What a wonderful music! So beautiful harmony from the hearts...
A beautiful rendition of one of my favorite pieces of music. Thanks for sharing.
I have been searching for this arrangement. Beautiful thank you
Good arrangement!! The choir sang beautifully. Encore!
A piece of heaven!
If music be the food of love
Sing on, sing on, sing on, sing on
'Til I am filled, am filled with joy
For then my listening soul you move
For then my listening soul you move
To pleasures that can never cloy
Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare
That you are music everywhere
Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare
That you are music everywhere
Pleasures invade both eye and ear
So fierce, so fierce, so fierce, so fierce
The transports are, they wound
And all my senses feasted are
And all my senses feasted are
Though yet the treat is only sound
Sure I must perish by your charms
Unless you save me in your arms
Sure I must perish by your charms
Unless you save me in your arms
We are singing this song as a combined piece with all the choirs. It will have a special place in my heart since this will be the last concert/competition I will have with this choir. I have been in this choir for three years and now, it seems I must leave it. But, with that said, I will leave with a clean slate.
We sang this year for LGPE (My senior year). Being that This special year has been cut too short, and we will not be able to create any of the special memories that other seniors before us have, this song and that last performance will always have a special place in my heart.
Always loved singing this song...makes me miss choir more and more
Totally and utterly beautiful ! Sing on !
This makes me miss high school so much. The nostalgia after graduating is not really a feeling you recognize until you realize what's gone. If only I could go back in time.
I love it so much. You're like angels in heaven. Thank U for make me feel so good.
as always SLVA show LOVE to the vieweres through their sound.

The Bingham High Madrigals and I are singing this song for State!:)
this song is so pretty , my vocal class at dsa is singing it
I'm in high school and well we get to sing this song but its wierd they are a bit slower Eltham our composer has it but they were still great and I love the song❤
I'm singing this for All county in my choir.
are you in the rockingham county district? we are singing it in mine too and if by chance you are that would be cool
Elizabeth Chavez Damn...where do you live that you have All County
I love this, but to be honest, when you have the actual composer conducting you, it makes it a whole lot better. I just performed it conducted by Dr. David Dickau and he made us perform it with so much more emotion and flow and ebb than this.
+Lexi Hamm It's wonderful that you performed this with Dr. Dickau. I came upon this particular performance because I have been called in to accompany a local high school choir at a festival concert and I wanted to get a feel for the piece since my rehearsing with the choir will be limited. I found a lot of emotion in this performance, and I am sure when you are among your singers performing this, you feel the emotion is more superior.
Lexi Hamm How did you get the honor of performing under him? I actually got the same honor and International Music Camp and it was amazing!
My school is singing this song. I'm a soprano :)))
Dar muzica este într-un anume fel vorbind , hrana pentru iubire .
ah yes this is what im talking a bout man. i am on the highschool chior at crestwood high school and we do this song. bases all day
+Olivia Minchello ok ok ill say this, the two out liers we rock
+Olivia Minchello yea man were the only ones that's truly grounded
My Chorale did this for Nationals. It was what won us the Sweepstakes Award. While their version may be technically accurate (and it's amazing at that), but there are a lot of missed opportunities for emotion to seep through and really affect the emotions of the listener. It is still beautiful, but the conveying of emotion is lacking.
+Tyler Kuder You have an interesting analysis as to the lack of emotion you observed. I was not familiar with this piece at all and just came upon this interpretation which I felt demonstrated much emotion. In fact, before I read the comments, I had already observed the artistic feeling by this choir. From experience, I know that actually being in the midst of a performance adds that extra boost of emotion that one doesn't necessarily feel when viewing a CZcams version. Congratulations to your choir
This is nice. Vocal videos are the only sanctuary left on CZcams for pleasant, intelligent conversation. I also found your analysis very interesting and intuitive.
I sang this song. I can't remember if it was in high school or college.
My choir is currently practicing it. And of course I sang along with my part.

Fun fact: My teacher's father made this song up.
The tempo needs controlling, the vowels aren't tall enough(especially in 'pleasures'), the consonants need to be eased down a bit especially on the letter S. Breath control and union in each section should be improved. Other than that, it was a good sound. I'd give it a 2. EDIT: also focus on beat patterns.
um...nope not very many can top Dr Allred
And what are your credentials to critique Dr. Allred, a conductor I've never met, but always have respected his work? And what do you mean by "focus on beat patterns?" The "union in each section," what do you mean by that? Balance? Rhythm? Unification of vowel? The reason I ask is because "union" is not terminology used in choral technique. Unless English is a second language for you, then I understand and even am envious of your command of the language. But as far as I am concerned, the balance was excellent and so were the unification of vowels. As a matter of fact, if you understand choral physics, balance and blend is a product of unity of vowel.
"The tempo needs controlling..." That comment, right out of the gate, makes one question the whole thing. If the tempo wasn't perfectly controlled and the choir in exact sync with the conducting gesture from beginning to end of this performance, I don't know what ever would be.
Very bad interpretation, change your minde
Always loved singing this song...makes me miss choir more and more

+Lexi Hamm my choir conductor actually had us do an assignment so we would become emotionally attached to it so you can portray the really meaning of the song, and inspire others around you. It was wonderful
