I just gotta say: i cant be the only one that could just cry with absolute relief you are doing the next right thing. There is no doom, gloom we aint gonna make it manure on this channel. Keep on pluggin away, doin what we need to do. Dont know how? Heres how! I appreciate so much the
"Heres how" cause i am doin the best i can. Thanks so much for all yal do
Northern climate here, zone 4 in Wisconsin. We planted 160 cloves of the Music variety of garlic; this variety makes large cloves but only has 5-6 cloves per bulb, this garlic is spicy. We also planted 160 cloves of Chesnok Red garlic, this variety makes smaller cloves but have 8-12 cloves per bulb and this is a more mild tasting garlic.
I'm wondering if those side shoots are the "CORMS"-(seeds) that garlic forms?? They usually form on the sides of the garlic and can be planted to make a new garlic plant. Some break off and get left in the soil & will grow as well.
Something that I do that I've not seen ANYONE else do when harvesting garlic is I cut the garlic bulbs off the stalks leaving approximately 2 inches of the stem on the garlic bulb. I do this with my onions, too. They both are laid out to "cure" and form the paper skins that protect the garlic. I then clean all the stalks, remove the dead parts then wash well. Then I chop the stems/leaves and dehydrate them to use in soups/stews or have even made leek/garlic-like soup from the larger white part of the stems. I always add garlic to my leek soup anyway and by using the white of the garlic stems gives a wonderful fresh garlic taste to the soup. By cutting off the stems (you've got to leave at least 2 inches of it on the garlic bulbs), did not affect the quality nor taste of my garlic bulbs/cloves and they cured as they should to form the paper skins.
I'm a senior on social security and can't afford to waste anything I can use for food so I tried it and it worked well so I continued to do it. I've been afraid to mention it on any YT channel fearing I would get crazy flack from people saying the stems/leaves HAVE to be left on for it to cure properly.
I'll even go one further. I also cut the roots off, leaving a bit on the bulb, wash them well, and cook with them, too. I've even dehydrated them to use later as you get a LOT of them with a large garlic harvest. They have a mild garlic flavor that is perfect in recipes if you want a garlic flavor that isn't overwhelming. I love garlic and use it in almost everything I cook. I was curious about eating/cooking with garlic roots so I looked it up on the internet. Would you believe that some chefs actually do use garlic roots in some of their special cuisines??? So I wasn't so crazy after all. I also looked up if you could cure garlic without the entire stalk/stem and YES YOU CAN. You just leave at least 2 inches of the stem on the bulb & cure. It is a lot of extra work to clean, wash & chop up all those stems but once you try the garlic/leek soup from the fresh garlic white stem or use a handful or two of the dehydrated stems/leaves in a soup or stew, you will never let another one go to waste by leaving them on the bulb to cure. Look it up. It is on the internet as well as using garlic roots to cook with.
For the new gardeners out there, if you leave your garlic in the ground too long it will rot, especially if you have a lot of rain in the spring like we do here in coastal AL. I left a few smaller garlic in the ground hoping they would grow a bit more when I harvested what was ready and they didn't grow any more and the bulb ROTTED or was soft, mushy & unusable. The stem was still there but pulled right out of the rotted bulb. I discovered the smaller garlic were the small cloves that I planted (as I said earlier, I don't like to waste anything) and they just don't grow as big as the larger cloves. Now I know 1st hand why people say to choose & use the largest of the cloves to plant...because they give you the largest garlic bulbs at harvest
Thank you, Mrs. "H" for a great video! I ALWAYS look for all new videos you put up. Even tho I've gardened over 30+ years, I ALWAYS learn something new & beneficial from you & Mr. "H"! Love y'all!
I'm right behind you with my garlic. Where there's a will there's a way. Soon harvesting 1k bulbs. 🤗♥️🇺🇸🙌🕊️🏆Keep shining & going everyone. We've got this! 😁
Madame, you are absolutely awesome. I have been watching you for quite awhile and you never cease to be amazing! I think the one that got me started watching you was canning ghee. Thank you very much! BUT you have since then taught me so much more. I want you to know I appreciate you! Jeane
Me too!
I put mine in food processor and then in freezer bags flatten them out like pancakes and when I need some I take the bag out of freezer and break off a hunk, it breaks off easy and just put the rest back in freezer, it stacks well in freezer too when the bags are real flat.....
Im sure when u do that flattening, it really brings out the flavor even more😊
That's how I do mine too. It makes it so easy!
Thank you for sharing this great idea.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is my first year growing garlic. I'm so glad you posted these videos. I went out and picked my garlic just in time.
I harvested 115 heads of garlic.
The JOY of the Lord .
I only have 1 carrot..planted cukes. I'm 82, but I feel like I'm walking with God enjoying HIS WORK. HALLUJAH
Northerner here (above the 47° line) and I like Armenian garlic, Romanian, Music, and Alto.
MIgardener, Keene Garlic, and Filaree Farms have been good suppliers 😊
Southern climate: purple garlic, hard neck and soft neck garlic does great! Added shallots too! Absolutely beautiful!
Mrs H, you are amazing! You are a great example to us all, seeing how hard you work. You have a great green thumb & I admire all your beautiful produce. Thank you for all the information you share. Blessings for continued success in your garden.💐🌞💐
Very impressive and inspiring ,no going to the toxic box store to buy garlic must be an awesome feeling
❤
An old fashioned way to dry garlic is to braid them into a long rope and hang the ropes to dry. Takes up less space and its quick.
Thanks for not leaving us hanging, haha. I love to hang clothes out to dry. First time garlic growing. I have 13 plants. One more leaf die back before I can peek. I so appreciate your teaching us to not only grow our groceries, but preserve them as well. So valuable. Thank you, Mrs.H!
Ours is almost ready. We have been growing all our garlic for many, many years. It looks like we will have a good harvest this year as well. We always plant several varieties, because you never know which will do really well and which will be a flop. I use the peewees, when I make bone broth. That way I don't have to bother peeling them in order to use them. I still have a lot left from last year. I think I will dehydrate those. I also am going to make a fresh jar of honey fermented garlic.
I am zone 5. I grow hard neck garlic and dry it in one of my sheds. My husband put up wire shelving that allows me to hang the garlic. It dries completely in about 2 weeks.
Have you watch Hollis and Nancy Homestead and see the curing racks Hollis built for his garlic and onions? They are in Florida so it may be something you could use too in Georgia.
I was thinking the same thing!
@@dedemaddoxI was thinking the same as well. Doesn't look difficult to build for Mr. H. It would be so useful for all the garlic they grow as well as the onions.
That's a great harvest!!!
It's incredible! 🧡👏🏾
I'm in NE Ohio, Zone 6, and I've successfully grown hardneck and softneck garlic. We plant in late October and harvest after July 4th. Some favorite hardnecks are Bogatyr, Purple Glazer, Music, Spanish Rojas and a family heirloom Italian. Softneck varieties also grow well here, like California early and California white. I also grow a random softneck variety that I buy from a local Mediterranean grocery store each year. I've got over 100 bulbs growing currently - growing garlic is so satisfying it's addicting. 😂
Zone 5 - Iowa. I've settled to two kinds - Music hardneck and Inchelium Red softneck. Them and the shallots and potato onions I cover with a bit of straw or leaves with 4 mil plastic over the top, then bricked down to overwinter. That saves them from heaving out in the freeze and thaws. The soil is well fed with organic matter and the garlic grows the size that you have there.
Great information. I'm in zone 5 too. When do you plant and harvest?
@@Luv2Garden2 Lately it's been early December to plant. I try to watch the forecast to see if it's not going to get above 45F from there, but before the hard freeze. Sometimes the planting window can be tight. Have the ground ready to go, hopefully it won't be too wet when the time comes and have to mud them in.
Harvest around July 1, will let them dry down in the ground as long as I can but if there's a rainy patch coming will take them out before so they don't deteriorate. Dry them in a shed.
I love your videos. You teach me something in every video!!!
But it is very hard to stay awake if I watch for more than 15 minutes or more, BECAUSE, your voice is so relaxing and calming.
That is not ment to be an insult.
I have actually re-watched some of your longer videos.....not to relearn something, but JUST TO RELAX MY MIND!!!
So thank you for ALL you do for your viewers!!
YOU ARE TRULY A BLESSING FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE GOING THROUGH SOME TOUGH TIMES.♥️
Peace and blessings to you my UTube friend.
I have an old building by my garden that is open to the south on 1 long side. I put up a wire panel wall in 1 section in the building and i usually braid a few of my garlics together and hang them on that to dry. I also use it to dry gourds in the fall. Works great!
Beautiful! You're so smart! I love learning from you and Mr H!
Southern climate. I've only grown hardneck garlic. I found a video about braiding them, where they look kind of look like macrame. I'll try to find it. It would work with any garlic, and mine has kept until time to replant. After that, I plant the largest cloves and powder the rest.
Where do you get your seed garlic from to plant? Thank you
SHALOM 💖💖💖💖💞🌹💞🌹💞🌹💞🌹💞🌹FAIMLY GREAT HARVEST..IM IN ZONE 5 ITHACA NY OUR GARLIC IS ALMOST READY AS WELL🧐YES HARD NECK ROCAMBOLE IS A UNIQUE TYPE FRAGRANT SHARP BITE DOESN'T STORE AS LONG.. BUT WORTH EVERY BIT OF THE EFFORT 🧐NOW NEXT PLANTING ...ROTATE TO A DIFFERENT SPOT JUST LIKE 🍠🥔 POTATOES.🧐TO WARD OFF FUNGUS..🧐OK GOOD DAY.
Thank you for the informative videos. I've learned so much from you. Take care and have a wonderful day.
During the planting and growing season how often do we need to water the garlic and when do we need to stop watering before harvesting them. Thank you for teaching us that are 1st time planting garlic.
Also my first time growing garlic in Iowa Zone 5a. Our winters are cold, so I mulched 4~6 " with shredded leaves and straw. To help it sprout, should have removed most of the mulch in early spring & brought it back when soil was warmer, but left it in place. Mulch kept the soil moist (finger test) even though it was a dry spring, so I seldom watered. Didn't want soggy roots. Planted 5 Nov, harvested 5 Jul. Soil was still moist at harvest. Decent bulbs. Lesson learned: pull back the heavy mulch until the garlic sprouts and then bring it back to retain moisture. Hope this helps...
This is my first time growing garlic one of my clients friend gave me some hard neck garlic and thier growing so well I planted them in November.
I love this channel ❤ you are such a great teacher 💝 bless you Mrs. H 😊
Well...I pushed it too far and had some cloves separate in the ground. This hasn't happened to me before, so I'll need to research what I can do with them. I still have 20 plants to harvest. I may go ahead and pull them just to be safe. I'm at the second leaves yellowing. My wife was actually wondering what I was going to do with all the garlic and onion I had planted. Your garlic looks great!
Marie, every year I don't have enough of my own grown garlic to replant all of my own bulbs. So, I buy organic garlic from Sprouts and plant those cloves. I have no idea what "kind" of garlic it is. But, it grows just fine. I'm in 7b. I plant my cloves in late October and harvest in May. I dry mine hanging upside down on a trellis under cover in the garage.
Im in zone 7b I live 8n NM I planted my garlic in November and it should be ready in June. I pulled 9ne today and they're getting big but not ready yet can't wait .
Looks like the garlic bulb with the extra bulbs is hugging the main bulb! Two witnesses!
I just love you Mrs.H and Mr H is funny you both keep me inspired and laughing
I found an amazing drying rack from a second hand store …a 8 foot wire closet shelf that I straddle on the corner of my back porch …works fabulous and can set it up on a few chairs inside in case it decides to rain …nice open spaces for drying onions and garlic allowing plenty of air flow …my five dollar investment that will store easily and last for many years, stay blessed
Great job, Mrs. Heart!
Why not braid the green tops and hang them? I’m Italian descent and that’s what we do. Then we cut the bottom most bulb off when you need to use it.
Hello Mrs heart from northern mi. Thanks you I grow garlic but what I didn't know is that there a difference. Soft neck and hard neck or even knw what to look for .😂😂 Hmm 😏 boy how what. Have a great day ☺️
I live in Central Florida and I just want to thank you for all the inspiration over the last few years! I am gardening in cloth containers from Amazon. Also, some core and beans in 20 gallon Rubbermaid containers. I am using cattle panels to create 3 9ft Ling trellises. So I have tomatoes, corn, for types of green beans, brassica, okra, etc growing like crazy. Last year was a bust for tomatoes...this year I already have 30 tomatoes on the vines. BIG BOY, MR. STRIPEY, GERMAN PINK, BETTER BOY. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I live in a rental and my landlady loves my garden and was inspired by it.
Love your channel! Can’t wait to see how you preserve it. This year we are mincing fresh garlic and freezing it in olive oil for garlic paste. We don’t have a cellar and would love your thoughts on preserving roots veggies and other things typically seen in root cellars. We also cut the scapes (minus blooms) and sautéed them fresh for the first time. Congrats on your first garlic harvest.
Was just wondering what the next steps would be but youre always a step ahead of us...thank you for sharing you garden wisdom !
I can smell that garlic from my house. Lol. Love this. ❤
Gorgeous garlic!! I'm excited to harvest my first year of garlic and onions. So far both are looking great!
Yes I love the way garlic 🧄 smells I just love it thank you Mrs. Heart ♥️
I planted my first time in Nov last year, I live in CT. Im at the one leaf dying off phase of my crop so far. Cant wait! :) Thankyou sharing your process.
Mrs ❤ you need a big porch on your house for thows things and a shady place for snapping beans don't forget the rocking chairs and lemonade I need one to.❤
PRECIOUS! AWESOME harvest & just EXACTLY what I needed to see as mine is coming up tomorrow!! Thank you 😊💓!
Teacher of the year!❤
You are so creative and FIT! Farm life looks good on you. 💪🏾 *back to watching video* 😂
Your SOOO cute. ""Look how beautiful my garlic is"
The JOY of the Lord is my strength..
I’m glad you did these two videos because I grew garlic for first time. So I didn’t know when to harvest & what to do after I did 😁🙏🏽💖
Hi , Mr H & H , and everyone else Moniee-Mon, is listening thanks 😊 2023 15 June
🍃Thank you So much Mrs. H for this video🍃 💞🌱
you have plenty of that garlic to keep them vampires away lol love garlic on everything see you on the next one peace and blessing to you and Mr H don't forget to eat what you grow
Thank you Mrs. H, I have learned so much from this video on the proper way to cure my garlic.
I am in a northern climate and planted 50 bulbs of hard neck on 10/31, almost ready to be picked. It is 4 feet tall. My soft neck I planted on 1/10, it is also just about ready and about 3 feet tall. Both have thick stalks about 1 inch thick with about 10 leaves. One has turned brown. So very soon I will be pulling them. 🩵💜🩷💚
Amazing thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge!
Very excited to try this. I’m wanting to put in a garlic and onion bed next year.
Hollis and nancy built a cute drying cabinet.
Great idea Mrs H. I would never have thought of using the table and shade and staggering thebplacement. I can't wait till harvest. Thank you again!😍😍
Amazing harvest! Awesom!
I braid my soft necks. They are much easier to braid than hard necks. I do run a string of yarn or bale twine in it to strengthen the braid because they get pretty thin and brittle in the basement during the year. When they start sprouting, I take the leftover and chop them up and freeze them or dehydrate them. In Kansas, in my basement, they can go until March before sprouting...but nature wants too make babies, and they will sprout.
And also, garlic is sooo healthy for you! Oh, it 's sooo healthy!
Thinking outside the box, great job!
Hi there Mrs. H. You are talking directly to me, LOL. Just kidding but really, okay, Thank you so much!! lol. so exciting! I will set my crop out in fall for a harvesting party in Spring.
Hello Mrs. Heart I had been wondering about how to cure the garlic and now I know thanks to you. Thank you for sharing and God bless 🙏💜
Just pulled my garlic in NC. Best year so far
Beautiful crop.
Thank you for sharing this information with us
Thank you so much for your videos. I will be raising garlic this year in containers as I don't have much garden space. You help me come up with a few ideas of my own. Once again thank you.
I just grew garlic 1st real time doing it. I have a whole 20 garlic. If I knew it was so easy would have done much more. Thank u for the inspiration
I’m in east Texas zone 8b. I planted two soft neck varieties and one hard neck and they have all done well. I planted Dec 1st and they all survived the deep freeze we had here mid-December. They were the only plants that did! It even killed my protected potted trees. 😢 However I am excited to have the garlic scapes and I did learn that it’s good to refrigerate the seed bulbs for a couple of weeks before planting and it helps hard necks grow well in the southern heat! So far so good and I’ll be harvesting the soft neck varieties tomorrow as they are very ready. So excited! I planted Inchillium red and red Chesnok and one other I can’t remember the name.
MY MOTHER, ME, GRANDMOTHER ALL HUNG OUR CLOTHES OUTSIDE THE FRESH SMELL IS WONDERFUL I LOVE ❤️ YOUR VIDEOS TUVM
I love these videos these people are down to earth good souls…..I have learned a lot since I started watching you and your husband keep up the good work and faith and keep making educational videos for us to watch and learn from.
Speaking of the tropics, there's 2 tropical disturbances in the Atlantic now.
Hello Ms.H, I'm in the south zone 9b Louisiana. So far, the elephant garlic is doing well in the garden
NE. It’s my first time growing garlic. The soft neck I planted rotted in the ground, and I just harvested the scapes on the hard neck.
GOOD MORNING MRS. H!!❤❤❤
Good morning ☀️
I have 60 hard neck cloves that are doing so well this year. Planted them last October, we’re in WNY zone 6a. The scapes aren’t out yet, usually harvest in July. Good video, definitely have to dry it to get the storage life.
Love it what a good garlic harvest🌿🌱🍃☘
What a beautiful sight first thing in in the morning. What a nice harvest!
This Italian NY gal living in NC, loves the idea of curing the gaaaarlic under the clothes lines. Because what Italian wouldn't want to smell like gaaaarlic every day XOXOXO
I planted Music garlic, it’s ready but it’s too wet to pull it. Being from the west it’s mind blowing how different the gardening is in the south. It was up in Feb and my perineal herbs never totally went to sleep for what was supposed to be winter! Love it!!
Hello from East Texas! Great looking harvest. I’ve never grown garlic before so I’m planning to try some this fall
Love your CZcams channel. Your knowledge is important 😊
Two videos in one dayyyyyyyy, you spoil us 🤩🤎
I am in a 5b-6a zone in the mountains of BC and I have 74 mixed cloves planted since October 20th 2022 and 15 cloves Elephant garlic....all hardneck varieties. Softnecked don't survive our winters. I did not know to give them fertilizer except just our kelp/fish blend of 20/20/20 that I give everyone twice a month. I gave them their last wateting last night. They are harvested in 10 days. I braid my garlic 10days after it is pulled. I prefer Elephant Garlic because it has a more uniform flavour and a bigger more mild clove.
Lovely harvest of garlic. I'm in Baltimore, Maryland and I planted around 30 bulbs in October and our 5-degree day must have killed all of my garlic because none of my garlic except for 1 came up. My kind of garlic was whatever I buy at my farm store to use. It wasn't elephant garlic because I don't like that kind. I sure miss my garlic though. Have a great day and send some rain up to Baltimore as we need it. It's been weeks without a good soaker!
Thank you!!
You're the coolest thing! 🙂
Awesome harvest, Mrs H.
Got it all pulled. Thanks to you saying bottom 2-3 leaves dying off I pulled them. Everybody told me to wait till 17th of June or July and don't touch it till then. Well some where mushy I threw them away. They grew beautiful but when pulled they looked like leeks. The elephant garlic was not big bulbs but they were ok. Now is there a way I can use the ones that look like leeks or are they throwaway's.
I just love the peaceful background sounds of your video.
Grandparents would braid the garlic and hang it outside on the shady side of the house... love that garlic
Another nitrogen fixer is composting chicken poo for at least six months and cover the ground around the plants to retain moisture and add nutrients to the ground.
Hubby helped me harvest our small crop. Getting ready to head outside now to do the same thing.
Very nice GARLIC
When I was growing up, the best smell besides fresh baked bread, is clean Laundry dried out on the line. Especially bedding,.
Thank you so much. I was wondering how to dry them. I cant wait for the next step.
Northern climate and I grow elephant garlic. Just harvested mine here in central indiana today. I got baseball size bulbs. Very happy with my harvest. I will ferment some in honey. Eat some and then save some for planting this fall.
Love your channel ❤️
