You're not Synesthetic, are you? Your emotional reactions feel very poignant, and while it's clear you know a lot about music and composition, you don't overanalyze everything in the moment. Very enjoyable to watch someone go through the emotional rollercoaster Tool often sends us on without trying to pick it all apart.

IMO "The Pot" is probably the most "radio friendly" of Tool's songs, hence why it's the most popular.

Whilst 10000 days is an amazing set of songs it's possibly two of the worst picks to get a feel for the band as a whole imo. It's a eulogy to his mother, those songs are *very* different to Tools usual modus operandi, and very intentionally so

Sober was always their most popular song...to the point where Tool was almost a one-hit wonder before Stinkfist. It's strange to see how the new/streaming generation views Tool. The Pot being more popular than Sober is a day that I never thought I'd see....but it's cool to see Kira leaning towards the Proggy long songs where most of my Gen X compatriots prefer Undertow/Aenima eras overall.

To each their own, but I would bet that most people new to tool would be left on a high at the conclusion of reflection then kind of be scratching their heads at the end of triad. I think it's a song, probably like 7empest, that should kind of be held onto until later in someone's tool discovery, after theyre more accustomed to all the wild time signatures and stuff. One of the most impressive things about Tool is the bass playing, it's pretty difficult to notice it when hearing first time but most of the synth like sounds that you hear on tracks like schism's bridge(a great example) are made by the bass, he uses some Pedals and the volume knob on his instrument to create these sounds.(i imagine that if you never seen them live and hadn't noticed you'd be blown away on seeing how he does these sounds live.)

He has a winery on the ranch where he grows his own grapes and makes his own custom wine that's very well-recieved as a top tier wine in the business. You touched on something very important, I feel, for me anyways, about TooL "creating sounds [you] hate".
Throughout most of their music you will find a common thread: unease. Whether through music, imagery, lyrics, or a combination thereof, there is an intent to make you feel uncomfortable.
When you're uncomfortable, you're vulnerable. And through vulnerability truth can be found.
Because if you can peer into the dark corners of yourself, the places you look past and try to forget, the aspects you try to pretend aren't there and that you hide under floorboards and locked basement doors in your mind; there you will find the keys to your own revelation and growth.
TooL can be just music to listen to.
But like a trained hypnotherapist, if you allow it, TooL can become a guide that leads to an internal mirror.

Amazing band. The whole band are quality. Seen them a few times (including a club gig many years ago in Glasgow) and never been anything other than blown away. Intelligent, powerful and full of emotion.
Danny Carey (the drummer) is a massive fan (and also was a friend as he got to know him personally) of Neil Peart of Rush. The first gig Tool did after Neil's passing Danny did a drum tribute to him which was so lovely. The band won a grammy last year and Danny named and dedicated his part of the award to 2 drummers who were most important to him, John Bonham of Led Zep and Neil from Rush! For both of those things I have a deep love and respect for him as a person.

When he refers to 'Mom' I take that as being mother nature and so he sees all the bullshit humans do to the environment and is furious that we care more about our lattes and haircuts than we do about the planet. Most people are so vain and short sighted that they could care less that the planet is going to hell but as long as they're alright with their picket fence and land rover that's all that matters to them.
So he's praying for natural disasters to kill us all off so that mother nature can take back what's hers and reclaim itself and rewild. But I could be way off hahaha tool are very open to interpretation usually, there's no wrong way to look at it

People are so deeply committed to uphold their spin in the hamster wheel that they don't notice that they themselves are a cog in the circus machine. Once you realize the reality it becomes very frustrating, every person you meet is solely there for their own personal gain. It's like when you mention something "controversial" and you quickly notice how many people actually just silently disappears.

Love your reactions! Just the same how I felt growing up and hearing them for the first time myself. I was rocking out just like you when I was growing up, trying to lock on to the beat and just jamming out. Once you hear the songs a bunch of times and you really start to lock on to all the transitions, its a great feel!

I discovered them two years ago…….at the age of 72. The energy is harder to process when you’re older, so I have to listen in spurts. But I do think they are one of the best musicians and best bands in the world today.

Like "Third Eye" off Ænima, "Reflection"/"Triad" off Lateralus and "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)"/"Rosetta Stoned" off 10,000 Days.
If you wanted a trippier Undertow song to dip your toes, maybe "Swamp Song".
Food for thought. I'd just love to see the more "out there" Tool songs melt your brain.

I akin TOOL on a Next-Gen Pink Floyd trip, everything melds so well. Everything from the Singer, to the drummer, the guitarist and the bassist, it just melds so well that it's, ORGASMIC.
