Hi, Great clip. I know its 2 years on. I fish for carrots a lot and use a rig similar to yours. My experience is that the hook up rate improves when you thread the hook from the front, so it hangs in a bit inward (the opposite to how your hook was put on). The hook is designed to roll into the corner of the mouth when they turn or swim away.
Cheers, I'm gonna make up a rig for tonight. I usually catch Red Gurnards accidentally when i'm fishing for mackerel, they sometimes go for shrimp sabiki rigs if you're fishing low with them - but I actually want to catch one properly!
That's wrong, you'll be wasting your time losing good fish if you do this. If your gonna copy this rig make sure you put your loop through the eye (barb side) first, this will make your hook point inward not outward.

Yep your spot on 👍 this is quite an old video from me and I will be making a gurnard update soon.
Just thought you should know that could be misleading ‘because you didn’t catch a red guenard but a tub gurnard. you can’t tell from the fun colour
We don’t have Tub Gurnard in the southern hemisphere! Might want to check your facts!
Off topic but what flies do you recommend for Hawkes bay rivers?
Woolly buggers for streamers, Pheasant tail, hares ear and caddis for nymphs
How did you get sponsored by black magic?
What’s the best bait??
pilchard / Skipjack Oily baits do the best
Cheers a good video! What bait do you find best for Gurnard? Cheers
Chris House try ragworm
We caught one of girvan pier Scotland with mackerel feathers it was a small one two pollock and a gurnard
When I lived I Hb I fished with my dad and we had success using pilchards, which also caught almost any other species too
