    Thank you AGAIN for this educational Fluval video. I had a serious algae problem (staghorn and black hair) and it killed off most of my plants leaving just anubias, crypts and sag. I ended up doing a major takedown, removing all the water, substrate and hardscape. Poured boiling water over the lava rocks and gave them a good scrub (no soap). Of course it didn't remove the black hair algae but it did kill it. Replaced everything and bought some new plants (swords, pogostemon, bacopa). I still have the Fluval set at 50% (no blue) and will keep it there for a little while. After 2 weeks, there is new growth on the plants and no melting. Everything is doing well, no new algae growth, and I've noticed my nerite snails and my honey gourami eating the black hair algae. AWESOME! Your video has saved my tank.

    Bentley, this series has been so helpful! I wish I would have seen them sooner! If you have time, here’s been my struggle/mistakes…
    I started out with my 29 gallon tank I’d say, moderately planted. I have the light sitting 3-4” above the tank. I used too strong of light at 80% and it took me until more recently to realize I was also starving my plants (0 nitrates). I’ve had algae problems all along. I dialed down my light recently to 60% with a ramp up and down of an hour each, so about 9 1/2 hrs total. Still battling algae. I have medium and low light plants. It’s been running for 4 months, dirted capped with sand, fully stocked (half the fish are still babies), just switched to a fluval 207 canister filter and love it. I use thrive and aquarium coop fert products, 20% water change every week sometimes 2. Do you think I’m ok where I’m at to correct my problems or would you have any suggestions to add?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  Před 2 lety +5

      I would try dosing your liquid ferts as 1 pump every other day. Let's spread the nutrients out over the week and help the plants continuously have something to feed on to grow and combat the algae.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  Před rokem

      I would start at 50% for the whites, 35% for pink and 5% blue. Monitor for algae and adjust if needed. If plants are showing issues that are light related we can dial it up, but if there's too much algae and plants are doing okay then we can dial it down some.

    Hello Bentley. I really appreciate your videos. You explain things well. I have a 75-gallon with the entire top covered in big water lettuce with roots extending 8-12 inches. On the bottom are large Anubias, and two lily bulbs. My old light I had on Red light 8 am - 5 pm, White light noon to 9 pm, Blue light 9 pm to 6 am. But I wonder how strong were those lights compared to the Fluval %s. I am extending the blue light setting to run throughout the night as my plants are used to it. I don't know if I should do it at 20%/50%/100%. What do you think?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  Před 2 lety

      What I would do in your case because you're changing lights entirely is kind of use your eyes to gauge. So I would turn on the old light and look to see about how bright my daytime setting is. Then turn on the fluval and begin playing with the light settings until you get something that visually to your eye looks like similar level of brightness of light. You can then do this the same for each night setting if that's what you plan to do. I know this isn't a perfect scenario or it's not like scientific but if we can tell by our eyes roughly how bright something is and compare the two lights it should be relatively close enough to give us a pretty satisfactory difference in overall light power but getting us to a slightly better or more controllable spectrum out of the fluval.

I’m at 90% currently and dealing with some fuzz algae on my plants and glass but I believe that’s due to lack of macronutrients. Plants seem to be growing but very slowly. Tropica ferts were low in macros so I’m switching to easy green to hopefully increase growth and beat out the algae!

    Hey can you set the time the light turns on and off to be different or is it a specific set time? I work nightshift and currently have to leave my light on before I leave for work to when I get home from work which is about 14hrs of light per day in the aquariums because of working 12 hour shifts and drive time being 2 hours total. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can program this light or possibly any light to turn on at a later time in the evenings and off at a specific time in the mornings? I want to enjoy being able to see my fish whenever I don't work so I would prefer to have my aquarium on a opposite timeframe to my current time zone.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  Před 2 lety

      This can be done using pro mode. Just find the time you want your lights to start. Put a 0 point there so that means all settings at zero. If you want your sunrise to be an hour long you would then put whatever you want your settings to get to at maximum an hour and later from that first point. Set how long you want your daylight to be on. Let's say you wanted 6 hours of daylight. Then you would set another point at maximum 6 hours after the first. Then if you wanted another hour sunset an hour after the point you just set that last point for daylight. You would set another point at zero and this can wrap around from midnight into the early morning. It's just all about how you set it up. This is a lot harder to do in auto mode so basically you just have to mimic auto mode by using pro mode.

I could not export (open) the newly named setup. I did not want to alter the Planted preset was why I did above sequence. Today I opened Planted preset, clicked edit and made a minor change to the 6:00 time to 5:00, then saved file, then I did a save as to the file with a unique name. At this point there is no preset name under device name. Then I clicked edit, selected newly created filename (preset), clicked export and it opened as expected with new preset name under device name. Long story shortened, I had to modify AND save preset before I could open AND modify with new name. The term export is rather confusing as it is used in many other types of software for file conversion. It's used here in what traditionally would be an 'open' command.

Found online to keep cold white lower - have minimal surface algae but need some for my plecos and Otos, scrape front glass once every two weeks and that's it - I only started looking into settings again because I recently raised the light from surface about 4 inches (I had minor dark spots /could see fish colors less visible at top edges of tank etc). I was looking to see if I should increase lighting % to compensate for raising the light but after seeing this second guessing raising it and considering raising only cold white to match 75% -
    P.s. I have a glass cover to minimize evaporation which probably effects the light a bit/ also I have cats

If the power goes out even for a second or two it actually shuts off the fluval light even when the power comes back on. You basically have to be home and able to turn the light back on if the power flickers out. With the APC power bank it runs seamlessly without interruption if the power flickers.
